Anybody having any luck finding grouse or quail. I haven't been out in Ohio much yet . How about woodcock? Are the flights through yet?

I've been seeing and hearing woodcock for about 3 weeks now. If I had to guess I'd say most of the flights are thru now...but I'm not a woodcock hunter...I usually see and hear them at dark while out bowhunting.

We saw a bunch of woodcock opening day of pheasant up here in NE Ohio. I'm betting they'll be few and far between after this front moves through.

i was out sunday and saw several woodcock in several different places. As for quail, have yet to see any this year but got in to some last year in fayette county and ross but they were not legal to hunt in those counties, at least i think they weren't. As for grouse i was flushing upwards of 40 a day and an average of around 30 a day for about a week long period. Then i drove back home 12 hours and tryed a few new spots in Scioto and saw none. I miss Michigan! But i tryed for grouse in ohio the first couple of weeks the season was open and there was still a lot of leafs on the trees. I did fairly well last year and have a few good spots but when i say firly well, i mean like three or four birds a day is good for me in ohio.

bmiller, I'm afraid you're right. It's too bad that it is that way too. I wish the DNR would do something to help grouse, rabbit and other small game in the state. The DNR's response to the dwindling grouse numbers is habitat loss. I live and hunt in Athens County (and surrounding counties) and know that there is grouse habitat here, but very few birds. Rabbit numbers are also down and there is plenty of habitat for them. It seem that the DNR is only interested in deer, turkey, and Lake Eire. I guess that's where they get there money from.

Quail, I have been out 3 times thus far, first trip had a brood of 4 pointed, never shot. Last 2 trips were Scioto trails and Cooper hollow both areas I was in had perfect habitat and Cooper Hollow is all perfect habitat, 2 guys and 2 dogs and we went flushless! Too early at this point to call the season a wash, I will get real serious about it in late December.
