25-06, fast and flat shooter. BTW, what is the min. legal cal. you can hunt with in Ky?

Pick the one that is really loud when you pull the trigger and it almost knocks you on your butt!!! :mischeif:

Remington or Browning 7mm thats what I would choose knocks them flat.

First, what part of Ky are you going to be hunting and second, why can't you use the typical 12 guage?I used to live in Richmond,Ky and that's all I ever needed.

I would suggest a commonly used caliber, like a 30-06 or .270WIN. It makes finding ammu8nition a lot easier if you get in a pinch and can't order. I own 2 Remington Model 700 BDL's, and although pricey, they are dang good rifles...even better when you lighten the trigger like I did with mine (yes, I broke the seal of death to adjust the trigger). As for a more economical choice, I know a few guys who have Savage guns with the AccuTrigger and swear by them.

I rifle hunt with a 30.06...even though you are going for deer... if you decide later to rifle hunt bigger game in the future ... it is a great rifle to do so.... I use a 120 grain when hunting white tail... it shoots great out of my browning... and doesn't tear the deer up bad with enough knock down power to drop them in thier tracks...Personally I'd go 30.06 or a .270

Both the .270 and ol' 06 will do well, but if you don't already have one look at one of the .300 magnums. I switched my father and grandpa from their old 06's to .300winmags (neither said they could handle the recoil of my .300 RUM) and they have never looked back. The magnums just seem to put em down faster (if they run after the shot you probably missed), and are alot better at shooting at extended distances. As far as the rifle, the Reminton 700 is a super action that has lots of aftermarket support and is a preferred action by gunsmiths to build affordable custom rifles. Also keep an eye out for Weatherby Vanguard Sub-moa rifles. They are marked with Sub-Moa on the triggerguard and are guaranteed to shoot under Moa(mine came with a .569 3 shot test group), they come in all of the calibers mentioned in the posts above(except my .300RUM), and can be found for around ~650 new.

Look at anything chambered in a 7mm-08, very mild recoil and more than enough for a deer. I stumbled on to one several years ago and now own 3 of them. I've killed several deer with the '08 here in WV.

I hunt in TN where there is a Rifle season also. I chose the 30.06 just in case I was every fortunate to hunt game that was a little larger I would not have to purchase another rifle.

308 is still a NATO round so you can get it for cheap. It is a good shooting round also I have a ruger 308 bull barrel and love it. Picked it up for a steal and it is usually the first one I pick up in a pinch. I have 6 other rifles from different companies and I gravitate towards that one everytime.

I have a few deer rifles from hunting in Michigan, 30.06, 25.06, 30-30, 7mm mag. If I am hunting open clearcuts I use the 25.06, I bought that gun for woodchucks with a heavy target barrel and its a biatch to cart around. My go to rifle is the Savage 7mm mag, lightweight(the recoil sucks), and fast onto the target. If I wanna get nostalgic I use my grandfathers 30.06 with the origanal peep sights. Guns are are like sex and money, you can never have too much or too many:shhh:

Don't forget the lever guns. Quick second shots and with the Horandy LeverEvolution ammo, those suckers can shoot out to 300 yards.
A big caliber like 30-30, .357, 40/70 govt, .35 Rem...you don't have to track the deer.
Looking like John Wayne: Priceless

My guess would be a .257 Roberts or a .260 Remington. I know a few people who swear by them.

My first rifle was (still have it, will never get rid of it) is a Savage accu trigger 30-06. This gun is accurate a 5hit and I LOVE it! I'm shooting 165g Remington and 180gr Remingtons thru it and HIGHLY recommend this gun.
I also picked up a great Remington 700 in 25-06 for my wife and this thing is FAST, FLAT, AND ACCURATE! If I remember right without going to the closet to look, she is shooting 115gr Remingtons thru it and it has plenty of knockdown for a white tail. It is also great for long range varmit hunting too if you ever want to do that.
Good luck....when in doubt, buy all guns and calibers that you see! That way you always have what ya need!:D
