I am in the process of ordering a new crossbow. I can get a new Horton Summit 150 HD for about $275 with scope and quiver and three carbon bolts.
Anyone here have one? is this a good crossbow for that price? Keep in mind I have some physical limitations, cant walk too far or carry too much.
Reviews please!

I just picked up a Summit 150 combo at Vance's last week for $269. I haven't used it yet but did some research and seems to be the way to go for low cost cross bow.

I bought the Summit 150 on Christmas Eve and took my first deer with it last weekend. It shoots fast and accurate, and feels really good (I liked the grip better than the more expensive Hortons when testing them at BassPro). The safety gives a loud click when you move it to the "fire" position, I wish it were quieter. But overall, I can't see spending any more money on an upscale bow when this great bow gets the job done. Everyone I've talked to about it convinced me I could trust Horton, and they were absolutely correct.

I did go to Bass Pro and tried some of their Hortons the bigger ones and the recurved crossbows which i think are awfully long to go through the brush and definitely wont fit in my chair blind. the horton 175 were pretty heavy too. the Summit was :shorter, lighter, easier to carry than the recurved and approximately the same FPS and poundage. So, I have it coming in the mail, unfortunately it wont arrive till February 3rd, after archery season .
Oh well, guess I'm gonna get a lot of practice time in with it!

Hamiton, you're gonna love it. And yes, it's gonna be a long wait till next deer season. One note: the body of the bow is molded, with spots front and back to attach a sling. The hole on the front broke out on mine while I was climbing into a treestand and my bow hit the ground from about 5 ft. (there's not alot of material around that hole) It was really cold (about 10 deg) the morning it happened, maybe that made the composite brittle. Luckily the fall didn't affect the sighting. I haven't contacted Horton yet but I'm hoping they can help me out. If not, I can make a repair, but it will be interesting to see how they handle the problem.

Dannmann,Did you have a sling on it?
I plan on buying one too for mine. And thanks for the reply. I am stoked about the Horton, i have an "Eagle III" right now and just aint happy with it at all. Had to modify the quiver mount with JB Weld to make it fit, the site sucks, and it still isnt very consistent even at thirty feet.
Gonna go out today with it though, still got two days left and some feed for them hungry varmints. Seems like that is all i have been doing this year is feeding them and shooting over their backs.

You can't go wrong with a Horton in my opinion. The quality and customer service should you ever need it is top notch. I really enjoy my Horton and have never heard anyone speak badly about them

Yep, I had it slung over my back when the sling holder broke. Like I said, there's not a lot of meat around the sling pin and it broke right out in the cold. The red dot sight on the Horton is pretty cool, but I've found two things out: 1) You have to make sure the cap that holds the battery in is screwed down really tight or it doesn't make a good contact and you'll think your battery is dead and 2) in the cold, the batteries seem to lose their power (like any other battery) and again, you might think your battery is dead or the reddot won't be as bright as it should. An experienced hunter advised me to keep an extra battery with me and he was sure right. I really like the red dot sight, but I'm thinking about getting a traditional crosshair scope, 'cause I'd hate to miss out on a good shot because the red dot wouldn't come on. Anybody have any thoughts about that?

Dannmann, have the same problem with the red dot i have on one of my long guns.
Coonie, I have an old(er) Fred Bear Black Bear that I bought for $15 (yes, fifteen dollars) that just needed a new string.Really love that bow. My SIL is using it now.
My problem is with a couple of spinal fusions, one in my low back and one in my neck I cant hold the draw any more. So, that is why i went to a crossbow.
I'm looking for an old traditional long bow for some spring and summer practice with him and the Grandson.

Called Horton today to explain the problem with the sling point - they are sending out some swivels that I can install myself, said they'd get them out next week. Putting them on will not affect the bow's warranty. Customer service rep was very helpful and knowledgable; very good customer service experience.

I killed two deer in one day at a controlled hunt with my Horton Summit 150 hd. It was awsome, my buddy and me killed 4 deer within 2 hours. You will like the bow.

hortons are top notch xbows , i have one friend that hunts with a 200 pounder, and a few others who have the 150 pounders, every one loves em , my best friend put a headshot on a doe a few years back with his 200 pounder went straight through and buried about 4 inchs into the tree 10 yards behind the deer, they are very powerful bows

Horton moved all production to China in the fall of 2008. I think there are 6-7 people left at Horton North America after there mass layoff. You will soon find out how good customer service and production is. I also heard their warranty package will be decreasing. Time will tell.

Just got my Horton Summit 150 in the mail today FINALLY!
Was supposed to get it back in the end of February before the end of season but they were back ordered.
Anyway, took it out in the back yard and shot off acouple of the cheapy aluminum bolts they sent.
Fisrt shot, high and elft, second shot two inches off l;eft of center. I dont know exactly how to calibrate this red dot scope.
will be looking for pointers on siting it in from the gang her.
But I am excited to have it. Seems plenty powerful enough, and i was worried about being able to cock it without the string cocking aid but managed to pull it back after the let off O.K. They still hadnt sent that string cocker or the carbon bolts that were supposed to come with it. Over all, i look forward to sllinging a lot of them at my targets with my SIL and grandson .
He wants to be like "Grandpa and Daddy" so we got him a small bow and arrow set and explained that he only gets to shoot with one of us and never at anything but the targets or it gets taken away.
I want the boy to learn respect for them early. My Dad was a LEO for many years and everyone in the family learned gun safety first thing.

Ham, I'm sure you're gonna like it. I got my issue with the broken sling holder taken care of (they sent me the swivel holder to put on myself) and the red dot sight, when working, does a good job. Adjusting it is just like adjusting a scope, just follow the directions in the manual.

The problem with my red-dot sight (and it's their bottom-of-the-line sight that came with it) is that the connections aren't making contact well...I had it turned to "O" (off) and the dot was still on! Thing is just giving me fits...so I called them and got a return number and will send it back. They are currently backordered and don't have a solid date for the replacement, said it could be as much as 6-8 weeks. They gave me no problem about it and the serviceperson was very courteous and knowledgeable. But I think I'm going to invest in a scope - no batteries to worry about.

Also, I asked them about arrows, because Bass Pro has been out of stock forever...and Horton is out now too...so that's a pain in the butt.

I asked about the "China Connection" and she told me that they manufacture their high-end bows here in the states and the low-end bows (like the Summit) in China. She did say that they own their own factory there and are able to control material and quality issues, for what that's worth.

All in all, I still love the bow. And the company has been very good to deal with.

Hawke optics makes a great crossbow scope. It has a etched reticle so you can either use it with illuminated or not. Here is a good video on how this scope works. i just bought one and couldn't be happier.
