Ooooooh Coonskiner that hurt in regards to Mr. Martin. I know he was not the best out there but when he raced you never knew what stunt he was going to pull.
I had a NASCAR game on my playstation, ( Ooooooooh the playstation.......what fond memories I had before the Ex took it ), anyways I would always pick Sterling as my driver. I would make my buddies wreck! :mischeif:

Coonie,
LOL!! I remember that race!! Those were the things I enjoyed watching him for.....how was he going to cheat, who he was going to bump, and how may wrecks he would cause. I don't think he was very popular with the other drivers.
I got a kick out of him for that but he was not my favorite guy on the track. :tsk: Do you know what ever happend to him?

I think you are correct and didn't that cost him a lap? They still have tickets available from $93.00 to $125.00, all the $133.00 tickets are gone.
Man times must be real tuff for NASCAR fans to have Bristol tickets still for sale.

Man coonie, wish I'd have known...I am a season ticket holder at Bristol but I let mine go for the spring race due to the obamanomic situation. Backstretch in the shade, terrace seating, right across from the start/finish line.Had to upgrade several years to get 'em there.

I'm going to the fall night race and will have 2 extra. Ain't nothin' like Bristol !!!

BTW.... I'm taking that 29 car. Harvick's due and he's been pretty good at the bullring.

2002 Daytona 500
On a restart with six laps to go, Sterling Marlin, running second, slowed as he approached the green flag in order to get a run on race leader Jeff Gordon.
Gordon quickly reacted and blocked Marlin and the two cars made contact. Gordon spun out into the grass while Marlin took the lead but suffered damage to his right front fender. At the same time Marlin and Gordon tangled, a multi-car crash broke out.

NASCAR quickly threw out the red flag and stopped all the cars on the Superstretch to clean up the accident. Marlin climbed out of his No. 40 Coors Light Dodge, walked over to his right front and began to pull the fender away from the tire.

Teams are not allowed to work on their machines under the red flag and NASCAR officials quickly ordered Marlin back to his race car and forced him to start at the tail end of the lead lap.

Marlin’s loss was Ward Burton’s gain as Burton went on to lead the final five laps to become the first Virginian to win the Daytona 500.

Burton completes final-laps shootout in Victory Lane

Posted: Sunday February 17, 2002 5:16 http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/motorsports/2002/daytona500/news/2002/02/17/burton_wins_ap/t1_burton_ap-01.jpg (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/motorsports/2002/daytona500/news/2002/02/17/burton_wins_ap/lg_burton_ap-01.html) After his fourth career victory, Ward Burton hoists the trophy after winning the Daytona 500. AP

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Sterling Marlin should have stayed in the car and left the repairs to his crew.
The two-time Daytona 500 winner blew a chance Sunday to make it three, handing Ward Burton the biggest victory of his life.
Following a late red flag, Burton won a three-lap dash to the finish line for his fourth career win in 251 starts.
"A lot of what happens here is atmosphere and luck," a jubilant Burton said. "We had some luck [Sunday]."
Marlin, who received hate mail and death threats from people who blamed him for the crash that killed Dale Earnhardt at last year's Daytona 500, appeared to have the win wrapped up.
With six laps to go, Marlin had spun out leader Jeff Gordon as a pack of cars crashed behind them, then beat Burton back to the yellow flag by less than half a car-length, to grab the top spot.

Head in the clouds Click the image to launch the clip
NASCAR stopped the bizarre, crash-marred event to give the remaining leaders a chance to race for the win. With the cars halted on the backstretch, Marlin unbuckled his seat belts and climbed out of the silver No. 40 Dodge to check out the damage to his right front fender.
He started to pull the bent sheet metal away from the tire, but an official warned him to get back in his car. That little attempt to fix the damage was enough for NASCAR to penalize him for what it called an illegal pit stop, sending his car to the rear of the lead pack after the restart.
"I tried to get it pulled off, but NASCAR didn't like it, and they sent me to the rear," said Marlin, who wound up eighth.
Burton called the last three laps "nerve-racking."
"I didn't even look at the flag," he said. "I wasn't going to stop. When the other guys backed off, I backed off."
As Marlin drove slowly into the pits while the new leader took the green flag on lap 196 of 200, all the contenders behind Burton began to race two-by-two and even three-wide, letting the leader pull away. He crossed the finish line 0.193 seconds -- about three car-lengths -- ahead of Elliott Sadler's Ford.
"You got to be there at the end," Burton said, his voice shaking with emotion. "We were trying to be real careful. I didn't know if we were going to win it, but I knew we were going to have a hell of chance at it. We're ready to rock all year."
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/images/onsite_tabletopper.gif Break of the Race (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/motorsports/2002/daytona500/news/2002/02/17/tony_stewart/): Imagine stepping on the field for the Super Bowl and tearing a hamstring before you work up a sweat. That's about where Tony Stewart found himself.
Hard Charger (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/motorsports/2002/daytona500/news/2002/02/17/hard_charger/): It wasn't quite worst-to-first, but Elliott Sadler's drive in the 44th Daytona 500 felt worthy of a Victory Lane bash. He started 41st and finished second.

