I know someone that shot a 160 class deer this weekend. The deer was hit forward and they could not find the deer. He said they tracked the deer for almost 1/2 mile before blood dried up. He said that the last three spots of blood, were at scrapes he stopped to freshen! How nuts is that???

That is freaking nuts!
I must say, having that happen would testical the mettle of any hunter.

I don't understand how there's that many hunters who can say a deer is 140 class, or 160 class, etc..
If I could identify a deer that closely, I think i could have my shot pinpointed as close as I can indentify the deer.

He said it was identical to the rack they picked up this winter. Which scored 160" and change...

Nothing that big but I've killed several deer here in NC that continued to run their scrape lines after the shot. One even fell out in the scrape. :D

Perhaps they had trail cam pics of the deer that gave them the opportunity to assess it. I think a lot of it has to do with experience and days in the field, along with seeing a lot of bucks and being able to get thier actual score. Not saying that I am "experienced" but I have been able to judge deer pretty accurately. With me, if I see a buck of a particular size I remember what it scored then it jsut stays with me. With the buck I shot friday I had a pretty good idea what it scored. I even told jessie a while back that I thoguht he would be rt at 150. He ended up scoring at 152 gross and 147 net.

Its not really that hard, to field judge an animal.
But him stopping to freshen up scrapes hopefully means, he lived and he can get another shot at him.

I got the story direct from the source last night and I was even more amazed. He said he thought the shot was in front of the shoulder and in the neck. He missed the wind-pipe and the jugular and just hit meat. After the shot, the buck ran 30 yards and stopped and he saw the buck pull the arrow out of his neck and then keep going. The buck never stopped to bed down, he just started working his scrape line.
Crazy stuff...
