I was fortunate enough to be the guest of Kaiser878 this past weekend for what is no doubt the best day of waterfowling in my short lived career. I know it was also a top-notch day for the three seasoned hunters I was with. It was great to finally meet Zach and I was really impressed with his dog Leo that braved the ice and cold to retrieve 19 of 21 birds that morning.
Zach called me on my way to his house to tell me they had found the only open water in the whole county outside the river. He said if the birds stayed in that pit, we would be in them thick all morning. As we crested the bank at 7AM the next morning, at least 1,500 birds flew off an open spot of water no larger than a basketball court. It was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. Zach was right and we were in the ducks all morning long. We ended up with 21 ducks and a goose at the end of the day. Zach's buddy took his first Pintail and his buddy's dad also shot a nice Pintail. We killed 7 different species of duck and had a blast doing it. Who knew negative temps could be so much fun!
The most amazing thing about that morning was watching the water freeze in a matter of seconds. Not ten minutes after I killed the first bird of the morning in open water, it was frozen into 1/8' of ice. You could actually hear the water freezing! It was incredible...
