View Full Version : Ever turned in a Poacher

Have any of you ever turned in a poacher? Ive read the posts bout the amish, but this situation is a little different for two reasons. You see it appears that I have stumbled upon a TROPHY POACHER.
You see I reside in a county where there is as much pavement as greenspace. And with that mix of strip malls and fields, hunting is not permitted. The result, duh, really big bucks. In any given night I can see 5-6 big bucks. Anyway getting back to my story, there is one place that consists of roughly 300- 700 acres, and frankly Ive observed many bucks 180+, just grazing. In fact I would not be suprised if a ohio record lived there.
Anyway my friend and I shed hunted the area just after the thaw and we found nothing, (and yes we are experienced shed hunters.) As if that was not disappointing enough, we found several ground blinds and one treestand. In addition to the stand, this @$$&*!# had most of his equip back there already. the knife I found was all fatted up from a gut job.
Now here's my problem, Ive tried to TIP once before but nobody took me seriously. I called the police and DNR but they seemed skeptical, and Im sure nothing ever came of it. I realize I was young, but I know that when someone is still hunting in a park, its poaching......right. So that incident has left a bad taste in my mouth.
Secondly the ODNR has a lot of other things to worry about in my county. The "ROOKIE" wildlife officer has to patrol many areas that are of more commercial value to the county. I just dont want this to be swept under the rug, I just want them to suprise the jerk in his treestand.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say he, they, whoever does not have permission to hunt on this property. forgive me for not telling who exactly owns it but it is comprised of a city or two and private owners. If u saw this area and I told u that someone hunts it, 9 times out of ten most would ask, LEGALLY? I would not have written such an ehausting post if i hadnt covered every possible reason of why an individual would be allowed to hunt there. Secondly even if there is a 10% chance that they are allowed, shouldnt I leave that up to the DNR to figure that out?

I LIVE IN A CENTRAL OHIO TOWN, AND I HAVE HAD THE COUNTY GAME WARDEN GIVE ME A VERBAL "OK" TO HUNT A BIG STRIP OF CITY PROPERTY THAT RUNS BY THE RIVER. HE TOLD ME TO JUST USE MY BOW AND DONT MAKE IT OBVIOUS WHAT I WAS DOING.

IF THE HUNTERS YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT ARE TAGGING IN THE DEER THEY KILL, THEN IN MY BOOK IT IS OK. TECHNICALY IT IS POACHING BUT WHEN YOU ARE FORCED TO LIVE IN THE F-ING CITY AND THE DEER HEARD IN THE AREA IS OVERPOPULATED AS YOU SAY THEN I SAY WHATS THE BIG DEAL. BUT THAT IS JUST MY OPINION AND I'M SURE I AM IN THE MINORITY ON THE SUBJECT.

Your opinion is fine, its America right. I appreciate u taking the time to comment.

let me ask you or anybody who can answer this, what kind of power does a wildlife officer have versus a policeman / women enforcing the laws and ordinances of that city. ie if a wildlife officer gives permission verbally or however, to hunt on land that is in a city that has restrictions on hunting, discharging a firearm (many cities classify archery equip as a firearm, but dont ask me why) , or whatever, What is a cop or a judge going to say to you when the cop is in the right place at the right time?

THAT IS A GOOD QUESTION. I SUPPOSE A DEPUTY HAS JUST AS MUCH JURISTICTION AS A WILDLIFE OFFICER. WHAT I'M TRYIN TO SAY IS THAT IF THE VIOLATION FALLS IN THE OFFICERS JURITICTION (CITY DEPUTY, COUNTY DEPUTY, GAME WARDEN) THEN THEY ALL 3 COULD BUST YA. BUT IN MY INSTANCE A SHERIFFS DEPUTY LIVES JUST A STONES THROW FROM WHERE I ENTER THE WOODS AND I CAUGHT HIM COMMIN OUT OF THE WOODS WITH HIS BOW ABOUT THE THIRD TIME I HUNTED THERE. WE TALKED FOR ABOUT A HALF HOUR AND HE SAID HIM AND HIS SON HAD ALREADY KILLED 2 NICE DOE'S. HE TAGED THEM LEAGLY SO LIKE I SAID IN MY BOOK NEITHER HIM OR I WAS POACHING.

XX78,

No need to get snooty. I asked a question a simple yes or no would have been fine. If you want to pick a fight then go to bowsite.com. You get your fill there.

I've got a buddy that is a gamewarden. Although he does not reside over the county that I focus my hunting in, he has been a big help on giving me the proper info and meethod od turning in a poacher(s). He said the "TIP" doesn't work that well. Said that a phone call will instead get better results. If you phone, they "have to follow up" on the call, where as the "TIP" usually doesn't get much response.

So, after dealing w/4 wheelers, paochers, etc. and turning this stuff into "TIP", I made a call. THe next day I go bowhunting and guess who is there, yep the warden.

Make the call. Tell me what county you are in and possibly my "buddy" is over that county. IF not, and you deem it a serious problem, then he could probably make a phone call for you and get something done about it.

Now, on the "city limits" thing. Been teaching a kid how to hunt. His grandfather has about 40 acres of woods and wanted me to go over there and help him on learning how to hunt it. Well, it was 40 acres of never-hunted in 50 years and right on the edge of a city of 35K people....well, there are some thumpers in there no-doubt, but I warned the kid about "city limit" hunting and that he should not hunt it. He contacted the Wildlife Officer over that district and the guy came out, talked to him and told him something to the tune of :

"Ah, the property is within city limits but, go ahead and hunt it".

I will say that from my perspective and what was told to me, is that the bordering land is outside of the city limits and this land that he wanted to hunt was possibly half-in/half out of city limits.

So the kid is hunting it, hasn't been that successful yet, but boy I'd like to get in there for about 2 or 3 days.....some major deer action going on.

Hope this helped.

TF, & all

Wasnt intending to be snooty just trying to provide more background to situation. For some more info the land that i was speaking (the 300-700 acres) is broken into smaller tracts of land by streets freway, and private corporations. Although this doesnt affect the adapted whitetails' activities much it will hopefully shed some light on the area. It would be equally easy for a home owner on his or her adjoining 1/4 acre lot or a worker down the road at one of the many industrial complexes to slip into the sanctuary undetected.

Thanks for the info on the TIP, like I said i didnt have much luck when i used a few years back.

the old saying is true if you want something done right u have to do it yourself.

I hunt some wood lots in the Columbus metro area that are in the burb limits. I have written permission from the developer and the city pd know who I am and what I am doing.......the neighbors really hassled me three years ago....but the deer are really starting to eat up there expensive landscaping......last fall it was "we how are you doing and seeing anything." All that landscaping makes a tasty deer.

If it was taken in season, tagged there is not much you can do. short of discharging a weapon in the city limits or trespassing.
