There is a strip of woods on private land about 75 yards wide that runs along a gravel township road that the deer travel through. The road is out in farm country with no houses nearby. We were wondering if we hung a stand in there would it be legal to shoot a bow or shotgun that close to the road??? Anyone know the rule/law???

Will you be shooting across the road?

You would be legal. You just can't shoot across a road.

You have to be off the right of way. Rule of thumb, the utility poles are not on the right of way. If you are farther back (from center of the road) then the poles you are legal.

You cannot shoot on, across, along, or from a road. Like ohiosam said, stay off the right-a-way and shoot away from the road and you should be fine. I'd stay 30-40' from the edge of the road just to avoid any unwanted issues...

We have several sections of woodlots that we hunt exactlt like this. Usually about 15' from the burm is our rule. Hell, the Game Warden will park down the road and watch us do drives where our posters are just 20' off the road and he has never said a word. In Southern Wood County, almost every country road has a Big ditch running along it, and it's very common for us to lay along the edge peeking over while driving deer. I know a few people on here (Coonie) don't like this style, but it's very effective and really about the only sensible way to get shots at deer after gun season starts. Not picking at you Coonie, I understand what part of deer drives you hate, as we have several groups around my area that send a few guys through sections, whether they have permission or not, while the rest sit in cars along the roads and then run the deer down.

You just can't be on the road (right of way) or shoot across the road as others have already mentioned.
I'll never forget a specific part of my hunters safety class related to this. The instructor asked how far off the road you had to be and there were people (including adults) saying things like; "100 feet" "1000 feet" "100 yards" etc. I was only 10 at the time and I couldn't help but laugh. If that was the case the amount of huntable land in many parts of the state would be greatly decreased.

Years back the rule, I believe was 500'. Not sure exactly when they changed it but the current regulation has been in for at least 10 years or so.

It's hasn't been 500 feet as long as I've been hunting. If it was I wouldn't be able to hunt on about 1/2 my 100 acre farm:(

I believe the 500 ft rule pertains to the safety zone for hunting around buildings. Have hunted close to the road many times, but I think the written rule is 50 feet from any roadway.
