Hey guys I need to find a CCW class within an hours drive of Columbus that is cheap. It is for my brother and he doesn't have a ton of extra cash laying around. My class was $100 in Springfield but he really needs to find something less costly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Call this guy Roy E. Landstrom 740-638-3006. He's about 5 min west of Cambridge, not far off I70,I'm not sure how far from Columbus that is seems to me like it should be within an hour. His price is $45. I had about a 45min drive and thought it was worthwhile I'd rather drive a little than support the local guys that want to charge through the nose

Let me throw a couple things in here. Please note, I'm am NOT an impartial poster. However, I do have insight into the "market".
I'm with a group, that has been putting on NRA Firearms Training Classes since 1991. That's 18 years, we have trained thousands of people in Columbus. We have trained a large majority of NRA instructors around Central Ohio, from guns stores, shooting ranges, clubs, etc.
We charge $150. What do you get?
-12+ hours of quality instruction in a dedicated classroom facility. -Ammunition (probably $25 worth or more)
-1 Yr NRA Membership ($35).
-Range Time at a commercial INDOOR facility (don't worry about rain, mud, wind, cold, heat).
-Loaner ear and eye protection
-Ability to choose from about 25-35 different firearms (or shoot your own).
-Maximum 2 shooters per instructor at the range.
-NRA Basic Pistol manual, handouts (about 20 pages supplementary material), and AG's CCW book.
-All volunteer instructor team, we are there because we like to teach, not to get paid (not that getting paid is a bad thing).
-ORIGINAL NRA Basic Pistol Class completion certificate, with State of Ohio affidavit information printed on it.
-Chief instructor name/credentials on file with Sheriffs departments in 44 counties around Ohio.
-Stability. We have records for anyone who has taken a class in the last 18 years. We get monthly requests for replacement certificates. We have that information, along with a website, telephone number, and facility.
Is it inexpensive? No It it worth $150? We think so. Charging through the nose? That's up to you to decide.
One interesting note from our Instructor training classes. Since CCW we get a lot of "pissed" instructor candidates in the instructor classes. This happens on Sunday, after they have been trained to be NRA Basic Pistol instructors and realize that they have been "ripped off" by instructors giving bad classes. *Note: I am not referring to OPOTA classes only NRA classes.
Folks from the last class noted, even though they took an NRA class:
- Only fired 10 shots (Class calls for minimum of 50 shots)
- Photocopy of Completion Certificate (Violation of NRA rules and State)
- No Manual or AG's book provided (Violation of NRA and State rules)
- Missing lessons from NRA Basic Pistol class (Violation of NRA rules)
- Issued NRA certificate for OPOTA class (Violation of NRA rules)
- Improper instruction
A final note: The NRA has pulled credentials from instructors. State of Ohio has prosecuted instructors for improperly issuing training certificates. CCW holders have had their CCW pulled (held), because their instructor of record has been prosecuted.
Summary : Be careful with the important decision on training and choosing an instructor.

I can vouch for Pete, the class he referred me to was a good one. The instructors were knowledgeable and the range time was sufficient :)
Thanks again Pete !

There are many good programs out there.
Price is not always an indication of better quality or vice versa!
The one that I indicated for $80.00 is with North Olmsted Sportsman Club, and many of the instructors I have known for many years. All NRA Certified and very reliable. You won't be taking only 10 shots in this course, and you will walk away with books of literature and an understanding of CCW.
We lease their indoor range in the winter months.
They have been around probably as long as we have and we just celebrated our 53rd year, so stability and reliability is not challenged by too many out there!!
website.....http://www.nosc-online.org/index.php/Main_Page
They are non profit like us and pass on the savings to all who take the course!!
Click on their programs section and refer to the CCW Section for information. They also work with us and are affliated with our directors in promoting the Junior rifle program, which has grown tremendously over the years, thanks to all the instructors who have devoted their time to promote this sport with the young shooters.

Also got to shoot a whole bunch of different guns at different calibers at different distances, and did self defense shooting exercises, well worth the money if u ask me
