My name is Aaron also, I'm 40 and hunt mostly in Washington, Athens and Meigs counties. I've worked at a chemical plant near Marietta for the last 20 years. As far as a team name, I'm up for anything you guys choose. Most of my hunting involves my mom who eats this stuff up as much as I do. I look forward to this season, and I hope we all kill a big one.

I got wet as a rat. I had one gobble 100 yds away 3 times right off the roost then he left and a hen walked by at 7 yds and then the rain let up and I had a gobbler 80 yds down in the valley. He was gobbling but not at me. he gobbled a lot and then shut up. Then 20 minutes later I heard him going crazy but once again he didn't care about me. I suspect they both had hens with them. I also heard a couple a good ways away but they don't count. On the way back I crossed a power line and saw ten in it. But I couldnt make out what they were. I drove to a new place and called and had a gobbler answer me 50 yards from my truck i went around him and called and he answered 6 times. He did a 360 around me and then shut up so i went to the truck after a while when i got almost to my truck he was standing by my truck with 5-7 buddies. Thats my morning. I am sure the turkeys I am hunting are henned up. And im not sure what I am going to do. I guess I will just keep hunting them and maybe eventually they will leave a hen and come to me but by then they might recognize my calls lol. I will get after then wed and thur. then I am going to some other public land that i like to hunt about 25 minutes away. great opening morning all in alll. and I can't complain I did get that adrenaline rish from the the truck gobbler and the one in the valley. I thought they were coming in. oh well.

i had the same thing happen.....gobbling like crazy down in a hollow with hens clucking and they headed south........so tomorrow im gonna try and get closer without spooking them on the roost......get within a 100 yards south of where he roosted to maybe just even get a look at him in that hollow.....hopefully if im close enough to the roost he will jsut fly down and head my way......Did have one hen fly down in the field and head south into the woods. and a hen came out where that gobbler was roosted and she moved south also so im gonna try and amush em with some deoys and calls in the morning i will keep all of ya updated....

I don't know where they are..but I can bet they aren't hunting lol I don't know who they are though. I went out today heard 5 different gobblers. 3 were together and goen nuts and then all of a sudden they shut up then i heard a crow call. lmao a man walked right through them and he was walking right to me so i jumped up and waved my orage flags at him. he didnt care he just turned a little bit so he wouldnt have to get yelled at by me. He scared all 3 gobblers away. the other gobblers kept gobbling but were too far away and i think had hens. I walked back mad as a steam boat and had my gun unladed and ten jakes stood 50-60 yards in front of me i fumbled around to load my gun and couldn't find my shells. then they took off. It was a great morning. I love tukrey hunting even when ppl mess things up the woods is soooo soo awesome and peaceful and stress relieving. Is anyone on this team ALIVE? Whats goen down boys?

Thursday was one of my best and most memorable days in the woods. My mom, who is 64, has been at this as long as I have and Thursday morning was awesome from the time we shut the car door. They were gobbling their heads off the whole time in the trees. By 7:00 we had two birds down and after all the grunt work she treated me to breakfast at Bob Evans. You just don't get to many days like this.:)

Went out this morning and was set up at 6:00 with 2 hen decoys and my newly aqucired fully strut decoy. With the owl call didn't hear any gobblin so i was kinda disappointed:rolleyes:......Well i started doing tree yelps around 6:20. At exactly 6:30 all the sudden turkeys everywhere flying down within 50 yards of my decoys.....8 hens and 5 jakes.....well i decided to pick the biggest jake and at 6:38 BAM 3 1/2 inch shell at 40 yards put the end to him....I will have pics up ASAP......18 pounds 4 1/2 inch beard and 1/2 inch spurrs....I recommend going out and buying a full strut decoy they work great....

I am working off nites again in the am. and just looked at the forcast and decided I better get out there since it will be raining for a few days. My plan is to use my bow for my second bird, (something I've never done before), after reading Kaiser's post. By the way what is your favorite decoy to use that is easy to get in and out of your vest? Good luck guy's.

I have always used a foam decoy. there are junky ones and purdy descent ones taht go in your vest nice. I have a couple stuffers but never use them because they are so big. I might get a dave smith decoy someday though.

I got the carry lite foam hen (2) decoys and a B-Mobile full strut decoy (with my newly aquired jake tail fan as the fan)......Last friday i will just say all 13 of em flew down right around my decoys.......Plus i like the foam ones they move great with even a light breeze...Then on sunday i took dad out and called for him had 5 jakes 80 yards away but seen the full strut decoy and just turned around and walked away. Going out in the morning just gonna try 3 hen decoys....seems like all the males on this small property are juvenile birds so i don't think the strut decoy is gonna work too well.....and friday when i shot my bird the jakes were acting pretty scared of it then...so tomorrows game plan is same place just 3 hen decoys

04-28-2009, 11:25 PM
If you have that many jakes then I would say by the end of the third week the big one is going to start going thru seperation anxiety and that B-mobile is going to be like gold. I was out this am. and was welcomed with nothing but silence, so since I have to take my kids to school Wed. I think I"ll go to Athens County Thursday am. with my blind and bow, hope it's good. :)

I got bout 80 to 100 yards from 3 gobbling on the roos this monring but i was afraid to get any closer. I didnt wanna spook em. needles to say they went the other way. I am going to try to get right in on them tomorow and sit in their laps. we will see how that goes. they have no interest in my calls at all. i have been hunting these same birds since day one. I have never hunted the same birds this long. its getting discouraging. good luck guys

Sport, i would try to roost those birds if u can then try to move in close before daylight. If u cant to that, then try to identify a pattern they use upon flydown and be waiting on them. They have been difficult the past few mornings. I think this wacky weather has them off their game. Good luck, RT

Its important to wait till the last hour of daylight to listen. You can hear them fly up and they sometimes yelp, cackle or gobble. Just be careful and try not to spook them.

I think saturday night im gonna try it.....get all my camo on and just walk to the edge of the woods and sit down and listen......on wednesday didn't hear or see a thing......found a buch of tracks on the south end about 300 yards away from where we been sitting.....any idea how far turkeys travel on a daily basis and do they roost in the same tree or same area atleast?
Dissident
05-08-2009, 11:43 PM
Daily a tom will follow the hens for a long ways but tend to return to roost in the same area nightly. Remember if there are gobblers in your area, and u havent spooked them that day, your still in the game. Be patient and remember gobblers are very curious birds. Keep your calling soft and simple. Good luck. RT
