i was just wondering where qdm stands on proper feeding of animals when it comes to spreading diseases like cwd...i know the odnr an biologists say not to pile it or feed from troughs...i would like to know the view of the qdm group...i believe there is some members here that belong to this group...i know no one wants cwd in ohio ...maybe theres info out there that can be posted...thanks:biggrin: :D

From my research, supplemental feeding in the winter months (Nov-Feb) is beneficial especially to the young deer that were born that spring. I could especially see supplemental feeding beneficial in areas with little to no crop fields, such as Southern Ohio. I begin supplemental feeding after I shoot my fall turkey for the year. Last Saturday I began my supplental feeding program on my property. I use the standby corn and alfalfa pellets. My food plots are usually bare by the end of December. I have yet to find any dead deer on my property. The deer seem to really like the feed because I go through 300lbs in about two weeks. I stop my feeding program in late Feb/early March. In the spring I begin my mineral licks.

i'm not sure how the odnr agrees with feeding deer thru the winter but i think they are against it...thats not sayin theyre right tha bein the case but they do have biologists for their opinions...unbiased biologists too i must point out...but again that doan mean theyre right...i know we have some that are very educated on this on the forum and it would be great to hear their advise on proper feeding and safe feeding to prevent outbreaks of disease in deer especially on deer managed properties...none of us want to see an outbreak of somethang that could put our herd in jeopardy because of poor deer management...especially when we have forums like this that can teach proper methods...

Winter wheat is a very important food source for whitetail deer in and around our climate. Leaving standing corn and beans up is also good they both provide a food source, and the corn will provide cover as well.

That's a good program if you can do it. The deer have to browse for the food. I would add that alphalfa hay fields provide a winter food source if not cut too low in September.
In the winter months, deer herd up near food sources and if you just pile the food, you bring a lot of intimate contact between a lot of deer. From what I know and have read, this is discouraged.

piling corn or anythang is NOT good for the deer herd...an when they have been told of this its obvious to me that theyre not trying to help the herd...now thats what i have read on the cwd sites an qdm sites...maybe these people doin it doan believe me...i've even posted links to the pros in the know...i just wish our guys on here that know how to do it correctly would step up to the plate...i kinda thought thats why the deer management forums were created...theres nothin more that gits me is these pics showin deer eatin from a pile of corn...

Piles of deer feed is a mistake!!!!!!!!!!! Your deer are more apt to get diseased and its a predator buffet in the spring. Are you wanting to hunt or just take pics?

It sounds to like coon is trying to start an argument. How is it suggested that people feed in the winter? what is the proper way? should I take a broad cast spreader though the woods. LOL I'm just teasing. Truly the land has a caring capacity and when its out of wak then the herd suffers. If people need to feed to help The young deer. Let it suffer. On the other hand since we all want big deer and that's what is cool lets feed them till they are fat.
What is right I don't know.
Where is the CWD I thought it was still in the west I havn't stayed on top of it lately.

Unless I am mistaken, feeding the deer does not cause CWD, nor does deer eating from piles of feed. The piles of feed cause the deer to be closer together, raise the chances of them swapping spit. So unless a healthy deer is swapping said spit with a CWd infected deer, their is not a problem. But I may be wrong. Maybe just eating from a "pile" does cause disease.. lol
Deer feed together in corn and bean fields all the time....eating off the same stalks and ears.
Bait piles are awesome for this time of year for shooting that last minute buck or doe.
Try it!! You"ll like it!!

I seen a moma doe licking 2 fawns in the face last October.. They were all in a herd of 20-25 deer 10 momma does and fawns.. How’s that for spreading CWD.

Those large harems of does do it anyway.. I watched them for 20 min poking their snoots in the leaves looking for acorns, the same spot 1 deer was poking around 3 deer probably went through it just min later. I have watched the eating in fields almost nose to nose.. I have seen them rub noses looking at each other.. What about bucks when they fight that’s nose to nose with tremendous amounts of breath flying.. What about what I said earlier where mama doe is licking her fawn in the face. and the fawn in turn licks another fawn in the harem when playing... There is just way too much contact to only blame a corn pile.

My main problem with piling up corn, is the deer will stand and eat in the same position for a long time. If that deer didn't approach the corn in a shooting position, it can be a long wait! I like to broadcast it around, and spread the deer out.
Yes, I took the bait, and got sucked into this one, lol!
