Jack, could you not have sold the black walnut for a pretty penny? Wood is down around here but one can always get good bucks for black walnut.

Drove by CJD3's house and saw him cutting a pine tree stump, he said something about 56 wanted it to make a gun stock.

The city was clearing land for a new hospital in Springfield and the bought like 3 city blocks of houses to level.. I passed one day and saw a guy on a track-hoe knocking down old houses and bulldozing over trees and hauling it all of in giant roll off containers.. I stopped and got permission from the foreman to cut firewood on the other end of the block... Most of the trees were old trees that were in peoples yards.. I dropped one black walnut that was 48 inches in diameter and numerous ones smaller than that... I also cut 3 ash, a hard maple, and a mulberry and 1 hickory.... Why the heck the foreman didn't call a mill to come harvest them I have no clue..

So if a black walnut gun stock blank is 200 dollars, I'll burn $1000 worth per load in the stove 2.5 loads a day. Jeeeezzzzz :nono:

That is some fantastic stuff! If I ever have to replace my Citori stock I've got some ideas now. :)

As far as that walnut in the city, most lumber/timber companies don't want to touch wood from someone yard. Too many chances of nails and hooks being embedded in the wood over the years and the risk of damging their mill equipment. I had a cherry tree that was 34"+ in diameter and they had ZERO interest in it for those reasons. My neighbor and I ended up splitting up the entire tree for firewood.

He was on a quick deadline to get those ghetto houses tore down and the land up to grade. So the Hospital could be given the property free and clear by the city / taxpayers in a deal to build a new hospital.

I know what you mean. I stood on a 9 foot ladder to make my face and back cuts to try and avoid that junk. Some of those trees were 50+ years old and I could guarantee they had nails in them.. The last thing I need is a chainshot to the body. Once I got them on the ground i went for the easy wood, giant long Limbs.

Interesting feed back Jack and Lance. I have heard the stories in the past reagrding a tree / timber close to homes that the mill's won't touch due to nails. We have had one guy turn us down becasue it was a bear of a tree and it was close to the house. He said by the time he takes all the care to insure it does not hit the home he would break even at best.

Understand the deadline to get the crack houses down and so fourth, just a shame to see something like black walnut cut and tossed. Not your fault of course Jack, hey you took advantage of some wood.....can't blame ya there.

I bet that cherry smelled good Lance.

Not yet.:(

But one of our board members who is really into it has, and it came out very nice.

One of my future endeavors is to make a few of my own with this "wood". It's something I have wanted to do for quite a while.
