Just got home from the Super Wal Mart here is Lima. They had a .50 cal. Bobcat (Hawken style) muzzle loader for $54.00. It had a blued octagon barrel, synthetic or plastic stock and a plastic but plate. It had a trigger lock on it but I think it had a single trigger. There was a screw under it that looked like it was to adjust the trigger sear engagement. The sights were not adjustable and were set in dovetails. The front was a brass blade. It had the locking breach arrangement like a TC Hawkin but the fit between the back of the breach plug and the front of the locking tang had about 1/16 or a little more gap. The stock was drilled for sling swivels. The guy in the department didn’t know if it came with them. The worst thing I could see with this gun was the gap in the locking breach, the sights would probally need changed and there was some thing on the barrel, at first I thought it was rust but it could have been something stuck on it may be epoxy. I almost had to buy it just to test it out. I may still do it.

Steve,

I've got a CVA Bobcat. Let's put it this way....

Your going to get what you pay for.... It's got a 1/48 twist and (al least mine) only shoots round balls with any sort of accuracy. Sabots and bullets don't shoot worth a damn. I've played with powder loads and different projectiles and round balls are about the only thing that works.

The gun has on trigger and is easy to clean and take care of. If you get it I'd recommend buying a knight hot flash nipple for it.

I never thought about replacing the sites so I may go a head and do that.

The ram rod is nothing but a cheap wooden dowel paited black.

Over all the gun is cheap, but fun to shoot. If you looking for a close range (50 yards max shot) muzzle loader then it may be good to go. If your looking for anything else then spend the money and get a higher $$$ gun.

I didn't know the Bobcat was made by CVA. That explains a lot on the craftsmanship. I just thought it would be something to tinker with through the winter. See if I could make it shoot. The round ball part is fine with me. That is all I shoot anyway. A round ball is plenty to kill a deer.

I already have a TC Hawkin .50 and a green Mt. .32 barrel. TC Gray Hawk it is in a black synthetic stock and a round stainless barrel. My son has a TC Cherokee in .45 & .32. The Hawkin and Cherokee were kits I built and both have double set triggers. I need to get another muzzle loader for my 14 year old son. I probably will get another TC kit. I want them to have something to keep that I built for them.

I have no use for in line muzzle loaders. I got into black powder 25 years ago for the nostalgia of it.

I use to travel the area going to turkey shoots. The only one I went to last year was Shawnee Long Rifles in Wapak. My oldest son use to go with me. He hasn’t shot with me for a few years but he did win a turkey at a local turkey shoot when he was around 14 or 15 years old. He is now going to college in IN.

I never really thought about putting new sights on it. I think I'm going to do that when I return home.

I'll have to take it and get the sights installed. I wonder how hard and how much it'll run.

I'd like to use it during the Spring Hog season. :)

It wouldn’t be very hard to change the sights. I don’t know if I would change them. I think the only reason to change them would be if you can’t see the sights very well. Or if they were so far off target and you can’t adjust them enough to get them on. Of course the only way to adjust them is moving them in their dove tail for windage or fileing the top off for elevation.

If you want to change them all you need is a small hammer and a brass drift punch. You will want to knock out the sight from left to right. ( someone correct me if I have it backwards) While looking down the barrel knock the sights out from left to right. Then install the new ones from right to left. They go back in the way they came out. Look up Dixie Gun Works or Log Cabin Gun Shop on the Internet. I am sure they will have a selection of sights that will work for you.
