We think he's 4.5 years of age...He had 38.5 inches of Mass..which usually indicates more age..Here's a pic..What age do you guys think he
is?
Based on the pic I would say he is about 6.5 years old...he's wasted away to nothing... :mischeif:

I am not even going to try at this one. It has been proven by wildlife biologists that the aging of whitetails by tooth wear is 80% accurate up to the age of 2 1/2, but beyond that it is really just a guess. This deer is definatly over 2 1/2 though.

I would say 3 1/2, maybe 4 1/2... but no older than that. Lingual crests still look fairly sharp, and the last cusp is still well-defined.
I know a lot of people say tooth wear aging is highly inaccurate, but if the ODNR is using it for the age-class harvest surveys every year it must be fairly accurate up to 4 1/2 yrs old. Anything over 4 1/2 they just call it 4 1/2+.
I'm leaning more toward 3 1/2 than 4 1/2. Thanks for sharing Mountaineer.

Top set... pics are a little blurry, but looks like a 2.5 yr old to me. Third premolar is bicuspid and fully erupted, so it's older than 1.5, but not enough wear to be 3.5 yr old. Lingual crests appear to be real sharp.
Bottom set... 6 month old. Less than 6 teeth is always a fawn.

A bit tough to tell because of the sun bleaching, but I'd say that deer is more than likely a 2 1/2 yr old.
What is interesting though is that the last molar only has 2 cusps. Usually it has three cusps. That third cusp is pretty critical when distinguishing between 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 yr olds. This may be the first set that I've seen with only 2 cusps on that last molar. Good find.

Good catch JB.

I think everything in Crawford county is "special"...:D You almost have to be to have a Testical Festival every year. :D
Too bad that 8 pt didn't make it. Looks like he would've been a dandy 3 1/2 or 4 1/2 yr old.

Soo, You have been to that Festival.;) I live here and haven't ever been there. Just sounds wrong if you ask me so I have been afraid to ever go.
Yeah would have loved to see him this year or next for sure. Just hope his dad or twin is still running around :)
