I'm a first year bow hunter and went out this weekend in Pike county and saw not a single deer!!! My buddies saw 2 in the early AM and that's very rare for the area, I'm told! ???? Does this 70degree weather push back the rut and what happens then???

Thanks in advance

It doesnt push back the Rut, the deer are just more active at night when its cooler. The rut takes place the same general time frame every year, its just more intense some years than others.

So the weather just limits the action during the day??

Exactly...stuff is still happening...the warm weather just supresses the daytime movement.

Try mating in a hot room with a heavy fur coat on. See how they feel.

Bartruff:

I hunt in Pike county. I just returned home from my camp and seen a crap load of activity over teh last 2-3 days.

IN my area of Pike the acorns are "spotty" go find you some oaks (white oaks) that produced acorns this year and get on them, all of our deer are in the oaks right now (bucks included).

We hunt (2 of us) 4 different farms and have seen chasing on all of them by young bucks. I had a mature buck this morning (140" 10pt) chasing a doe, had him within 40 yards or so but the doe would not cooperate and bolted over the hill with him going after her.

Stick with it, the temps will drop and you'll see some deer. I have been seeing all of my deer during the 1st hour of the morning and the last hour of the evening. I'm not a fan of hunting a water pattern, but Pike cnty is bone dry in most places, hopefully there is a pond on the farm you are hunting, in my area we have several ponds and the deer are relating to them heavily so if oyu have a pond with Oaks close then spend a day hunting there and you'll see some deer.

I went out this evening and didn't see a thing, besides squirrels. I think the hot weather is definately affecting the deers daytime movement. I am hoping that i will have better luck in the morning. Maybe the cooler morning temperatures will get them moving. All-in-all it's been really slow this year for me, im just not seeing the deer numbers that i normally do. Hope others are seeing more movement than me!!!!!!!!

oldhat- you are on the money. I saw deer today at 4:30..

two does bolted past my stand. i didnt have enough time to get the bow off the hanger to shoot them but I grabbed it and stood up. Sure enough a young 2 year old was following close behind. He chased them around for a couple of minutes and then went down to get a drink from the pond!

I would say combining water sources with fresh sign would be a great spot to be!
