I am trying to build information on where in Ohio there are grouse populations. Could you all please tell me where you've seen them and how many? As specific as you are willing to be would be great!
thanks!

I hunt harrison county on private property where no one is shooting grouse and none have been shot in the past 10 years. In past years there were always one or two grouse in certain apots. I heard a little drumming last spring, but never heard or saw a grouse this fall or winter or saw a track. The place is loaded with turkeys, I would safely estimate about 100 during deer season, and likewise, there are coyotes continually being seen and shot. Its got to be the coyotes getting them.

I jumped three this year deer hunting, and 2 a couple weeks ago while i was shed huntin. I saw them on my club in jeffereson county, this year i saw five, last year i saw 12. Those were the first tweleve i have i ever seen, so i tink the popluation, might be on a rise in that certain area. But i dont no, and i was in the woods a ton last year.

I love in Pike county and have been shed hunting alot. Everytime I walk the edges of pine stands and clear cuts I jump them. This year I been up there three times and jumped one every time with very little walking. Last year I jumped together in a spot.

I live near Salt Fork Park. Used to have a lot of grouse around. Not anymore. I had one living behind the house 3 years ago. Use to flush him often going back there. One day he was no longer there. Have not seen one behind the house or at the park since. In the 70s, the woods around Leesville Lake in Carrol county had lots of grouse. It was the only place that I actually got some. Never got a limit.

This muzzleloader season i saw one at Salt Fork, and last turkey season i kicked one up while i was emptying the tank, scared the living crap out of me, that was in belmont county. As far as i know there arent any up north, at least near my place.

Saw some on the property we hunt, Tusc and Harrison counties. Too bad I didn't get to grouse hunt this fall. Too many problems with old dogs and my health. blah  At least I've not harmed my breeding population for my habitat work.

I jumped 3 in Pike county this fall, and heard another drumming.
Natural succession. Ohio was once full of new growth primary succession, now its matured into saw timber. If we want grouse back we need to start wacking.

I keep a pretty detailed journal of wildlife sighting for my property in Morgan co. For grouse it's just plain sad. The last time I jumped any grouse (it was actually a double) was the spring of '02. No spring or fall drummings either since. I bought my place in '96. Mid to late 90's drumming was routine in the spring and even the fall at times. I would always jump a few while deer hunting walking the woodlines and secondary growth. Nothing since '02. I don't get it? I've heard all the reasons why the number are low- too many turkeys, too many predators, second growth becoming timber, cyclic populations, etc... I'm not exactly sure myself for the decline but I think this once super Ohio game bird is on its way to extinction in Ohio. Just sad.

I can't remember the last time i seen one around here. Only thing I have noticed is huge increase in raccoons.:nono: The place i hunt we have had an explosion of the stupid things. We had some guys come in and killed a mess of them and still have a bunch running around. Seems they kill one and 2 take it's place. Those things eat about everything they think might be edible so there goes any ground eggs.
