Well, for me, about 6:30 AM, I rolled over and slid open the window, sure enough, the 3 that have been gobblin behind the house are still there!!

Headed downstairs, grabbed a cup of coffee, walked out to the front of the house and they were gobblin across the road to. Lookin good so far!!

Any ideas for a name yet?

Beak Busters? LOL

Good lookin pattern ohiosam!

The boy's had a fun day today, my oldest shot a jake he called in himself and the youngest, well,,, I put 7 jakes in front of him and he froze up, they were ten yards from us checkin out the decoy and he wouldn't shoot :(

The toms gobbled good on the roost but when they hit the ground, they only threw a handful of courtousey gobbles every now and then. :16suspect1:

Hoping monday the weather is descent...

So is everyone going out tomorrow? I'll be out, I've been having trouble nailing down where the birds are spending their days on nice days this year. They are roosting in an old strip mine area with thick underbrush that makes it difficult to approach the roosts. Fortunately I know where they usually are on rainy day.

Hopefully Team 7 will put some points on the board tomorrow.:bouncy:

I'm teetering right now whether to go or not tommorow due to the weather. End of the week should be great, but im jonesin to hit the woods for the opener. I think I'll be there. Probably set up in a a field with some decoys on a roosted bird and hope I can get him to pop his head out and smokem. Good luck everyone and be safe. I'll hit the board up tommorow and let you know how things went.

Went out this AM with a friend. Waited in the truck a little while for the rain to let up but the wind was blowing pretty good. Set-up along a bean field on the lee side of the woods.

About 8 we moved to another field, my friend at one end and I at the other. Soon after I set-up a jake came in but I passed. About 10 it was raining hard so I headed for the truck. About the time I got to the truck my friend shot a jake. He was pretty happy because it was only his second bird and the first he called himself.

I only heard on gobble all morning.

Way to go Sam. You were on the birds no less. Just as easily could have been a big old tom..

I'll be leaving for VintonCounty on Friday for 9 days of giving them hell. So if you are wondering where old jack went next week and why I'm not posting That’s where I'll be..

For a team name..

It seams like we have a great team here with a good shot at taking the gold.. I say we go with a controversial name just to stir the pot.

I like Hi-Power..sounds confident!

I hunted today and seen 1 hen and 1 gobbler(to far to shoot). With toting a camera I'm limited on weather conditions and how I am able to hunt. I usually run-n-gun but when it rains I'm stuck in a blind cold calling.

Did see 4 strutting in a field on a property I can hunt on my way to the house! I'll be bugging them soon!

What an absolutely frustrating day turkey hunting!:irked:

Get out at 5:30, some stars and the moon shinning, look to be a good morning.

About 6:10 I get a gobble so I get in the woods just far enough to see down in the hollow and get set-up. There about 15 minutes and I hear another hunter hooting. He spooked the bird off it's roost. Then he seems to set-up 50 yards away from me. (later I found out this was a friend and he has permission)

So I get up and move down the hollow a couple hundred yards to a power line and set-up again. Right at 7 an old guy on a 4-wheeler comes up a logging road and up the power line, almost ran over my decoy:mad::mad: He gets to the top of the hill only 40-50 yards from me and gets off and starts glassing the field. So I go up and talk to him, when I get close I recognize him as a neighbor's son-in-law who talked his mother-in-law not letting us deer hunt last year(we'd hunted that property for 30 years) So I asked if he had permission (only I and the friend above have been given permission this spring). He claimed to be related to the old lady that owns the farm(he isn't) and she lets everyone hunt(she doesn't). He also rode through a church campground to get there. No use getting into a big fight, hopefully we'll get back on his in-laws sometime and pizzing him off won't help.

I decide to head to the other end of the farm, about a 3/4 mile walk over hilly ground(I'm getting to old and fat for this:whistle:) and once again go in the woods a little and sit down (it's now 8:45) and after awhile let out a few calls. Right away a gobbler answers from across the hollow, so I call again and he fires right back.:) So I move up the hollow and cross it to his side and get back down about 100 yards above where he gobbled from. I get set-up and I think I hear another hunter calling. I call, no gobble, wait 15 minutes and try again. Nothing, then I hear the guy above me calling again. So after moving up a couple more times I give up on that one too. :irked:

Running out of places to hunt on this farm, so I decide to head to another farm(about 15 miles away). Get there and it's almost 11:00 so I have to hurry. Decide not to take the decoys. I get to the spot I was planning on and realize in my rushing that I've forgotten my face mask. I start calling and in the distance I hear a gobble. Call again and there's several gobbles. They're responding to every call and getting closer:bouncy: Finally I can see them, 3 gobblers, and they are now getting cautious(wish I had my decoys and mask). One, a long beard, hops up on a log and stretches his neck out to look and I think this is as good a chance as I'm going to get. Just as I pull the trigger he steps off the log and I FREAKIN MISS!!!:banghead3:

Maybe tomorrow will be better:D

Sounds frustrating ohiosam..At least your birds are working..I only heard a couple gobbles on the roost and they hit the ground and disintegrated..

