i saw a buck opening day that seemed alot darker then any deer ive seen in the past. i was wondering what changes their color. i believe it has something to do with their food source. just wondering

I to saw a spike buck that almost looked black in color. I don't ever recall seeing a deer that was this dark. I am not sure what causes this but am very interested in seeing this deer again.

were these deer whats called melanistic (sp?). it's like albino deer only black in color.

there are smaller deer being found in ohio that is close to black,i doan know if this is the sitka for sure or not but i do know there was some kilt in se ohio a few yrs. back...one was pictured in the newspaper...i believe they sed they prolly escaped from a canned hunting operation...:biggrin:

Man Skinner I'm in North Central Ohio. You think they would have traveled that far? Or do you think they might be gettin mixed up in the gene pool?

i believe they sed they will breed with reg. whitetail...i think they are foun now in most of ohio...maybe odnr knows something...this was at least 5 yrs. back i red bout it...:Dtheyre lots smaller than a whitetail...

If you are hunting in Lake county it was probably a Sika Deer. There are actually quite a few in Lake County. I have taken 4 of them and have seen a few trophy 8 point Sikas running around. If they are in fact Sikas and you shoot one you do not have to tag them. They are not native to Ohio & the ODNR wants them gone.

well the thing is it was a pretty big bodied deer. i couldnt tell how many points but it prob. atleast an 8 pt. plus i live in vermilion on the lake so its pretty far north for them to travel.

there is whitetail thats completely black,xtremely rare...i believe they hqave been seen in ohio an one was kilt in texas i believe by a woman maybe 10 yrs. ago,called melanistic......there was pics maybe on this site too...big deer big rack...think 8 point:rolleyes:there are 5 colorations...reg. brown,piebald,albino,white,dark brown or black,the rarest...google this...WOMAN KILLS BLACK DEER IN TEXAS:dizzy:

Man HeartLunger great article thanks for the link. I will definitley be keeping my eyes open for this. Now that I know a little moree about this. Man would that be cool!!! My sons first bow kill a mela???? how ever you spell or say it. Man that would be awesome!!!:yikes: I will keep you guys posted to what I find out. I know in the past history of this farm the smaller bucks always seem to stick around. We will see what happens.

Yes they are smaller than a whitetail. They are actually a Japanese elk. Very cool animal, sneakier and better tasting than a whitetail IMO.

Looks like it's winter coat is starting to come in IMO. Where at are you in Mohican? I have a camper on wally road and am down there quite a bit. I hunt the state forest down there.
