View Full Version : 1st Annual Ohiosportsman.com vs. Michigansportsman.com Deer Hunting Team Contest
deerhunt45
09-02-2008, 01:14 PM
This will be a contest running along with the team contests that are ready to start on both sites.
Each site will have a team consisting of 25 members. That's one selected from each team on Michigan's site (they have 25 8 member teams).
The Ohiosportsman.com team will consist of one member from each team (18) and 7 at large picks.
What I need all of the teams to do is to select one of your team mates to represent the Ohiosportsman team. We will then have a nomination and voting thread from among the rest of the contest entrants for the at large picks.
When you decide your team mate for the Ohiosportsman team, please post them here and I will complete the roster.

Remember it's not being scored on total inches of antlers...
Indirectly, we have received a handicap in that the Michigan DNR has banned all baiting indefinitely :D

Team Ohiosportsman,
Most of us hunted together through our fun contest last season. The archives are there for anyone new interested in seeing the success that it was.
A lot of us know who put the points on the board last year. We also know those that put forth a lot of effort but just didn't quite score last year. We know who participated and had fun.
That said, we need to put the first team out there against Michigan (land of kill two bucks)...and let's get it on!
I wanted to add, as far as I know the scoring will be consistent with both site's rules...one buck entry and one doe entry. Same points as with our contest. Trying to keep it somewhat simple and have some fun!

Did you say they can shoot 2 bucks? That would give them an advantage in that they can choose which one to submit for the contest. They might shoot one and think they can do better and then shoot a 2nd buck and enter that one into the contest. Even so, I think we'll still beat them!

I am 6′ tall, 200 lbs. and I am an Ohio State graduate. The guy sitting next to me is 6′2″, 225 lbs., and he is an Ohio State graduate. The guy right next to him is 6′5″, 250lbs., and he is also an Ohio State graduate. Now, you still wanna tell me that joke?” The first guy says, “No, not if I’m going to have to explain it three times.”
A little boy and his mother were walking through an Ohio cemetery when they came upon a headstone that read: “Here lies an OSU graduate and a good man.” The little boy asked his mother, “Mommy, why did they bury two people in there?”
Did you hear that the Ohio State University library burned to the ground? All five books in the library were completely destroyed and the football team is really upset by the fire; they hadn’t colored in two of the books yet.

Trust me casscityalum, you'll have plenty of time to whine later. So you might want to save those tissues for AFTER the "contest". Here is what we have come up with so far.
Each site will have a team consisting of 25 members. That's one selected from each team on MS.com (one chosen from each team) and same for OS.com, plus 7 picks chosen from the pool of contest participants.
As for the scoring the following will apply:
-Each representative may enter 1 buck (no antlerless deer will be scored for the state vs state contest)
-The deer may be taken with any legal weapon during any season during the 2008 calendar year
-The deer may be culled for a larger one (Michigan)
-Points will be awarded by weapon + tines longer than 1". The weapon points will act as the 'base' points awarded depending upon what the hunter used to take their deer as follows: Gun or Crossbow=3 points / Compound Bow=4 points / Traditional Bow=5 points
-The photo of the deer will have to be submitted in the state vs state contest photo submission thread by January 3rd, 2008 for Michigan and February 1st for Ohio.
Additional details and directions will be posted closer to the start of the season, and once each teams has chosen their representative.

45, Even if Im signed up for Compound bow in our contest, I can use a gun killed deer for the MS vs OS contest but the gun will just be less points???
First of all, none of the rules are official yet. I am still negotiating with theredmission, who runs the contest over there. We are still tweaking. We should have them done and officially posted on both sites by the end of the week. He's been busy and so have I.
Thanks for the good question Buckslayer. I'll reserve answering it right at this moment. Keep in mind they are a two buck state, we are one. Their season ends Jan 3rd I believe, ours February 1st. So I agreed to them culling a buck as long as the contest ended at the end of our season, February 1st. Don't see how you could keep them from culling anyways.
Now I do think what you suggest would be a good rule for the OS vs MS contest. But for your buck to count in the OS contest it would have to be with your weapon you chose on entry. MS thinking behind the graduated point system is based on perceived difficulty. Not sure I agree with that but...tell me what you think guys.

Do not under-estimate Michigan. I have killed some very nice bucks in Mich. Michigan hunters do harvest some big deer that will rival any Ohio deer, especially southern Mich. The rest of Mich. does harvest the occasional freak. Now, I do see that they can cull a buck in this contest and I think that is a big advantage. I think Ohio will prevail, but do not assume there are no large bucks in Mich.because nothing could be further from truth.:tsk:

I think it should be 58 for the good guys. If sportsman34 got a nine point he didn't get his 3 points for crossbow.

I don't think Sportsman was able to prove the smaller points measured a full inch thus his buck was scored as a 6 pt taken with a crossbow. I believe the nice 10 pt Kaiser just put up will put some distance between the good guys and them from up north. :D

I was just on the Michigan site... well it won't allow me to post there ... not sure why .. but here's a fun fact.. it was asked ... (now note they can cull thier bucks to make sure they use the biggest of the 2)... and yet it was said they are allowed to hunt Ohio and it will count in the contest... that's the 2nd time i seen the michigan hunters cry about Ohio's deer lol... way to set them straight Hiller..

First of all, not many of them would know how to hunt Ohio whitetail...secondly they won't count in the contest scoring...I liked your post over there Hiller...good job and congrats again on an awesome buck.

LOL... if you all win atleast you can have some sort of satisfaction in knowing that you beat a group of guys with over three times the total inches of antler....:coco: Some of the main beams on those bucks of yours are questionable to being over 1"... can we get a measurement??

No doubt about that... I'm astonished to see the difference in buck quality from two states that are side by side, with pretty much the same style terrain and farmland, atleast in lower michigan... I never realized that...

A trophy is in the eye of the hunter. IF your happy then Im happy for you. Although, I will say this, there are jsut as many people in ohio that shoot young bucks. Although, one thing I have not noticed on the michigan sportsman site is any talk of QDM! The only thing I can think is that Michigan folk just are not as evolutionized as us ohioans! haha:coco:

If I were you I'd seriously consider moving to Ohio... I mean really, what does Michigan have to offer.... Ann Arbor??? I mean we've all heard stories about her... Rich Rodriguez???? Need I say more.... little bucks everywhere???? Ridiculous gun seasons....????
What a sad sad state you live in my friend...

You would think that the money that the big buck craze brings into Ohio, that Michigan would want to follow suit and try to keep up with the times... All they would have to do is get rid of the two buck limit, and change some gun seasons, and bang it could be one of the top producing states....

They are probably being heavily lobbied by the farm bureau and the insurance companies.

That must suck...... I wonder why they do that... think about the $$ it would generate having a one buck season....... imagine if some of those "cold weathered" bucks could get a couple more years of growth..... just letting each hunter shoot only one buck is not going to kill your harvest #'s. You'll control your population more by shooting more does...........