Better luck next time with the shot...Just shoot the next one twice to make up for the miss :mischeif:

Well tommorow is kicking off my season. Ive been waiting all week dealing with all sorts of crap to get a couple end of the week hunts in. I'm hoping the forecast stays true with little wind and warmer temperatures. Now all I need to do is decide on the spot. Its either a 5 minute drive a couple miles down the road to a nice little chunk of land, or a 40 minute drive to a monster trek of land. I'm going to go try to roost a couple down the road tonight, but its going to have to be convincing to keep from making the trek to the bigger chunk. Hope everyone else is getting out and having fun. I'll be checking back soon.

Team High Power seems to work well

No turkey for me today...not even a gobble :irked: I did however film an excellent coyote kill. I don't typically kill coyotes in the spring while turkey hunting, but when I seen it carrying a hen turkey in it's mouth through the woods and watched it bury the turkey it was time to take out this turkey killer. A few lip squeeks and he was 20 yards in front of me and WOW did a load of number 5"s put him on his rump  I'm working on editing the hunt down and I'll try and get it posted sometime tomorrow, it's a good one!

Goin to a new place tomorrow for turkey's....hope they are workin there...good luck guy's

Was out this morning, had 2 gobbling to beat the band a few minutes after 6:00. Got as close as I dared (I'd guess they are 75-100 yards away) and sat down. After about 15 minutes a hen started puttin from a limb almost over my head, I thought she busted me. She jumped to another tree and seemed focused up the hill still puttin. Finally she flys down away from me towards the gobblers.

I see movement coming down the hill, can't see much but I think its a coyote. Then I catch another glimpse and I think it's a deer. Turned out a coyote was chasing a year old buck. Coyote ends up crossing the hollow but the buck came right up to me, about 20 feet away. He was pretty worked-up, stompen and snorten and finally he went back over the ridge.

Back to the turkeys, I try calling and a gobbler responds, he's getting closer. He get about 50 yards away and I can see tips of his tail feathers and his head. He's strutting behind a log:(. Pretty soon I hear a hen behind him and he's gone.:irked: Tried moving up a couple of times but no luck.

All that happened by 6:45.

Sorry guys I just can't seem to seal the deal. But it's sure been exciting so far!:D With the nice weather comin' turkey huntin' will have to take a back seat to farming soon. Hope you guys have better luck!

Went out to the property again tonight for a turkey feast from a friends bird and tried to locate some till dark. Not a single gobble. Not sure what to think. Im gonna wait for the weather to get a little nice to go out to that property again but I might hit another place before that.

I took another friend this morning. Last year when we hunted together I got a long beard so I told Brian if one bird came in he had first chance.

Got one gobbling at about 5:30, got in close and set-up the decoys. While were were doing that I heard 2 or 3 other birds gobbling behind us. We sat down about 20 yards apart and I noticed Brian looking back over his right shoulder towards the other gobbles. I wasn't sure what he was looking at but soon I caught a glimpse of something moving behind me. Found out later there were 3 coon right by Brian. So I yelp softly a little and pretty soon I see him strutting on Brian's right. After a little he started to act nervous and moving away so Brian took a shot and the bird started flopping around and got up and started running so I shot and Brian also shot again. He tried to fly but and went about 50 yards and landed, and ran into a multi-floral rose patch. Check the time and it was only 6:20.

So we go and look and can't find it, Brian told me about the coon and said that was what spooked the bird. I notice a couple of hunters coming up to where we were sitting. We go back and talk to them, the one was the landowner's son. They were set up on the other side of the roost. They decide to go after the others we heard gobbling. We go back to looking and soon found it hiding in a brier patch.

It was Brian's first long beard, 21 1/2 lbs, 11 inch beard. right spur 1 1/8 the left 15/16. :bouncy:

After about a half hour I heard those other guys shoot and later watched them through the binoculars carrying a bird to their truck.:D

Vinton County Sucked Sucked Sucked last week...

2 Saturdays ago.. 1 Bird hammering on the roost. Wouldn't answer any calls yelp, cuts, clucks nothing.. Flys off the roost to a finger ridge and goes quiet.. I sneak up 30 min later and there he is standing on a hen banging away at 100 yards.. I got set up and figured that when he was finished the hen would run off and he would be left alone.. NOpe she bolted and he followed..

