Is anyone seeing any rut activity in the Athens area ? I have been hunting for 3 days now and I have seen nothing as far as chasing of crusing. Seems like all the deer have on there mind is eating and hiding with no loving on the side :tsk:

There's no deer in athens county, that's your problem...
I hunted every day from 10/25-10/31, and didn't see a single buck dogging a doe. Even had a couple young bucks come cruising together under my stand Thursday morning...
BTW, I'm hunting on the border of the Athens/Washington County line...

I sat out all day long and saw a spike sniffing around.. a doe and two dogs, pursuing that doe.
No rut activity yet..

The only reason you saw those deer is because those dogs ran them into Athens County from Washington County...

I had a 115ish 8-point chase a doe by me in Athens Cty. 2 weeks ago tomorrow, but it was nothing serious, and she wasn't interested. Since then, the most rut activity I've seen was a spike that was cruising.
In the past few years, I've definitely seen SOME rut activity in Athens Cty. by this time, but the best has been between about November 15 and Thanksgiving. Seems to be a little behind schedule this year, though.

I'm Hunting in Athens and have not seen any serious rutting activity yet. Were still a good week away in my opinion before anything changes. Next weekened should be great if the weather dips down like its supposed to.

I'm going down to my property in Vinton Thursday-Sunday this week. Hopefully they are starting up by then.

We have seen a few 1.5's and 2.5's interested, but that's it. I think we're still a week or so away from it getting really good, at least from what I have been seeing.

Where I hunt in Athens the deer numbers are ridiculous. Could it be that there are so many deer, bucks don't have to make much of an effort to have a full plate, and therefore you do not see much rut activity?

That has not been my experience at all. Last year, the afternoon I killed my buck during the rut, I saw 2 different does, one being chased by 2 bucks (one of them I killed) and one being chased by 3!

I think it's just a little early yet. Next week should see more action. Every weather report I've looked at says that there is a front due on Friday and the temps following should be 50's and 30's for the next days following it. I had a buck circle me on Friday, grunting at every step, looking for the intruder in his space [me and my grunt tube] which is getting close to rut behavior. This is just my opinion. I've got a trip planned for the Athen's area starting Saturday and running throught the end of next week. I think things are looking promising for then. New Guy
Try finding a water source, I've been seeing alot of deer on my evening hunts by hunting around a pond.
