I found this catfish floating in my pond. I thought he had died of old age until I looked in his mouth. The bluegill he choked on was lodged in there sideways with it's dorsal fins straight up. The bluegill was 9-1/2 inches long and the catfish was 32" long.

Once while running our trotlines, we had a line with a lot of slack knocked in it, wich usually means you have or had a big fish on. About a quarter of the way down, we had a hook all slimed up, and could tell we had a lost a cat. At the end of the line we had a forty plus pound flathead. After boating the fish, we could see a tail in his mouth. He had a 22" channel cat that had his mouth ripped up. He had ripped the channel cat off our previous hook, and kept on feeding only to get caught himself!

I'm sure this sounds fishy. I have pics of the fish, but not with the channel cat in it's mouth. LOL!
It was a cool catch!

How big is your pond?
8/10 of an acre, 18 feet deep max, built and stocked in 1990, lots of big fish.

Nice. That seems like a big fish for such a small place. I bought property last year, and I would love to put a pond on it, but I really can't do much until I get out of the navy.

There's quite a bit of water in a pond that big and deep. I have many catfish in the 28-33" range that I feed regularly. Also have largemouth, smallmouth, crappie, bluegill up to 10", and walleye between 18-28" long. There is a lot of recreational value to having a pond on your property. There is some work involved to keep it nice, but it is well worth the time and money.
Here is a picture of it on Easter morning 2007 from the back window.

Oh, that's a nice looking pond. Sounds like and interesting mix of fish in there to. What's the biggest wally you have pulled out of there? I recall reading a while back that a pond much deeper than 8' ins't all that necessary. Was there a specific reason you had it built to a depth of 18'?

I didn't have it built, previous landowner did. I guess the soil conditions were good enough to build it that deep. There are many benefits to a deep pond, oxygen and a lot more water and room for fish to name a couple. The pond seems to keep itself a lot cleaner also.
I have caught a 28" walleye, but most of them are 18-24". I always release them back to be caught again. It is fun just to see what lure that you can catch them with. I have caught them on crankbaits, jigs with twister tails, and even caught one on a bass spinner bait. The most effective bait is a 4-6" live bluegill hooked through the top of the back about 4' below a bobber. Believe it or not, we caught a walleye last summer at night fishing with a hot dog while trying for catfish. I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't seen it.

Here are a couple of live walleyes that I caught and went back in the pond. I don't have any more pics on my computer right now, but I'll see if I can find some others.
