MYTOPO.COM

Great site. You can view the maps free or buy them and have them send you hard copy.

You can't go wrong with MSN's live maps or Google Earth.

National Geographic Topo Map program is what I use. I think I paid $70 for it but its user friendly and can be loaded on to handheld GPS units. Powerful Program

Besides the GPS capabilities what other advantages does a program like that have over the free satellite programs? Just curious.

try downloading ArcGIS Explorer or Google Earth... both are free and have various layers to choose from, including topos. MyTopo is ok, so is Terra Server... but nothing special i dont think.

ArcGIS Explorer has great detail... more than most of the free ones. ArcGIS and Google Earth both let you move the axis of the map, as well as change the viewing angle... very cool i think. prolly what i like most about ArcGIS is the ability to outline an area and it will tell you the size... in acres, hectares, square feet, whatever units you choose. This is very helpful when scouting new areas, or mapping out food plots on a property.

forgot to mention, after downloading ArcGIS, it usually tells you that your computer doesnt have a certain "codec" that is required to run the program. just go to Microsoft's website and type the name of the codec in a search and it will direct you to the free download of the codec pack. i think service pack 2 or 3 has the codec in it too.
