Bow hunting (for deer) this evening and I had a nice Black Bear come within spitting distance of the tree I was hunting. That was only the second bear I've ever seen from a stand. They are very sleathy for thier size. I got a few pictures but t was getting late and didn't really have enough light to get a real crisp pic, but enough to tell what it is anyway. Well the walk into the stand in the pre dawn darkness outta be a little more interesting tomorrow.

That's got to feel real strange to go into the stand knowing you could be the hunted , just might make me want to take the day off. LOL:D

Last spring a black bear was hit by a car in Portage county....Near ravenna....It wasnt injured bad and ran off.....Ya know i think i would have a heart attack if i was walkin to my stand in the morning and saw a big old bear......close up with the flashlight...lol:p
I went bear hunting in Canada this last Aug, and I was always the last one picked up, after dark. You want to talk about a creepy feeling walking at least a mile down a stone logging road after dark, and hearing critters moving around in the woods. By the way Canadian law say you must have your gun unloaded and in a case after dark. I really appreciated the pepper spray I had with me.

Well I made it back again.,walked to the same tree where I saw Mr. Bear, in the dark no less. All was quite and peacefull, saw no more bears. The only thing I did different this trip was to make double sure my sharp knife was handy, and since it wasn't real cold this mornig I left the LaCross Big Burly Insolated rubber boots at home and wore my Nike tennis shoes, going for mixium speed. .Just in case :D better safe than breakfast.
I did see a button buck, bow hunting is awesome!!!

I am in the process of moving to Dayton, Ohio from Central Pennsylvania and can honestly say that I will miss the bear we have. I have lost count of the personal bear encounters over 20 years of hunting and hiking. The worst thing that has ever happened was a bear clacking his jaws at me from a distance of 40 yards. He was more scared than me when he finally realized what I was! A few years ago a 400+ pound bear killed one of our miniature horses and came back for his kill when me and two other guys were standing over it - I had to shoot that bear. I have only two words of caution, do not get between a momma and her cubs and worse yet, do not get between a bear and its kill. Other than that, they are much more afraid of you than you are of them. If it makes you feel better, carry "Bear Strength" pepper spray. Enjoy the bear, they add an exciting element to the woods.

i have not yet seen a bear in the woods of ohio, but i see his tracks now and again while hunting in perry county.
A friend of mine was camping down at Bur Oak, in the days when the ODNR was still saying there were no bear in OH. While he was out hunting the guy in the camper next to his campsite vidiotaped a bear tear his tent a part.