2 Sundays Ago.. I got set up on the ridge he was strutting on to ambush him in his strut zone.. Daylight breaks and he starts hammering.. In the darkness I had got on the wrong finger ridge. 1 rise too early down the hollow.. Oh well..

Monday Standing on a high ridge where I could see the other ridge half mile away. Not a single Gobble all morning

Tuesday Same Not a single gobble all morning on the total 2,000 acres we have permission for

Wednesday Same Not a single gobble all morning on the total 2,000 acres we have permission for

Thursday Same Not a single gobble all morning on the total 2,000 acres we have permission for

Friday No roost gobbles A few birds lit up gobbling around 9:30. Wouldn't answer yelps, But would double gobble to hard cutting .. They never worked in only away...

Saturday. No roost Gobbling 1 Bird hammering around 9:15 Got set up he worked in to about 60 yards and shut up. So did I. His next gobble was over 200 yards down the ridge. I cut over the edge went around him and got out in front of him.. He came to within 100 yards, i was quiet No calling and he had been gobbling for 30 min after I got set up then he ghosted

Sunday. We went to hunt a property 2 miles away and herd 1 bird that shut up when it hit the ground. But back over on our property the boys said the birds were just hammering all over around 8:45 almost 9:00..
A youth killed one in an area that i had been in hearing distance of for 6 days and never herd a gobble. But he said 4 birds were hammering down in the hollow that Morning..

9 days hunting on 2,000 acres and no bird. And Mike Rex You can Kiss my butt if you say Ohio Is even in the Top 20 Turk States.

We are going to slaughter those hens come fall.. If you buy a tag for turkey next fall, I will pick you guys up by the truckloads to go with me to shoot those mangy hens.. Almost everyday I got set up Within 20 min I would hear a hen.. I would try to call and there would be a hen.. Driving down the road there is a hen. The 1 bird I herd on Saturday at like 9:15.. I was standing on a gravel road when he started up... He was over 700 yards away and I counted no less than 7 hens cross the road hauling but to him... He only gobbled like 3 times..

I have never contemplated breaking the law in my life. But by day 8 i was ready to sit on a ridge with a gobble shaker and shoot every damn hen that came up the hill....

Ohh well least the beer was cold and the fishing at Rupert and Alma was good.. We were killing the rainbow trout al Alma all week and catching 12 inch crappie in Rupert.

I'm going down to hunt friday through sunday this week. with any luck they should be fired up and the hens sitting early

Sounds like turkey hunting around here last year, Jack. I could hardly buy a gobble and it was hard to get the toms away from the hens. I did finally get a bird that came in silent,he never gobbled until he was right by me(scared the livin' crap out of me!) and then only because a gas well tender truck went by.

This spring is completely different. I haven't seen or heard many hens, they must be settin. Gobblers have responded to my calls every time I've been out this year. Not sure what's happening in southern Ohio:confused:

Got some time to post.

Well it's been a great season for me! I'm still fairly green at this turkey huntin' only killed my first bird about 5 years ago. The jake I shot Friday wasn't what I hoped for (1st jake I've ever shot) but it was looking like that was going to be my last time out, the farm and family obligations are going to interfere with turkey hunting.

I know you guys in southern Ohio haven't had the action you are used to but it was different up here, last year was a different story, they were all henned up. This year the birds were vocal and not too henned up. Even a noob like me could call them in. I helped 2 friends with less experiance then I get birds including a nice mature long beard. Every time out something exciting happened!

Thursday at fly down had a hen land right in front of me, she came with in 5 ft but never spooked. Later I moved up to the field and I called 2 jakes and a gobbler away from a hen (without a decoy), didn't take the shot because they were too close together for a clear shot, then they moved out of range. Friday a friend went with me, we got between the birds on roost and the field but they went around us. So we dropped down in the hollow and circled way out around, probably walked almost a mile to get to a spot a 1/4 mile away. We walked up the hill to about where we thought the birds would be and one was in the field 40 yards from me. Bill called a little and he gobbled and moved into range. I'll admit that I couldn't see very well through the brush and wasn't really sure if it was a jake or a long beard but decided by this time it didnt matter much.

'Bout the only time I might get out again is the last day. Good luck to the rest of you.

Well I went and bought another tag just to hunt tomorrow. The way I figure $24 for 6 hours of hunting works out to $4 per hour, Though figuring by the hour it gets expensive if I shoot a turkey at 6:15....

All in all cheap entertainment. :D
