Anyone ever fish for smallies in the Licking river? Thinking about trying it this year and was wondering what would be a good bait for early spring.

I have not fished it myself, but I have heard really good things about it. I would like to try it sometime. I am sure if you get off the beaten path a little ways you will get into some nice ones. I know they're in there.

This time of year try a grub/twister tail on a 1/4 oz jighead. S-L-O-W would be the key. Until the water temps get near 50 it's a tough bite. However, once it hits the 50 mark then the bite tends to get much better in rivers in this area.

Yeah, a buddy and me hit a local creek for some smallies yesterday. Paddled 7 miles and only came up with 4 fish. They were't very active yesterday.

licking river is good for smallies and large, i normally fish it after may with poppers and buzz baits around structures, good times like critter said get off the beaten path, pull up a map online and find some access points and scout it out. i only got one largemouth out of eastfork friday used a storm 2" sunfish, had other hits just didnt getem to hold, i was goin to fast i suppose. stay low and slow good luck!!

I caught a couple of those many years ago. Haven't seen one in a long time. Definitely unusual.