Former Daytona winner Geoff Bodine, making a comeback at 52, was a surprising third, followed by Kurt Busch, 2000 race winner Michael Waltrip, Mark Martin and rookie Ryan Newman.
The 44th Daytona 500 began with some question marks, with NASCAR giving both Ford and Dodge a quarter-inch reduction of their rear spoilers Friday with little practice time to see how they would work in the draft.
Chevrolet and Pontiac were considered the big favorites, but the race turned into a 200-lap brawl, with lots of side-by-side action and two big crashes, one of them involving 18 cars and the other a six-car accident.
Gordon, the defending Winston Cup champion who has won the Daytona 500 twice, helped ignite the big one when Kevin Harvick, last year's top rookie, tried to block him on lap 149 as the two battled for second place.
Gordon tagged Harvick's rear bumper and sent him spinning up the banking into the wall. Harvick's car then slid back down the track right in front of a pack of cars racing at close to 190 mph.
Kenny Wallace's car erupted in flames in the middle of the melee, but nobody was injured in the first big test of a NASCAR safety initiative that was accelerated after Earnhardt's death in a last-lap crash here last February.
Rule 10-5The 2002 NASCAR Winston Cup series rulebook preventing any repairs on a car during a red flag:

Red Flag -- The red flag means that the race must be stopped immediately regardless of the position of the cars on the track. The red flag shall be used if, in the opinion of NASCAR Officials, the race should be stopped. Cars should be brought to a stop in an area designated by NASCAR Officials. Repairs or service of any nature or refueling will not be permitted when the race is halted due to a red flag. All work must stop on any car in the pits and/or garage area when the red flag is displayed, unless the car has withdrawn from the Event. Work cannot be resumed until the red flag is withdrawn (race is restarted).

"I took a pretty hard hit right in the door and all the new safety stuff did its job," said Ricky Rudd, who was in the middle of the first crash.
Several drivers blamed the crashing and the banging on new aerodynamic rules, intended to slow the cars down and make it harder to pass. They said they were forced to block continuously or lose positions in bunches.
"There's no give, just take, take, take," said Todd Bodine, who was caught up in the 18-car crash. "When you have something like that all day, something like this is bound to happen."
Rudd said the pace was too slow.
"It feels like you're running 60 miles an hour out there, so everybody feels like a hero and takes a lot of chances," he said.
Seventeen cars were still left on the lead lap after that crash and the hard racing continued.
It appeared Gordon had everybody right where he wanted them when, with Marlin pushing his Chevy from behind, he passed Busch for the lead on lap 177. Marlin followed into second.
It stayed that way until after another flag for a crash by Robby Gordon on lap 191. On the restart on lap 195, with cars crashing well behind them on the main straightaway, Marlin tried to pass Jeff Gordon on the low side.
Gordon slid over to block and the two came together, with Gordon sliding sideways and skidding into the infield grass, ending his shot at another Daytona win. He wound up ninth.

"I probably should have given it up once he got beside me," Gordon said. "That was my own fault. ... He had a run on me and I blocked him and got myself turned.
"It was a wild and crazy race. I went from the back to the front and the front to the back," Gordon said.
Marlin was smiling despite the unhappy ending.
"Jeff did what he should have done. He should block. I had a run on him and got up on his quarterpanel. I knew it was going to be close. I thought he would pull back and let me go by," Marlin said.
"It's the Daytona 500. You've got to do everything you can to win."
Burton, who led only the last four laps, averaged 142.971 mph to give Dodge its first Daytona 500 victory since 1974. He won with the same car in which he led a race-high 53 laps in 2001 before crashing late in the race. His best previous finishes in seven Daytona 500s were a pair of eighths.
Although NASCAR's new aerodynamic rules were intended to put a premium on passing, there were 20 lead changes among 12 drivers and plenty of excitement for the 190,000 spectators at Daytona International Speedway and the big national television audience.
Two of the top contenders were eliminated from contention early, with the engine in Tony Stewart's Pontiac blowing on the third lap, and two flat tires and an accident relegating Dale Earnhardt Jr. to 29th.
Two of the most-watched drivers in the race also had problems. Shawna Robinson, the second woman ever to race here and the first since 1980, finished 24th in only her second Winston Cup start, and 60-year-old Dave Marcis ended his long career with a 42nd-place finish in his record 33rd Daytona 500 start.
"At one point, we ran out of fuel. That didn't help us any," Robinson said. "It was kind of survival. I think my head is still spinning a little.
"We accomplished something, but I want to be competitive," she said.
Marcis, the oldest driver ever in this race, went out with an overheated engine.
"We didn't want it to end like this," he said.

With that track position to start, Jeff Gordon and Biffle should be favorites. I'll have to look to see where the Busch bros start from...they are both tough at Bristol.

