I was just wandering if anyone could tell me what makes an area more prone to have an abundant amount of fox squirrels then it does grays and vice versa. Is it the terrain or food supply or both. Its not that I just hunt the fox ones; but when I was growing up it was rare to see a fox squirrel but here lately I've seen alot. It seems the areas I see them have walnut trees and hilly, rocky terrain; as when I was younger all I hunted was few hills and mainly area with alot of hickories and Oaks. Thanks for the input.

From my experience I tend to see fox squirrels in more of a farm type of area. When hunting fox squirrels I look for a woods that has fields around the edges. I also tend to see more grey squirrels in terrain that is mostly all woods, like southen ohio. But you are correct, In the past few years I have seen alot more fox squirrels than in the past. This is just from my experience.

I've been told that fox squirrels like an open woods with very little underbrush. My own experience seems to bear that out. My woods used to have a lot of squirrels until it got grown over with underbrush and multi-flora rose bushes. Now I never see squirrels and the woods has hickory, walnut, oak and cherry. Plenty of food, but no squirrels. Too much underbrush? Maybe, but how do you get rid of multi-flora rose bushes without a bulldozer?

I got a batch of fox squirrels, cooked on the grill then slow roasted in BQ sauce in a crockpot. We will be eating them for a snack tonight. Our night before "BOWSEASON" get together!

You're screwed! You can't poison it in the woods because the same type of poison that will kill it will also kill the trees.
However, as your woods gets a thicker canopy it will block the sun out that the multi-flora needs & the woods will open back up again. I am assuming that you had your woods logged sometime ago.
In the mean time blood, sweat, & tears are what it takes to get rid of it. :(
