Coonie,
I have seen some of your work / strings which are awesome looking.
So you only have around $1.00 in materials? Wow!
I guess I can relate that to tying flies for fishing. What it cost me to make a fly - vs - what it cost to buy one at a tackle shop is unbelievable.
Sincerely,
Riverdude.

Coonie, think one day I could get you to make me up a string for my recurve? It's in need of a new string, just haven't got around to having one done up. Let me know, I'd be willing to pay big $$$
Like 2 dollars. :D

hmmm i guess you mean me...no i'm just wondering how much it would cost those that shoot cps...or xbows for that matter...i already know how much it would cost a trad...
well i look at wendys bow and see all that string is one...and it just pops up in my head..."wow i wonder how much that would cost to repair if a broadhead accidently taps it"...:yikes:nothing about impressing...:D

I had my compound restrung a couple years ago and it cost me a total of $26.00. Would have been over $50 at FF&F.
Never had the cables done so not sure what that runs.

that ain't bad i thought it cost lots more than that...wendys string appears to be one continuous string and cables too all in one unit...it just looks like it would be super expensive...:D

It really just depends on the brand of string. I'm sure some of them get pretty pricey to replace. Mine is just a basic plain jane string :)

I just dropped my x force yesterday to have a custom string built. A buddy of mine that owns a bow shop build custom strings for any compound bow. He build them out of some sort of low streatch material. The string material is high though. I have had a problem with the bust cables and the string stretching on my x force. Bust cables and the string is going to run around $250. The zebra strings that come already on alot of bows sell for around $50 to $75, I think.

I just had my local bow shop order me a new bow string for my Mathews Switchback XT. I had him order the Winners Choice string which runs about 85 bucks a set and you get any color combo you could think of and colored serving.
So you might need more than a couple bucks when you go get your strings Coonie ;)

Anytime I buy a new bow, I buy a new string with it. I have a bow press, and I can change strings myself. I learned a long time ago how to put a new serving on my string as well. I also learned how to paper tune my bow, wich is a big plus!
Basics like this can make your hunt alot cheaper over the years. I'm sure this has all been covered here, but I'm still a newbie here! So I apologise if I repost info that's been covered.

Cost me about $15 to restring my bow, but it also depends on the string I buy.
My SQ2 ran me close to $100 to put new Winners Choice strings and cables on it. I believe that was back in 2004 or so.

I see some pic on here where bow string are twisted way too many turns - if yur twistin more then 1.5 turns per inch its too much on a trad bow :rant::rant::rant::rant:

i have heard that said but i have never seen any harm in it...i have some strings i have made too long so they needed twisted more if i use them on the bow intended for...of course with me i can just put it on a longer bow but i usually dont xcept if i make it too short...thats where problems arise...now if the string is binding up because its twisted too tight then common sense says thats too much but thats a lot of twisting...personally i like a string with a little more turns than one with just 10 twists in it...that string will go to a shorter bow for sure...
i've never seen it cause arrow flight problems as some have said it would...or have i ever seen a string break from it...of course redicuously excessive twisting could cause a break i guess...either way i try to keep mine at a medium...not too close of twists or with hardly no twists...
i find the more i make the more consistant at getting them almost perfect i am...thats what i like...its when you just make them far and in between they wont be as consistant in length,so theyre too short or too long...even with my collection of recurves...a day comes i don't need anymore strings...so i make them for others...besides its fun...

Well if its too long just redue one of the loops - if its twisted too much it stackes on itself like steps and can actually weaken the fibers kinda like the worng kinda knot on a feeshin line cuttin itself - and then it makes for more creep in the string every shot cuz it tries to unwind it self - heh heh - but do uhm like ya like - i never had a bow string fail - 10 -20 twists good -
on a continuous string ya need some twists ta keep the fibers in each strand from balooning at the end of the power stroke - thans muh 2 cents - heh heh

20 and up to binding for me...10 i dont like the look...just personal preferencce i have...but i dont like a tight twist as well as a medium...i twist until i get my brace height...i shoot the string in before putting on the serving for reasons i don't really know...but i get the stretch out of the string which is mainly in the loop sections...once the braided sections in the loop get skinny and the string wax is oozing out i know its time to quit shooting and put my serving on...i do know i've never had the unwinding problem...but as said i don't twist them once they start binding up...i do in the loops, because i like getting a tight and consistant twist there...on the loops i go to they just start to bind...i learned this from a very old manuel on making braided strings...and it works very good i think...

Well there goes another DOLLAR :D
SO.. What would you reccomend for a good starter recurve. It has been along time since I have shot one and was thinking about getting another one. The first 3 years I shot my compound I didn't use any sights. I still don't use them for more then a good starting point when I shoot from my tree stand.

new recurves or longbows can be had at lancaster archery supply very reasonably...or used vintage bows such as bear, pearson, browning, shakespeare, wing and others can be had from 40-200$...there are some new custom bows for around 400$...like checkmate...or used customs that can be had reasonably from 150-400$...give it a try...:D

traditional strings were made of hemp - gut - sinew - and stuff like that - there all synthetic modern materials now like B-50 - D-97 and stuff like that :irked:  :mischeif:
