Are you kidding me. Everytime I am driving down the road and see one off in the field I say " I wish I had my gun with me " Don't believe me just ask my wife ;). She will tell you.

I realize farmers probably don't care... but, do you wait until a certain time of year to hunt g-hogs? I've heard there is a time the mother comes out of the hole before the young have been weened. Just curious.

Yeah the farmers want em killed before they reproduce. On the other hand if you don't have a lot of ground to hunt you can wait till May or June and you'll have more to hunt, but by then they get harder to see in the taller grass and hay. I have several thousand acres to hunt this year and lots of holes so I've been whacking em as fast as I can cause most will be in bean fields and once the beans get too tall it's almost impossible to see them. The ones in the hayfields I'm letting go for now cause I can always hunt them later in the summer after each cutting of hay

I only shoot adults. I dont kill the lil guys cuz they havent dug any holes yet haha.
Heres a couple lil boogers that took residence behind our steer feeder. I assume i killed mommy. My cousin turned them loose out by the tracks.

To keep piece w/ my farmers I nail 'em as soon as I can.
Though I hate shooting a mother w/ little ones! :nono: However, the hay is to high during this time so the chucklets are big enough to go on their own by the time the hay is off.:D I consider 'em fair game then.:mischeif:
Back several decades when I was little, my one sister would catch chucklets & make pets of them. They actually make good pets. Don't try & have one now-n-days.:tsk: The DNR will spank you long & hard! :yikes:

when i was younger i used to wack every one i could see , when i moved to southern ohio there arent as many , or they just have better hiding spots down here, now i let the smaller ones go for another day and whack the big uns , unless im on a farm that wants em gone then i whack em all, one farm i hunted down here had about 7 holes in about 50 yard area , it was just after the little ones were weaned , i would take a shot at one and a few of the little ones would pop there heads out of different holes, it reminded me of the whack a mole game, for about 30 minutes i would shoot at one then the small ones would pop there heads up to see what the noise was

I'd like to take my .17HMR next time I go to the mountains in WV to fish. In one small pasture field by the road, I saw 6 groundhogs! It was like giant prarie dogs. :yikes:
I hardly ever see them here in Athens Co., except for on campus.

I hunt hogs the fun and guaranteed way. His name is Sampson, my Jack Russell Terrier. We were just under 60 last year. Also the digging keeps me in shape. Anyone interested to come along is welcome. I wont mention the 4 skunks, which 2 of them nailed him. How you all feel about that type of hog hunting?

Sounds like fun. Only it's to much work for me to do just for a hog :).
I just sit and wait very patiently and then they stick their little heads out and WHACK.... Dead hog. They make some good target practice from tree stands during the summer as well :bouncy:

Most of the time they are only 12" deep. The Deben locating collar tells me where the dog and hog are so there is usually very little digging.

Hey Bob, that's how I first got into Jack Russels. Since moving east I haven't the spots to hunt like I once did. We used to get alot of them with the terriors. Nowadays we hunt squirrels with them. Here's a few pics from 16 years ago. No digital camera back then.
Here's one peeking out to see if there's any dogs around.

Pretty much just stick them in a hole :). they know what to do.
A buddy of mine has 2 russells and anything thats in the yard is fair game. They have taken out coons, rabbits, squirrels, groundhogs and even the occasional fish from the pond if it gets to close to shore. Alot of fun to watch them get all fired up.

Most will readily enter dens, but some never will. Most do have that instinct preloaded on thier harddrive.
We used to train some of the pups with feeder mice and pieces of black corrugated pipe. It gets them used to the darkness of the dens, and the whole aspect of what they sare doing. They are great diggers, and love to dig for chipmunks. So if you have young dogs, it doesn't hurt to let them dig a few up on a walk through the woods.
They are smart dogs, and as redcloud stated, they don't need much training.

One thing I will tell ya, is this isn't a sport for the wifes lapdog. The dogs do get bit up from time to time. Unless you have a very understanding wife, you might want to consider two dogs.
We usually hunted two to four dogs at a time, so you have to be carefull on disspatching. If you can expose the groundhogs vitals, we would stick them with a broadhead tipped arrow we carried. Firing a gun that close range to your dogs head can be rattle them if they aren't accustomed to it. Sometimes we would simply get a boot over the groundhogs neck long enough to get the dog out of the way, and then put a .22 behind the ear.

Thats true :D. Those hogs have some pretty good chompers and they aren't afraid to use them. My grandpa had a German Shepperd mix found a hog one day and the hog split the dogs tongue right down the middle.

Another thing with this type of hunting, is watch out for them ground bees. JRT's are very personal dogs that bond with you, and they don't understand when you are smacking bees off them when they are trying to hunt for you. Trust me they don't notice bees, and you should, and get your dogs away from a groundnest.

Hmmm....How often did you run into ground bees??......and also got my first hog of the year....a farmer called wanting it shot so I went out and 222 yds dead.....going out to take a pic of it and I will post it than.

anyone use a .17 mach 2 for groundhogs? i was just wondering if they'd put a hog down quick with a non-head shot or if it would be like a 22 lr.

Went out yesterday and got 5 in about 2 hours. Ranged from 125-210 yards. The rangefinder makes me much more effective, glass and find, range, look up range on my ballistics chart, aim appropriately and gently squeeze the trigger. Not nearly as much educating going on this year as in years past due to this.
I was surprised by the one I did get though. Had shot one as he meandered towards this hole, misjudged my hold and tossed him into the air. He hit the ground and froze, fatal mistake. Not 10 minutes later there was one sticking his nose out of the hole I had just shot at and then the groundhog climbed out and started sniffing the dead one. Another fatal mistake made.
Huntorstarve,
The 17 machII is a 22LR necked down to .17 with a correspondingly higher velocity. So my thought would be better results then a .22 at the same range but not 17hmr or 22mag results. I know a .22lr can effectively put down a groundhog out to around 50 yards with good shot placement. If I can get within 50 yards of a group of holes I love using a .22, cheaper and makes me think about shot placement a lot more then my .243. Hope that helps, if not go to rimfirecentral.com and ask around they are very knowlegeable about the rimfire rounds.

I have shot alot of hogs and imo with a .22 or a .17 if it's not a head shot they will make it back to the hole. I have shot hogs in the chest and followed it up with a shot in the gut (Thump) while it was running and it still got back to his hole 20yds. away from where he was. I don't mind though because it dies anyway and plus it's out of the farmers way :D

Not much in favor of rimfires unless I'm assured of a head shot.
Not saying I don't use 'em for I surely do. :shhh:
My Buddy once figured he could reload 17Rem cheaper than he could shoot his 17HMR.:D

I was out this evening and seen some young ones out, just big enough to come out of the hole. Also seen five baby skunks out right at the edge of their den they were only about 5-6" long, kinda cute.
