There's a good article in the May issue of Outdoor Life magazine about the "Bow Wars" - the vertical bow vs crossbow issue. It listed pros/cons and points of views from different perspectives, seemed pretty fair and objective. Very worthwhile reading, IMO.
Things I learned from the article:
1) Ohio's Wildlife management chief, Dave Risley, hunts with a crossbow. :)
2) Ohio is one of only 11 states that a crossbow is totally legal for use in archery season (without restrictions like age or handicap). I consider myself fortunate for that reason.
3) Game managers really have their hands full trying to balance all of the different objectives they need to attain and all the different people and interest groups they need to try to keep happy. I don't envy them their job at all.
The magazine's Bowhunting Editor describes himself as a "crossbow convert" and points out what he calls an essential issue - "the fact remains...A crossbow hunter must possess the same woodsmanship, stealth, and accurate shooting ability as a vertical bowhunter."
Good article
