Subocto,

I'm from Toledo and I'm planning my first steelhead trip in that direction as well (although due to the unpredictabilty of my job and family life, I never know exactly when I'm going to have free time). Based on my research, it looks like the Vermillion River and the rivers eastward would be the places to try. I scouted the Rocky River (west side of Cleveland) last week and there is fantastic access all through the Rocky River Reservation Metropark area.

Go to yahoo.com, select "maps" and type in "Rocky River, Ohio". You can zoom in for better detail.

Also, check this out: www.ohiodnr.com (http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/wildlife/Fishing/fairport/steelhead.htm)

Other members on this site have given me a lot of help so far. Now if I could only make time to try it all out!

The steelies are really starting to run now. It will take a little while for them to get up river very far. Subocto, the closest river with any good steelie run is the Huron. It enters the lake in Huron Ohio, and good fishing can be found all the way down through Milan, Ohio. Ther is also good fishing on the Vermilion River. This is a smaller wadeable river once you get a few miles south of the lake. There is a good public access right under the Rt 2 bridge over the river. You would be looking at a one and a half hour drive from Toledo.

Buckeye Bill,

I'm excited to hear that about the Huron! Does it get a decent run of fish? How are the crowds compared to the rivers to the east?

Do the fish make it as far as the Milan Wildlife Area or is that too far upstream?

The Huron would definitely shave some time off the drive.

i may be down there soon , I hope!

are the streams smaller/ wadeable or bigger water?

The Huron River is a short drive further than the Sandusky/Cedar Point area. The rivers are small and generally wadeable except for maybe their last sections before they join Lake Erie. Hopefully, all this rain we're getting won't make them unwadeable.
