I have a Horton and a Tenpoint... Horton is a great shooting bow but I went with then Tenpoint b/c it makes it easier on me.. the Accudraw on the tenpoint is great. Horton I got to carry more stuff into the field just to cock it back... But I love both... my girl is dead on with my Horton.. so I'm giving it to her to use.

When I had the crossbow it was horton, but thats because I got it for free. Good crossbows though. If I had to pick one it would be horton or 10 point.

I have a crossbow (horton) I like to use it when I am hunting on the ground (less movement). I have a compound that I also enjoy hunting with. Sometimes I just flip a coin before I leave the house as to which one I am going to use that day. Next year I think I will be using the compound more, am teaching my 9 year old how to hunt with the crossbow.

i agree the Horton's. I have the TeamReal Tree 175 and I just shot a doe at 48 yards. That was awsome. I have always been frusturated with deer staying in the field out around 40-70 yards. Now they are not safe. my dad use's a Tenpoint and that is what I have in the picture but I am not really impressed except with there service here in Porrtage County. My wife is using a real old Horton as well and is deadly with it.
Awsome we have our own forum

well i knew id be different i have a browning boss. its gotta be at least 8-10 yrs old and i still can take 40-50 yrd shots easily - been a good crossbow. when i bought it was 300.00 back then an was top of the line. ive maintained it myself and have never had a problem with it. now if i do need a part i dont know were id go to get it fixed. now if i do ever have to replace it i would buy a horton.my son has one and its alot lighter than mine and i like the way it feels and shoots.

I bought a Barnett 400 Quad AVI last year and love it. I am a research guy and spent 2 months looking into the different brands. I went and shot the Hortons, Ten Points and then the Barnett. Dollar for Dollar the Barnett SEEMED to be the best investment.
The quality of the bow surpasses most of the Hortons that I've looked at and comes in close to the Ten Point (In my opinion). It's super accurate and comes with multiple (Red Dot and Trad) scope packages. You can shoot 35 yards, tightly grouped with it all day long. Assuming you don't run out of gas trying to load the darn thing.
If I had to do it again, I would have purchased the Horton because everyone works on them.
I also have a Browning and have the same issue as an ealier poster about having maintenance done.
On the flip side, many of the shops are starting to carry the Barnett line so the maintenance problem might be a non issue.
Started with a Horton and am now using the Ten Point. Like the Ten Point better.

they have a bow jamboree memorial day and labor day weekends, they have an assortmant of animals , mostly rams and hogs and deer, but he throws in the occasional elk, red stag, emu , he has 3 sides a , b ,c side and has a prize animal in each side , its a 70 % kill ratio i have some pics i can send to your email if ya want me to , usual animals are hogs , sitka deer , fallow deer, rams ( four horn , black hawaii , corsican ) whitetail deer , the prize animal one year was a 700 pound boar for the side we were on , but its all bow no guns allowed, its $250 per hunt , which is usually over by noon

I own an Excalibur Exocet, shoots flat and long. Took a buck last year at 38 yds. Only problem, very loud to shoot. My buddy has a Horton, nice and quiet. I may trade up next year.

I shoot a parker, love the trigger and is shoots fast. However my father has an excalibur and I actually find it to be very quiet, plus with the recurve limbs theres no cables or cams to worry about just carry an extra string. The drawback is there width they are wider than most.

OHBOW76, your dead on about the trigger pull and the width of the bow takes a little getting used to.. What does your father use to quiet the twang of the string. I have a couple of rubber thingies on mine.

Stingray,
He has a couple string leeches on there, but otherwise I dont think its any louder than other crossbows its just that the noise is different. Instead of a crack you hear a twang. I have never heard any crossbow shoot quieter then a compound, its just the nature of the beast.

I have a Horton and this is my first year using it I can get 1-2 inch groups at thirty yards all day long with the stock pinsight. It is definitly a true shooting xbow. I was gonna buy an excaliber but decided not to mainly b/c of the price I was wondering if they were worth the the extra money?
stingray
10-31-2008, 10:27 AM
Ohbow,
thanks for the input. I actually have the same leeches. This is my second year with the xbow, last year took my first deer in Ohio a nice little basket 9 pointer. He went all of 5 yds and crumbled up.
messageinblood:
I honestly can't answer that, the Excalibur is my first xbow. I know the Horton's are way popular and easier to hump thru the woods. The excalibur shoots flat, straight and fast but is also a pain to carry thru the woods, when uncocked the limbs are something like 30" or so from tip to tip.

The year that I went looking for xbows all of the Hortons, which I wanted , were recalled. That shook my confidence in them. I tried the 10 Point at Buckeye Sports. They were $1000.00 then and the triggers abolutely sucked on the ones that I tried, lots of creep. I thought no way will I pay that price for that kind of performance. I went to Cabela's and tried a Parker. Excellent trigger, good looks, good performance at half the price. It went home with me. Took four deer with it, four pass throughs using Spitfire mech broad heads.

Horton Legend:)
Stingray, don't get a horton, you would be trading down.. I went from a horton to a ten point to a excalibur. I have the older 200lb version, the exomag. The year before last, I went and got the varizone scope and love it! The day I sighted it in, sighted it in at 20 yards with a broadhead, stepped back to 30 and watched as the broadhead laned in the same hole it had made at 20.. I chonographed it out at buckey with my thunderhead 100's, and it was around 320fps, not as good as some of the newer stuff, but plenty fast. It may be a little loud, but I have shot several bucks with it, including my big one last year at about 26 yards, and a turkey at 25, and neither "jumped" the string. Bought mine new at a place near medina for around $375. Been happy ever since..

I've got a Ten Point Slider and just love it! But I don't have anything to compare it to. The guys at Buckeye Outdoor put a Tasco Red dot scope on it. Two shots at the store and I was center bowl. Came home sighted it in at 20 yards after a couple more shots and split an arrow.
When I got it out this fall...shot dead center at 20 yards on my first shot. My second was a double lung shot on a doe at 18 yards.
It is noisy though, and not a lot you can do about it.

I'm in my thirty's and when I was 10 I started out with an old Wamo cross bow (old school) It was terrible. Then I got one of the first Hotons Had the open stock 150lb. xbow that was around 1989 or 1990 Still use it on ocations. Now I shot an older 150lb explore. No need for a new one they both shot fine and kill lots of deer.
I've shot them all they all shot petty good but part repirs are every where for hortons. Thats the best part about it, and its quiet.
Thats my two cents worth.

This year I bought my first crossbow- Ten Point Pro Elite. It is a tack driver. My only complaint is the safety click is way too loud....

I have a bran new horton hunter hd 175. I love it. I got my ten point with it this year(The pic is on the site). I have the horton scope with the graduation lines. I like that more than the red dot, but that is just a matter of opinion, but i highly recomend any horton.

I just cant see spending $700 to $1000 on a crossbow, and certainly not a compound. I have had 3 horton hunters, and more than once, something went wrong and dropped one out of a treestand, they never broke.
just because you spend more money doesnt mean you are a better hunter..
