I have been searching for a used ATV. I've been seeing a few and wasn't sure how things work with the paperwork. Some people do not have titles which is a little scary for me. Makes me think they may have been stolen. They state they can write a bill of sale to me. With that being the case what do I do with a bill of sale to make sure I can get the bike registered/titled correctly in my name as the legal owner? Or does it even matter? I've been meaning ot call the BMV but haven't had time when they are open. I appreciate any help.

Under Ohio Law, they need to get it titled before they sell it to you. If you buy it and take that bill of sale into the title agency, they will tell you that the original owner needs to get it titled and transfer it to you.

While I don't recommend this, any pre 2000 atv did not come from the manufacturer with a title. You could go into the title agency and claim you bought it before they titled them and don't have any paperwork to prove when and who you bought it from. You will need to have a VIN inspection done prior to getting it titled.

For your own good, I wouldn't buy one that wasn't titled. That ensures that you do not get one that is a little on the hot side. If they won't get it titled, move on. There's a ton of them on the market.

I WORK AT AN ATV DEALORSHIP YOU REALLY DON'T NEED A TITLE. A BILL OF SALE WILL WORK BUT BEFOR YOU HAND OVER ANY CASH. I WOULD ASK THE SELLER FOR THE VIN NUMBER AND CALL YOUR LOCAL DEALOR AND HAVE THEM RUN THE VIN NUMBER TO MAKE SURE IT'S NOT STOLEN FIRST.

I disagree:

TITLING OF APV’s AND OFF-HIGHWAY MOTORCYCLES
All dealer sales of APV’s and off-highway motorcycles are required to be titled in the purchasers name. Any Ohio resident that purchases a APV or off-highway motorcycle and intends to apply for registration to use the vehicle on Federal, State or County parklands must already have an Ohio title prior to applying for registration. As of October 1, 2005 House Bill 66 states in part "Anyone wishing to sell an APV must have a Certifi cate of Title and assign it to a new owner.” Contact your local Clerk of Courts title offi ce for further information.

Interesting info. I'm pretty sure I have a title for my ATV as I bought it new. I just need to look and make sure as it will be for sale if I locate the right UTV.

Star1Pup - If memory serves me correctly. You may not have a title even if bought new. I believe the title law is fairly new. I do not remember exactly when dealerships started issuing titles so it could go either way for you. So if you start looking for it and can't find it anywhere that might be why.

The titling law went into affect July 1, 2000. I belive Star1Pup said his Arctic Cat is a 2004 model and thus he should have gotten a title at purchase.

I am developing an iPhone game, and am looking to buy a test device. Either an iPhone or an IPodTouch would be fine. Please let me know if you have one for sale, or know someone who does.
