I was out looking around trying to find some deer trail today. I found a trail and started to follow it. Walked that trail for almost 200 yards and just as I went to make the turn I looked over an WOW found this just off to the side.

WOW, great find! Congrat's.
Check back on some of the other threads, I believe a dead head has to be reported to be legal.

yup call the game warden and tell him you found it and show him the pics
if the antlers are still attached to the skull it has to have a tag or you can get in trouble for untagged deer parts

WOW If that GW actually shows up 2 days after you called him, or even answered his phone for that matter we need to clone that guy and hire him in every county.
I’ve got a 2 heads in my garage. 1 I called 4 times about 3 years ago, The other i called 3 times about last year.. To date No tag not even a return call.

I think he got bored today or something. Usually you call and he will call back a few days later. Today he called back within a couple hours and he said he was going to be in the area anyway so he would stop by the woods.
If it's unlawful for you to take them without a tag why are they in your garage ;)

Nice find Redcloud.
Got a receipt last week from the GW for 2 dead heads I found this year.
Now what? Guess I'll call him back to see if I still need tags.
This is the better of the two.

So GO ahead coonie..
Good I hope they do.. I have field photos of the deer on the ground. I have Emails that were sent to the Division HQ and replies where they said they would pass it on to the GW. I have the print out from my cellular bill showing every time that I called the officers cell and his office number.. AND i told him my damn self in the last Voicemail that i was going to get the head without him and if he wanted to give me a tag he knows where my address is... If he listens to his VM he know damn well my address and he knows damn well i have a dead head in my garage. I turned myself in right to his Voicemail and he still hasn’t shown up in 3 years.. If someone can call to "turn me in" great.. Tell them to bring a couple tags.. I hope the ODNR does read this... When you show up BRING ME A COUPLE FREAKING TAGS....
Oh and BTW nobody here knows my address.. The only way a GW could track me from here is to get my IP from Steve. Then my internet provider will have to track that IP to my billing address. ISPs have been locked in an effort of privacy with law enforcement and just about all of them REQUIRE a subpoena for that information.. After the subpoena they'll need to come over and bust me for possessing 2 "untagged deer parts" In court I will show I attempted extreme due diligence to get it "legally".. And the officer failed to assist. We'll all end up in court. And if I win the ODNR will then have a counter suit in civil court...... I also have about 5 racks in my Garage from Mississippi that don’t require tags.. They’ll need to DNA test all those.
Jeez this is getting to be a pain in the butt for them to bust me on a couple shed heads that i called, emailed and have field pictures of just to write a couple 100 dollar tickets for “possession of untagged deer parts”... Since they can’t get me on poaching... But if they want to tango. Lets do it.
BTW this was not the Pickaway county GW.. So don't go busting his chops.. He may be a good one...

the reciept you have is the tag from what I have been told. They just write it out on paper "tag" and you have to keep ahold of it for your records.

I use to soak it in bleech and or boil it in water. ( Outside of course over a fire. ). Scrape off the meat after that.
Below is more detailed instructions.
There are different ways to bleach a skull for mounting. But below is the easiest and the fastest method to bleach and preserve your most valuable skulls.
The first thing to do is to prepare the skulls. Start removing the hair and the hide from the skull. Before boiling the skull, see to it that you have removed all its spinal extras and the lower jaw.
Find a pot or a metallic contained large enough to accommodate and completely submerge the skull. Boiling the skull normally results in water boiling past the brim, thus resulting in the smell of deer brain. To avoid this, boil the skull outdoors using propane or a campfire.
If the skull has antlers, keep them away from the water as much as possible since water can unnaturally lighten the antlers. Keep a close eye on the smoke especially if you are using an open flame. The smoke can stain the tips of the antlers that exceed from the pot. However, if you can't deal with the antlers properly, wrapping them in aluminum foil will work well.
To speed up the long process of removing meat, mix dawn dish soap or borax in the water. Remove the skull from the water every twenty minutes so you can scrape meat from the skull. This long and tedious process normally takes about four hours. Be sure to clean and remove even the littlest of meat so that the skull won't smell.
After all the organic material has been removed, be sure to find the teeth. Some teeth loosen and fall out while the skull is being boiled. It is important that you screen the water after boiling the skull so that you can find the missing teeth. Reattach them to the skull using epoxy or glue.
After reattaching the teeth, you can start the bleaching process. Don't use actual bleach but rather peroxide. Commercially-distributed bleaches can weaken the skull. Purchase peroxide from a beauty supply store since you can obtain up to thirty percent of concentrate without having the proper license. Paint the skull with peroxide and let it sit overnight.
Although there is no need to repeat the process, you can still do so especially if you prefer an extra white skull. Rinse the skull with cool water. Seal your skull using a clear gloss acrylic paint, although this is optional.
Have Fun and show us some photo's as you go along.

Thank you very much for the info Riverdude. Now I just need to find a big enough pan ;) .

Your welcome Redcloud.
A pan may work, might want to try a old metal bucket or can. Don't use aluminum with sodering......it will melt.
Best of luck.

Simple Get the users IP from Steve.. Steve can volunteer it or it will be subpoenaed.. I have a feeling if Steve is asked and he thinks the law was broken it will not require a subpoena to get it. Then they will Subpoena Buckslayer87s Internet Provider for what billing address that IP matches.. Pay a visit... Wham bam thank you mam…
Remember the ODNR busting those poachers who posted their picture online on the ODNR website.. All they did was upload a photo to a site and the DNR had their IP… From there they got their address.
Where did Buckslayer get mixed up in this? He hasn't even posted in this thread lol

I have found that if you boil it to long it becomes brittle, what I do is boil it till it looks like it is starting to peal then I take my pressure washer to the thing and just blow it all off, that way you dont loose any teeth also you can blow all the brains out through that little hole.

thought about hanging it in the shed and letting the bloat flies clean it for me :) I will try the boiling first but if it makes me to mad i will just hang it up :D. I like the peroxide idea. I hate the smell of bleach. Thanks for the info and help on that one guys.

They won't be able to tell where it came from. Not really sure what they would do about it. The rule just says you have to have a tag for deer parts so, I figured I would get with the GW to get this deadhead just to cover my butt :)
Pa. doesn't use a tag system like OH.? I would think the tag (paper or metal )you got when you checked it in would be what needs to stay with the head. If you found it like I did already dead and laying in the woods there and you didn't get a tag for it not sure what would happen. I have never come across that one yet and hope to never have that issue :)

They can and will DNA test them... I read it in an article from the DNR where they busted a poaching ring and through DNA tests the found out some of the bucks were poached out of state.

I just wrap my heads in 1/4 in wire screening and tie them to a tree. The bugs do their job and the wire mesh keeps the mice n tree rats from damaging the rack.tie it to the tree cause yotes got one of my first ones!!
