I am in the market for a gun safe due to moving in with the new wife & kids. Grandma doesn't like the idea of my arms being in the house without being inaccessible. (i hinted at a safe as our wedding gift but they wanted to buy a very cheap one...) Does anyone have any helpful advice on where to turn for a good valued safe ?
I went to Dicks but am not sure about their quality. They carry Stack-On & Sentry safes.

I am looking for anywhere from 24-36 gun safe. Any feedback is appreciated.

My dad wanted to buy one a few years back, and he actually bought one through ebay. It is a Diamondback safe, I think it holds around 36 guns. We're pretty happy with it. The delivery truck drop-shipped it at the end of the driveway, it was up to us to take it the rest of the way. It took us ther better part of 4 hours to move it about 75 yards and get it set up/leveled. This may be the safe he bought:

You have a lot of pretty good choices out there.
Liberty, Browning, make some pretty nice safes.
Look at the fire rating as well. Important if the house goes up in flames:biggrin:
Some areas to Look for;
How many guns they hold for your preference.
Fire protection....good ones will Fire protect for 90 minutes at 1,200-1,400°F
Quality Lock Protection System
Carpeted/Padded/Upholstered interiors
Lighting
11 Guage or heavy steel(on your pricier units)
Depending on where your putting it, the delivery is important. They weigh a ton, and if your going to the basement, make sure you have clearance, and the stairs can handle it along with someone to get it there.
A friend bought one and it didn't fit in his basement. Too big for the stairway. He went with a company that would deliver to the spot he wanted, and when it didn't fit they took it back and he picked out another one.
Try Gander Mountain, Cabelas and even Craigs List...some good deals have been had there at times....Good luck....

Depends on what you want it for.
If you just want it to keep guns out of the kid's hands and to shut-up Grandma the Stack-ons will work.
But if you want to protect them from professional thieves and fire there are better ones out there. I have a Champion http://www.championsafe.com/ for my main safe and a Stack-on for overflow.
Fin, Feather and Fur has a good selection of safes.

One other thought....
When my kids were young, I had them locked up tight. They had firends over all the time. I was VERY concerned about access. But I went a step further.
I also educated them. I told them if they want to see a gun, just let me know. I'll show it to them and how to handle it. I always "fixed" their curiosity fix when they asked. They never bothered them when I wasn't around.....at least from what i can tell.
I have trigger locks on every gun I own. I still have them on every gun. Great tool when you have children around. If they get get to the gun, they can't use it.
Also all ammo is locked in a seperate place. You have to access the safe, then the trigger lock needs to be pryed off, and then you need to get to the locked storage area to get the ammo. Pretty well child proof!
If you have children around, you HAVE to have trigger locks!
I have some good information I can add but I am at work right now. I will try to do it when I get home.

Buy a digital safe. They are so much faster.
Here is some good information: These guys know their stuff.......
A lot of safes these days are cosmetic shells of the safes of a few years ago. I guess cutting costs hits every industry....

Waterboy;),
I have the Sentry 24 gun safe from Dicks. They run specials on them all of the time. It does the job. 56 had a good point about lighting. Mine doesn't have any and that just didn't work for me. I purchased some of those tap on, battery operated lights and they work ok.
Happy shopping,

I know fiddy-six....Isn't it GRAND ! to have such great help. If I only would have thought to seek help from the forum before I got married then I wouldn't have to worry about how much to spend on my safe. :bonk: Just joking, married life is great.
Thanks for all the help fellers...I think i'm going with a 45 gun safe so I can have plenty of room to put other things (more guns)

If you get a 45 gun safe NEVER EVER tell the old lady how many it holds. Just makes it too hard to explain when it gets full;)

Fire ratings. 3 hours is probably the best you will find. 1.5 is good if you have a fire department nearby. if its a half hour, its not much at all.
Also think about placement. Fire ratings are pretty useless if the unit is in the basement. In the event of a fire it is more important to be watertight if possible.

the gauge of the steel is also an important consideration for protection. The AmSec safes also use a sprayed concrete substance as fireproofing instead of the typical sheetrock which tends to crumble in intense heat. When I was shopping there were some youtube videos on safes opened after the homes they were in burned durning the califonia wildfires. The results where pretty interesting. Mine was $2300 and will hold 42 or 46 guns but I will tell you that you'll never fit that many scoped guns in there. You will have other stuff you'll want to put in there and in no time be out of space.

I bought one over the winter. Got a Winchester Safe at Sam's club. Supposed to hold 24 guns and was about $650. I think you would be lucky to get 15 long guns in there if they have carrying handles, scopes, bayonets, etc on them. Scopes take up room. Mine would probably hold 24 Marlin 60's or Ruger 1022's. Tractor Supply has a big one for a grand. Size and placement was an issue for me with that one. My problem is where to put another one. Oh yeah, and how to explain to the wife why I need another one. he he
