I may of found a NICE hunting plot next to my house (about a 2min drive). It has a big open field with choke points and even a watering hole. I CONSTANTLY see deer feeding throughout the day.

The season starts in only 20 days. I am considering (if I get permission of course) putting up a permanent stand. Now I know the deer need to "get used to" new sights in their habitat.

Would about 2 weeks be enough time for the deer to get "used to" a permanent stand? Also, if it is "permanent", could I put it in the middle on a field or does it need to be hidden on the edge of trees or something?

They'll probly inspect everything you do after it gets dark as you build it and as long as they don't see nobody in it, they'll be fine with it. Just don't get in it until you're huntin.

For gun hunting I'd place it in a spot where I figure the most avenues in range and wrap it so they can't see movement. Bowhuntin is a lot different though. :bouncy:

funny yuh sed that nc,made me rmember somethin...not doubtin it but when i lived in tx...they would put a dummy:D in the tree stan so deer would git used to seein a person too in the stan an learn not to fear it...

i know what some are thinkin...but it wasnt me they put in the stan...:D
as for the question i like to have my stans up monthes in advance but have put stans up durin season many times an had deer under me the next day i used them...an look at climbers...many move around an use them in new found hot spots an this is a very sucessful tactic...very lil noise an disturbance is the key ...get in quick ,out quick...leave as lil scent as possible...an if possible do it when a big rain is comin...

Would a 4' x 4' stand be big enough for up to 2 people hunting at a time?

LOLOL....dude, she is so against hunting I don't EVER have to worry about her "tagging along". I have a friend who MIGHT come along every now and then. I was just curious if 4x4 was big enough or if I had to go to 4x5 or 4x6.

Make solo, meaning 1.You will have better luck not being busted because of movement.Tell your bud to get his own Stand IMO. Remember you will not be moving it if you make one and Nail it to a tree,And you will probibly will burn it out Quickly. For 60 or 70 bucks you can get a lock on stand and climbing sticks from Dicks.Move it when you want.

Gander Mountain has a 15ft metal ladder stand for $69.00. I too would go with something that you can move, especially later in the season when you stick out after all the leaves are gone.... just my 2 cents..

I think a cheap ladder stand would be a good idea as well. Coastie is in the right direction... You might want to consider buying a climbing stand from API or Summitt.

you never know wher eyou'll end up hunting and you can always take it with you when you want to move on.. if you have alot of state gamelands nere you, you'll be stuck not beign able to use a ladder stand, but you can hunt with a climber.

id go with a ladder stand if there is no trees good enough 4 a climbing tree stand , and put it in the best cover possible that allows u access to the watering hole and travel routes into and exit routes , i always take a range finder with me when putting up new stands to get ranges between target areas , then pick best spot 4 my stand

This isn't always obvious to hunters and I am just pointing it out - If you plan to build a permanent stand make absolutely SURE the landowner knows you will be driving nails into his trees:tsk: There is no faster way to tick off a landowner.

And also - pick a "trash" tree to build in - don't pick an oak, walnut, maple, etc.

Many landowners I have hunted on in the past would allow me to bowhunt, but they wanted no harm to the trees - even junk trees. Chain/ratchet strap on ladder stands will do the trick while obeying the wishes of the owner.
