I have been calling coyotes for about 4 years. I haven’t been going out all that much. Most of my hunting has been at night. I use a spotlight with a red lens. This summer work has gotten slow and we have been cut back to 36 hr. per week. . I opted to take Mondays off and work 4 - 9 hr. days. I will be working all weekend on honey-do’s then Mondays I’ll be calling most of the mornings.

I have called in a few but have only gotten 1 shot and missed. The others have came in behind me and got my wind. I am now determined to out wit them. In fact I just received 1 dozen #6 wire stretchers that I am going to fill this winter. I am going to start hunting them on my annual deer hunting trip to Georgia the first week of Nov. Then here in Ohio I will start after them when fox season opens. I have been watching a lot of different predator hunting videos the past few months. They have done a lot for my confidence.

This is going to be the year!

Good luck Buckrun! There are several Yotes running around where I deer hunt in the Mansfield area, but we've yet to be able to get a shot at one. They planted all the fields in the area with corn this year, but that will be coming off in a week or two. I know if I see any in range while in my treestand I'm going to take a shot. Blasted things have ruined what used to be an excellent rabbit woods.

I've been trying for several years now & have yet to call one in that I know of. We got'em & I see'em, but just can't get fur in my scope. :( Maybe this year I'll be able to put more time into it.

Hey guys I have called in fox and coyote successfully before a few times.

Are you guys night hunting???If not that is the way to go.Get one of your buddies and a good spot light, you can use an amber or red lense---but you have to always have some form of white light on while in ohio.

Meet the county sherriff,a few times we were using shotguns, thought we may be deer poachers, not good for the pelts though.trapping is the way to go if you want to make some cash$$.

I saw a pair of reds this week, going in to bow hunt :D :D

Just picked up my 11-87 3 1/2" Mag last nite. I'm thinking this going to be great on coyotes.
Mashhunter18: Have you had any luck calling during the day? I've seen them out all times of the day.

Hey vvarminter,

I never had really much luck during the day,so much so that last year i never even went during the day only at night.More times when we do call one in we dont get a shot.Iv called red fox right at morning light abd at dusk,we usually see reds the most.

I guess I'll have to quit being so cheap & get me one of the 'coon hunting lights. Especially since I got 'coon dogs now.
Don't you worry about shooting the farmers' dog. It doesn't bother me to shoot a dog, especially if it is feral!

Got home Sat from my GA. deer hunting trip. I have been busy processing deer meat. I hope to get started coyote hunting this weekend.
All the coyote hunting videos I have seen are taken during the day. If they can do it I am going to try it myself. I haven’t had much luck doing it in the dark.

Good luck with the hunts,we probually wont get out untill after deer gun season. We have to go out and make lots of stands to see any animals, but what iv found is a couple spots that seem to always have the k-9's.

vvarmitr I have one of those coon lights, but i still use a spotlight,I can never find a good spotlight, that you dont have to carry a battery with......lol.

Good luck with them yotes.

I went calling yesterday at two places. Didn’t see anything. I started calling about 7:10 am. I went out again this morning and started calling at 8:10 am. I have a Fox Pro 16 with a remote. I started this morning with my Sceery open reed far out on the end so it was real high pitched. About 15 - 30 seconds of that then I started the Fox Pro on wood pecker. After 10 - 15 minutes I had some crows come in. I switched to dying crow. I thought I would try to keep the crows their making racket. About this time a gray fox shot through past the call and was gone. I wasn’t in a very open area. No chance for a shot. Shortly after this a coon came past real close but was only visible for a second. It was walking along the dead furrow along the field. I thought it would go out to investigate the dying bird that was playing on the caller but it didn’t. So another day no shots fired but at least I saw something. Sooner or later I’ll connect.

My plan is to try to take some crow decoys along and I cut some bamboo poles while in Georgia last week I can stick the pole in the ground and put a crow on top. This will hold the real crows there while I am calling. I think if I start with crow party on the call. This will get the crows circling then switch to the woodpecker it may look like a realistic situation to a fox or coyote. The only problem is I am already carrying to much stuff. I think I will need a pack mule before it is all over.

Buckrun thanks for the report,I'm still after my deer but as soon as that happens i will switch over to callling some yotes.I got the new cabelas calling rig so i'm chomping at the bit to go give it a try this year.I got the rabbit distress tape and the fox tape so i hope one of those work also still have the Johnny Stewards hand call(rabbit distress).I have not tried the woodpecker before or the crow but sounds like you got a game plan there good luck.i'm about ready to give up on deer and start yote hunting though.

I got one pelt in the freezer so far, and on only my second outing of the year. Hoping to get a few more.

Got him a few weekends ago at about 8:30 am. He came to a combination of starling distress and coyote pup distress on my Foxpro. The shot was about 40 yards. Used the new AR I needed after having called in 5 at one time once last year.

For coyote hunting, I'll take a nice still morning (calling sounds carry further and the wind doesn't blow your scent all over the place) with some snow on the ground (easier to pick up the coyote moving). This one was furred up really nicely and no mange at all. Skinned him and put him in the freezer so be tanned this spring. Hopefully he'll have some company before then!!!!!!!

I have still been trying. Still nothing. I have finished my stock for the .17Rem. Will get it put back together and topped with a Leupold 3-9x40. Hope to get it sighted in this weekend and be out hunting with it again. May be I can get over to Kenton and give it a try.

Buckrun, curious what .17 Rem. you have. One's on my wish list, but I can't justify the cost of a good one yet.

My .17 Rem is a Rem. 700 BDL. I got it at a gun show a couple years ago. It was used and abused. I thought Id give it a try and if it didn’t shoot good enough I’d get it rebarreled. It took me 2 nights to clean all the gunk out of the action and the barrel. After I finished I didn’t have too much hope in getting a shooter. Well with factory ammo it shot under 1 inch at 100 yards. All I can say is I was lucky. I haven’t started shooting reloads yet. I do have the dies and a lot of brass now. I have turned the necks trued the primer pocket and flash hole. I also have several types of bullets ready. All I need is time to put it all together and get to a range to shoot groups.
