CLEVELAND -- The Browns have traded tight end Kellen Winslow to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for undisclosed draft picks.
A source close to the Browns said he will receive Tampa Bay's second-round pick in 2009 and fifth-round pick in 2010.
Winslow made the Pro Bowl in 2007, but ran afoul of the organization in 2008 and was considered likely to be traded by the previous regime. The new management team of General Manager George Kokinis and coach Eric Mangini obviously agreed it was time for the 2004 No. 1 draft pick to move on. In Tampa, Winslow said, "Cleveland treated me right. Everything didn't go as planned there but I had a good time playing there. Cleveland was great to me. I had a great time playing with Braylon Edwards, Brady Quinn. I'm going to miss those guys. But it's a new opportunity and I've played with some of the guys on this team -- Jeff Faine, Antonio Bryant, Luke McCown."
In Tampa, Winslow will rejoin Alfredo Roberts, who was his tight ends coach in Cleveland the past two seasons.
In a prepared statement, Kokinis said, "The Cleveland Browns thank Kellen for his contributions to this organization over the past five years. We appreciate his passion for the game and wish him success in Tampa Bay. The draft picks we have obtained through this deal will give us greater flexibility as we look to infuse more talent and create competition and depth on this football team."
Before the trade, the Browns were without picks in the third, fifth and seventh rounds. The trade now gives them three picks on the first day of the April 25 draft.
Winslow was the last first-round draft pick of the Butch Davis era in 2004. Davis traded the Detroit Lions a second-round pick to move up one spot to select Winslow at No. 6 overall. Pittsburgh took Miami (Ohio) quarterback Ben Roethlisberger at No. 11.
In five years in Cleveland, Winslow played in 44 games and missed 36. He had 219 catches for 2,459 yards and 11 touchdowns. He tied Ozzie Newsome's club record with 89 catches in 2006 and followed with 82 in 2007, making the Pro Bowl as an alternate.
What do you think about the trade of Kellen Winslow? I'm glad he's gone, for the team's sake. I like him, but he deserves a team that will appreciate him. Good idea, but a bad trade -- they should have gotten more for him.
Winslow and the Browns had numerous differences in their five seasons together.
In only his second game as a pro, he broke a leg and disclocated an ankle while trying to recover an onside kick. He missed the remainder of his rookie season.
The following May, Winslow was practicing tricks on a high-powered motorcycle and suffered severe injuries to his right knee. A staph infection set in after one surgery and resulted in complications that plague him to this day.
Winslow has had a surgical procedure on the knee every year since.
Winslow told Tampa media that he is misunderstood.
"People don't really know me yet," Winslow said. "I think everybody makes mistakes and the mistake I made was when I was 19 yers old. I'm 25 now and was on national television and everybody got to see it. I stand before you now, I think I'm a changed man."

I think it was a bad trade! Winslow had the best hands on the team! He was our 3rd down go to guy! He played harder than anyone on the team and gave it his all every game. They didn't use him in Cleveland like they needed to. He did have an attitude problem, but I think that was because he wanted to win so badly and as we all know the Brownies don't win much. I don't think we got enough for him in the trade either. A 2nd round pick this year and a 5th rounder in 2010. I hope us Browns fans aren't planning on winning season anytime soon! I don't think new coach Eric Mangini is going to take us to the promise land either. Every year I come into the season with high hopes and usually by week 6 I force myself to put on my Jersey and watch a game! This season I will approach it differently...I am gonna expect them to suck and maybe they will do ok!

I dont think anyone wants to come play for Cleveland. I sure dont want to pay big money for a ticket only to see them lose. But at least we aint Detroit. I just wish we could beat them Steelers! So much for wishful thinking.

Id say Winslow had the best hands on your team. That said , he definitley came off like a whiney jerk , not to mention his injuries. Are they now banking on "big catch" Braylon? As far as beating the Steelers....Crap in one hand , wish in the other.:D

They should have traded Braylon instead! I hate Winslow, and i think his attitude is detrimental to the team, but he was the most dependable reciever on the team. A 2nd round in 09 and a 5th in 10 is definately not enough either. Oh well, Hieden isnt that bad and maybe we will draft a solid pair of hands.
