The turnips we planted this year have been eaten to the bare dirt. The field now smells like rotting cabbage. Is this normal? I Hadn't noticed it before 12/24. Is it the root rotting under the soil in all this wet weather?

yes it is normal with brassica plots that I have planted, as for is root rott under the ground Im not sure. I would imagine it is from uneaten but killed vegetation above ground.

I used to grow turnips to sell. We've had cold enough weather to rot the turnips.

There are still turnips under the ground without their vegetation above them. The vegetation got eaten, the turnips died / then rotted / Then smelled like dead rotting turnips...

Yep, normal! I ate a turnip out of one of our plots a few weeks ago on the way out of the woods...well, part of it, anyway. I'm still kicking, so it must be fit to eat.

Thanks guys. We really had good success with the turnips this year. They were planted a little late, but worked as advertised. The deer left them alone until the serious frosts/snow hit. Once they started eating them, the deer ate them all. Can't wait to put more in next year.:bouncy:

You're lucky, they hammer ours well before any frosts. Last year we hunted the archery opener on a small turnip plot and had deer feeding in it all night long. Same results this year. They do love 'em!

My southern Ohio turnip and food plots are now bare dirt. I could play putt-putt golf on them. My northern Ohio turnips appear to have been untouched. Some were 2 foot tall. The snow knocked them down but they are still there. That just shows how much the deer densities vary between Portage and Jefferson counties.
