I've been on the Erie enough to know, if it has a motor, chance's are, you have seen it on the ice. Has anyone seen any truck's or car's out yet?
I have an old soft top jeep now. What would I need to do to make it ice ready by DNR standard's? Also, is there a crack out off Catawba yet? Seem's like there was alway's one around a 1/2 mi. out.

Looking at the latest satellite imagery, I don't think there is any open water in the western basin at this point. I know there are some areas along the south shore west of PC that have thin(3-4"s report) ice. However, if there is no place for the ice to get pushed to, it should remain unless we get warm temps and/or rain. A viscious wind could bust it up, but for now, I would not expect a crack to open up west of Catawba. Looking at the long range forcast I would say ice season will be open on Erie for a couple weeks at least and possibly more.

Most have reported ice off Catawba to be 8-10". I don't think it is ready for a jeep yet. In fact, I don't think I would ever have the stones to drive a car/truck/jeep onto the ice of Erie. I wish I had a 4 wheeler or a sled.