Would like to see Mark Martin win again. I agree, Junior has too much going on...but he should be good at Bristol too if his car holds up and he don't wreck :mischeif:

their track is much tougher,it would take a nascar driver a while to learn to race a shuttle...:D

Coonie, and NASCAR does not use traffic lights like the ole shuttle bus drivers have to put up with. Does not seem fair using the lights, that allows other buses to catch up to the pack.
Bet the shuttle drivers don't get laped either. :D
Have a good evening,

BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) - A month into the season, Dale Earnhardt Jr. (http://msn.foxsports.com/nascar/cup/driver?statsId=88&categoryId=168) is already feeling the heat.

He can handle it.
Just lay off his cousin, please.
Earnhardt on Friday reiterated his fierce loyalty to Tony Eury Jr., his oft-criticized crew chief. Eury has occasionally drawn fire for Earnhardt's failure to win a Cup championship, and fan disapproval has increased with Earnhardt's slow start this season.
He came to Bristol Motor Speedway on Friday ranked 24th in the Sprint Cup Series standings with just one top-10 finish through the first four races.
Earnhardt said if anyone is to blame, it's him.

"The guy that I feel bad for is Tony Jr. He gets criticized so badly," he said. "Everybody in this room, and some of you have criticized him, know how smart a guy he is and that he's a good mechanic and a solid crew chief. He just wants to do this for a living, just like I do. I'll take the fall. I'd rather be crucified than him.
"Every time I read in the paper that people are on his case I feel like I'm sending my brother to jail for a crime I committed."

In some respects, he's right.
Eury had nothing to do with the two pit road mistakes Earnhardt made during the season-opening Daytona 500, and he wasn't inside the car when Earnhardt's contact with Brian Vickers (http://msn.foxsports.com/nascar/cup/driver?statsId=351&categoryId=168) triggered a nine-car accident that led to a 27th-place finish.
The engine failure the next week in California certainly wasn't Eury's fault, either. But after two races, Earnhardt was 36th in the standings, and his rabid fan base was starting to panic.
A 10th-place finish in Las Vegas and an 11th in Atlanta helped him climb from the back of the standings, but it's done little to quell the critics. Those who are against Eury want him gone, regardless of Earnhardt's steadfast insistence that he's the right man for the job.
"There's risks between every driver and every crew chief, and either you work it out or you don't," Earnhardt said. "I think me and Tony Jr. do a pretty good job of working it out. Obviously, through everything we've been through, we still love each other to death, and we'd do anything for each other.
"I don't dread seeing him when I get to the race track. I can't wait to see him when I get to the race track. We really do enjoy working together."
The two have been together in some capacity since Earnhardt first entered NASCAR in 1996. Their only time apart was when Earnhardt's stepmother, Teresa, insisted they be split during the 2005 season because of the way they'd bickered to close out the year before.
The split was an unmitigated disaster.
Although Eury was happy working with Michael Waltrip (http://msn.foxsports.com/nascar/cup/driver?statsId=19&categoryId=168), Earnhardt was in a freefall that derailed the entire year. When Earnhardt failed to earn a spot in the Chase for the championship, Eury was sent back to run the team with 10 races to go in the season.
Earnhardt still finished a career-worst 19th in the standings.
But they rebounded to win a race in 2006 and make the Chase, finishing fifth but failing to contend for the title. The next year was one distraction after another as Earnhardt made the emotional decision to leave Dale Earnhardt Inc.
He signed with Hendrick Motorsports shortly after, and Eury was committed to stay with his cousin wherever he went.
"I've made this clear ... the biggest thing was I wanted to be a part of it," Eury said Friday. "That's all I'll ever say. I'd like to work on Dale Jr.'s cars and him have the trust that somebody is doing the best job they can possibly do for him and he can be surrounded by the best people.
"Whether it's me setting up cars or me cleaning the cars, I couldn't care less. I just want to be a part of his deal."
As far as the people at Hendrick Motorsports are concerned, Eury is still the best man for the job. "It's unanimous still to this day that Tony Eury Jr. is the guy for Junior and possibly the only guy for Junior," teammate Jeff Gordon (http://msn.foxsports.com/nascar/cup/driver?statsId=3&categoryId=168) said. "Their relationship and how they communicate is second-to-none. We all know that it's easy to get through the good days. On the tough days, although those guys scream and yell, at the end of the day they still smile and joke about it and seem to only get closer."

Jeffy says everything is ok

Guess Connie had the right idea to go out in the woods and do some scotting instead of siiting in front of the TV. :D
I thought the race was average at best, not really exciting except the one bump.
7 yellows and they were all spinouts except the blown engine with 5 or 6 laps to go. No fights, no fist-a-cuff's, no helment throwing. Maybe next week at Martinsville with another short track it will be a little more exciting.
Kyle Bushing winning??
I was bummed for Sterling, did not even get 100 laps in and gone. He must have left and hooked with with Connie. :D
Oh well.

If I wanted to see spin outs all I have to do is get on I90 heading west to Cleveland or east to Erie PA during a winter storm up here and I can see that! :yikes:
