I've seen shows about "The Sanctuary" in MI. They have some ridiculous deer. The manager of that property said that all the deer on their property are MI deer. All they did was put up a fence, stop shooting little ones and made sure that the nutrition was available. They never added any genetics. http://www.sanctuary-ranch.com/background.html Their deer are huge and I'm sure well beyond what you find outside the fence even though they are genetically the same.

Age
Nutrition
Genetics

Those are the three keys to a bucks success. I do not buy that genetics are overrated. If any of these aspects are overrate, it is nutrition. If a buck has great genes and enough age, he'll get big no matter where he is or what he has to eat. But nutrition can take him to the next level. Deuce put on 30-40" from 3.5 to 4.5. He obviously had the age and genes. But how much good did all the corn and apples do him last winter, and the minerals this summer along with my food plots? No one can be sure, but I would like to think it contributed to his explosion. But nothing can replace age and genetics in my book...

Genetics is the foundation, problem is marketers can't sell you anything to improve the genetics of wild deer.

Selling deer and exotic animals (game farming) has been going on for a long time. I worked at an animal auction/farm (here in Ohio) for a few years in the 80's. People came from all over the country. Lots of "trophy" whitetail, sitka, fallow, red, mule and blactail bucks came through there...elk, pronghorn, moose...saw some go for 10K and more back then. Doll rams, oudad, bison, ostrich, emus, all kind of exotic pigs.

Lions and tigers and bears oh my...:D

You can take any deer of any age from any gene pool and feed it properly and have a healthy deer. If you take away nutrition from deer, or anything for that matter, it will not be at optimal health no matter the age or bloodline. Nutrition is an obvious #1 in my book.

They did a special on Michael Phelps during the olympics... The guy eats thousands and thousands of calories every day. Most all of it is absolute junk. Yet he's the fastest swimmer on the planet. He's not a deer but I still have to put genetics #1. You got to have something to work with. Nutrition can enhance but nature (genetics) does the heavy lifting. :bouncy:

The reason they are worth that kind of money is because of their genetics, not any buck can produce antlers like that. The website from Creams thread on high fences has straws of semen for sale from the big bucks, I'd love to see what those sell for. I have a neighbor that raises a few deer, he's never raised one that be much bigger then BBBC minimum. They are well fed, the guy owns a feed mill.
