View Full Version : Out of State hunting plans
Okay since it's here who is planing an out of state hunt this year? I have one on the schedule but am still on the fence so to speak. South Dakota for a deer/pheasnt hunt. Three of us are talking about going. Still have a little time to make up my mind.

I'll be in Northern Michigan again this year for the rifle opener...been going for many many years...family and friends camp. The hunting up north has been pretty spotty the last couple of years...thought about waiting until the second week this year maybe...but our patriarch of the cabin and hunting camp, my Uncle Oc passed suddenly a couple months ago...he was 68 years young. So I'm going to the cabin the first week as usual...if I don't, I'm afraid Al would be at the cabin by himself for his first ever deer camp without his Dad and I won't have that. It'll be a memorial hunt for all of us in his honor.
In the wind, Oscar's still alive...
South Dakota is a good place to go but I would be booking a hunt with a guide right now. The guides bookup fast out that way.
I am leaving next week for South Dakota. I am going out for the 19th year prairie dog and coyote huning. :coolgleamA:

Well, I'll be Hunting Alberta, Canada this year for the 1st time. Mule Deer Hunt, during the Rut. I Hope the weather and Rut is in our favor that week!:D
Going with my Friend. He has hunted there twice and talked me out of a Western State Hunt this year, to go there.
I will also be Hunting PA. with friends as usual.
45..We use to go up to Cadillac Michigan and hunt years ago. A friend had a place up there. Nice area.
J....Have read quite a bit on South Dakota Pheasants and it's pretty good. Their Deer hunting isn't too bad either. One day...I'll give it a whirl.

What outfitter are you going with? Is a gun or bow hunt? I'm hoping to make a trip to Alberta to do the same thing. I'll probably go during gun season though.
I'm going with a friend who's Brother works out there and said we can use his camp. Has all the amenities of home lol. He has a pointing lab also that is supposed to be awesome.

TF...Len Sharpe is the guy were hunting with. He has 4 Tags, and that is all he gets each year. He's currently booked through 2011.
Were going to gun hunt on this one. Were leaving Nov. 16 and we'll be back home the 22nd. Just Booked our flights last week. We'll fly into Calgary the 16th.
My friend shot a 180 and a low 170 Mulie with him both times, and on the 1st day both years. I'm sure I'll work my arse off and may not see one:p;).
He's will also have a whitetail tag on this hunt. He will be trying to go 2-2 this year!

Absolutely Beautiful country. We hunted Pagosa Springs and it is just another world with the mountains and Diverese terrain there.....Right above the NM Border!
For this area, we didn't have to use preference points, we were able to draw our tags with no preference points.

My buddies and I will be returning to Kansas to hunt turkeys. If we tag out there we will be taking a 20 minute drive north to hunt turkeys in Nebraska. If it works out we will hunt Missouri on the same trip. We also hunt Alabama, Pennsylvania, and hopefully Kentucky this year. That all makes for a great spring! Right now we are working out plans for Missouri to hunt deer also. But, hands down, here in southeast Ohio we have it as good as it gets!

For those of you making a trip out west, you're going to love it.
Made my first trip to Wyoming in 2008 to hunt mulies. Spent an entire week on horseback hunting upwards of 10,000 ft elevation - the scenary alone is spectacular. Even with poor weather conditions (relatively hot), I probably saw 22-26 bucks, with the largest being in the 170 ballpark. They are truly magnificant animals - I was baffled at the terrain that they call home. While I never got a crack at the caliber of deer I was after, I was fortunate to take a 145 inch mulie on the last morning. I can honestly say I would've come home just as happy with or without filling my tag.
I was also there in the middle of the elk rut. A buggle in the dark is enough to make your hair stand on edge. My next trip is going to be hunting bulls with the hoyt in hand.

The scenery is spectacular. The experience and the people, I will always have memories of.

If anyone has questions about the draw systems in Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Montana, Utah or Wyoming feel free to ask. You might want to PM me. I have been playing this out of state draw for a lot of years now. I haven't hunted my native state of Ohio in close to 25 years but I have hunted these others quite a bit. I would like to bring my sons back to Ohio one of these years for a deer hunt. I love to see how well the deer population is doing and man you guys should be proud of those huge buckeye bucks.

I can vouch for Jeff. I've known him for quite a few years and He was a regular on another Forum and lives In Colorado. Good guy and would be a good help to anyone in the states he listed. All his hunts are on his own, so you will get good feedback!!!

DH,
With 3 points you can draw anywhere in KS. Non-residents can now hunt muleys with a rifle too. Let me know what year you want to go and will plan accordingly. :bouncy:

John,
I drew a KS buck tag last year for region 7 or 8. This year I purchased a point. So I might need one more to draw the hard areas. Let's keep in touch about it. You should be able to get that Wyo moose tag soon. How many Colorado points do you have? How about Wyo deer?
Deehntr56
07-06-2009, 12:14 PM
Jeff:
I agree on the KS points. You'll need at least 1 more....we'll talk after next year then.
I also have 3 Iowa PPoints.
Colorado 3 Deer and 2 Elk.
Wyoming Moose....2 more may get it, I Have 8. It wasn't bad when they were only $7.00 each, now at $75.00:rolleyes: it's getting pretty expensive.
No Deer or Lope PP. I can most likely draw the 1st time where I hunt there.
I've been thinking Utah(Deer and Elk) lately;)
Didn't your kids shoot some lopes recently?? I think I saw a pic of them somewhere???:biggrin:
Hiker
07-06-2009, 02:46 PM
A couple more deer points and you'll be able to draw a decent Colorado tag. I think I have 4 Iowa points, did you see the price increase on points and tags in Iowa this year? Whew! I have been building up Utah points for a while now, I think I have 4 or 5 for LE wapiti and general deer points. Yes I let WY keep their moose after they bumped them up to 75 the other year. Plus you get the pleasure of ponying up another 1800 for the tag. Alaska moose tag is only 450 or so. If you decide to do a do it yourself type of hunt here in CO let me know and I'll try to dial you in on an area.
Yes my older daughter has killed 3 good pronghorn bucks over the last 3 years. She drew a great Colorado muley tag this year. My 10 year old son drew a coues/muley deer tag for burro mtns NM. I would rather be "guide" my children's hunts than hunt myself anyway. We can't wait until season starts.

cornstalk7,
Yes that is a beautiful area and it has some bear too. By first rifle season the bear usually are pretty fat and ready for winter. They do come into gutpiles, so keep your eyes open if you guys kill some wapiti, as it might be a magnet for some hungry bruins. Also keep your eyes open in the oak patches, the leaves might be falling off but the acorn crop should still be there. Also keep in mind that most of our bears are not black phase but chocolate and they blend in well in the scrub oak. Thanks for the kudos, as my children are getting older and able to hunt things have been more exciting for the hiker clan. :) Hopefully we will have a couple more hunting stories after this year.
