In a couple of weeks I am planing on buying a new ATV. I am tossed between the Polaris Magnum 330 4x4 or the Yamaha Big Bear 4x4. They both have their good points, and the price is about the same. The reason I started this post was to see if any of you own either bike, or you know someone who does. If you do, could you tell me what you like and dont like about them. thanks yall and happy hunting

Whats the deal with the "belts slipping" on the Polaris?? I have never heard of that problem. In their advertising brocher they claim to have "splicless belts" in the 2004 models.

Yea, some say that when you get in water or snow that the belt housing will fill up with water and cause the belt to slip. I can honestly say that it hasnt happend to me, And I ride some pretty tough country. We just got a Polaris 700 and man is that thing powerfull!!!!!! That twin cylinder is nice:D

I'd just be happy to have an ATV. If I get orders to Texas then I'll probably get one.

I work in one of the largest powersports dealerships around. im the head technician there and have been working on those two models you have asked about for some time now. i thought i might add an insight and my 2 cents here.
first off i would like to ask what you plan on doing on an everyday basis with these two quads?
the polaris is a good machine. the first thing about polaris themselves i like are the parts are cheap (not made cheap) and easy to get ahold of. the japanese quads are more expensive to maintain and parts sometimes can be a hassle. polaris makes a good product and i cant think of any one thing about any of there quads that has a problem or issue. i like there 4 wheel drive system and as far as the belt drives they dont slip dont worry about that yamaha uses them to as well as kawasaki they took there drive system in the newer quads from polaris. and that quad is drive shaft anyway so if you like the polaris get it . its a good quad
the yamaha is also a good quad. i have never come across a problem with it either working on them. almost all services or abused quads. i will tell you that yamaha has the best customer satisfaction of both manufactures. i think the yamaha versus the polaris the polaris is the better rig. if you have any questions about them specifically you can email me and ill try to help you out maybe even on the purchase price.

Thanks Madriver for all the very, very useful info!! The answer to your question is that whatever one I chose it will not see a whole lot of hard driving. I live in town and I would just use it during huntin season and on the weekends to trail ride. I am not a hard a&& rider and like to take things slow and easy (Tread Lightly). and as for prices, heck yea, give me as much info as you can!! I love to shop around and want the best price. Again thanks for your help, thats why I started this thread!!

SRN,
Since your interest is strictly trail riding either the Polaris or the Yamaha would suit your needs. If you are going to do some serious "farm" work like planting foodplots etc. I'd go Yamaha and never look back!
I am an ATV foodplot implement dealer and have been for about 3 years now. Our equipment is heavy and rugged, it takes a 400cc+ 4X4 ATV to get the job done on these hard clay soils here in Ohio. I've been using Yamaha ATV's all my life......(started with a Banshee when all I did was trail ride & race).......currently I'm using a Grizzly 660 and it's a beast. Never have I had a failure with a Yamaha pulling this 700 lb implement even in rock hard soil. She gets a little hot when its 95+ and I'm beating the heck out of it but she keeps truckin. Since the 80's I've owned Banshee's, Blasters, Warriors, Wolverines, Kodiaks & Grizzly's and have to say Yamaha has been leading the ATV world for a long, long time!
The manufacturer of our ATV implements I sell uses Polaris ATV religiously and this past Monday their service guy told me they were looking at other ATV's becuase they keep breaking axles on the new Polaris units. They are currently testing the new model with the dump bed, can't recall the actual model name?!?! However, I know over the last couple of years these guys are routinely having breakdowns with ALL of their Polaris ATV's but keep in mind these guys use'em like tractors!
I know several guys who have purchased Polaris Sportsman ATV's, in fact my brother-in-law was one of them and sold them shortly after buying and went to Yamaha. I had the chance to have both the Polaris 400 Sportsman HO and Yamaha 400 Kodiak in my barn for about 2 months in 2001 and tested them both side by side as did several other people and everyone chose the Kodiak over the Sportsman everytime.
Good luck with your decision!
BTW - Is there anything truely made in the USA anymore? I own both a John Deere & Kubota tractor and the John Deere has more Japanees parts than the Kubota!

Well I have made the decision and Polaris won!!! I bought a Magnum 330 4x4 with all the bell's and whistles. I love it!!!
