Rodriguez has debut spoiled by UtahUpdated: August 30, 2008, 7:58 PM EST 5 comments add this RSS blog email print ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Michigan's new era opened in a painfully familiar way for the 100,000-plus fans at the Big House: With an ugly loss.
Rich Rodriguez's debut as Wolverines coach was spoiled when Utah's Brian Johnson threw for 305 yards and a touchdown and Louie Sakoda kicked four field goals, providing enough scoring to hold on for a 25-23 win over the Wolverines on Saturday.

Michigan, which was upset by second-tier Appalachian State to begin last season, lost consecutive openers for the first time since 1989-90.
Utah outscored the Wolverines 25-3 in the first half and took a 15-point lead into the fourth quarter, but had a punt blocked and fumbled to give Michigan a shot to come back.
Steven Threet, who replaced Nick Sheridan at quarterback, perfectly lofted a 33-yard pass to Junior Hemingway and Sam McGuffie ran for a score on the next drive to pull Michigan within two points midway through the fourth.
Threet's pass on the 2-point conversion was high and the next two drives ended on three-and-outs. Michigan's final drive with an incomplete pass on fourth down deep in Michigan territory.
Utah coach Kyle Whittingham is 5-3 against Bowl Championship Series schools and the latest such victory was an important first step in giving the Utes a chance to bust the BCS at the end of the season.

Was definitely an ugly game for our offense. 1st half defenseive secondary sucked. Didn't help our offense couldn't keep them off the field. Second half was much better for both sides. Our D-line was dominant, only allowing 30 yards or so of total offense 2nd half, along with 4 sacks, 1 int, and 1 fumble recovery. Utah absolutely was the better team. They have a really good 5th year Sr. QB and an AA kicker that made the difference. I had been predicting a 17-16 win for UM, but I knew it would be close. We actually had the 2 point conversion almost caught. Any word on Beanie's injury?

MI, didn't look that bad and I think Utah is going to be a really good team this year.
MS & IL looked horrible. Those teams have NO defense! As a group the Big Ten is open to more ridicule for being a weak conference. WI will be tough. The rest.....shouldn't be a big deal including PS.
