 what is the best way to skin a Squirrel ?
do you cut back at the tail, or on the
middle of the back? and pull the skin off

I make a cut underneath the base of the tail, step on it, and pull from here. I tried once making a cut at the middle of the back like a rabbit. NOT a good idea. Their skin is much too tuff to tear with your hands.

The tail thing is about the same as I do. I just skin the hind legs to the tail then step and pull! Works great and be sur eto do this in the field. Give the woods time to calm down. If I only had a dollar for everytime I had to stop skinning to shoot another rascal

I do the middle of the back thing too. It ain't that bad if they are still warm, like any animal. An idea I got off of JCDFlint is to take pruners & nip off the paws.
I need more info on the tail way. You make a cut under the tail, step on the tail(?) & then pull what?

Wow, I thought I was going to tear the squirrel in two when I tried cutting the skin across the back. Guess I didn't try hard enough. Well, here's how I was taught. Hold the squirrel by the base of the tail, upside down. Sort of like holding a bass by the lip. Take a knife and make a cut near or through the vent. Continue through the tail bone until you see the white skin on the back side. Place it on the ground and step where you just cut. Hold it tight and pull up on the back legs. The back skin will pull off as you go. When it gets up toward the front legs, the back skin will separate from the belly skin, leaving a v-shape in the center of the chest. Take a hold of the tip of the v, and continue on. As you pull, the original piece will peel off clear up to the head, and the rear part will peel off until the paws of the rear feet. Take some snips and cut off the feet and head, and your done. It's very difficult to describe, but extremely easy to do. It takes about 1 minute to skin a grey squirrel, and basically no hair ends up on the meat. Fox squirrels can be a bit tougher, but as long as you don't rip the tail off, it goes pretty smooth.
