plum, maybe?

It's not a persimmon.. The leaves are toothed on this sample and persimmons are smooth. Same shape though. And a persimmon fruit will have most times a point on the bottom and hard petals at the stem..
This looks to be either a Plum or a Crabapple. I am leaning towards the Sweet Crabapple.
Since there are 4 variates of crabapple in our region and something like 8 species of plum I can't tell you for sure what species... Cut open that fruit and tell me if there is 1 seed or many like an apple... That will narrow it down..
I can tell you the exact species but I'll need a little clearer picture of the leaf, the tree, and a closeup of the bark....
But if you just want to know if it's a plum or an apple cut it open.... It could be a Green American plum, were there any red soft fruits on the tree... Like a black plum but pinkish red color?

I was thinkin crabapple. My brother in law has one behind his house in a field of tall weeds. The weeds are trampled all around this tree from the deer. I wish I had a trail camera to set up there so I could see what kind of deer are visiting. I am setting up a ground blind close to there before long. i will keep you updated.

Ive never seen crabapple this big, we used to have a crabapple in our back yard and they were a lot smaller..........anyway, I found a grove of these things but their isnt much deer sign around them, they must not be to tasty. I'll throw my camera up next week and see if they are getting any visitors.

A few blurry leaves and a green fruit... I think narrowing it down to 2 species was pretty good. About the only things I could gather about the sample was The leaves were not pinnately or Bipinnately compound, the leaves were elliptical and saw-toothed. The twig was smooth light brown and I couldn't tell if it was ending in a spine... That could have gone either way. The Sweet crabapple (found only in the Ohio valley) or the American plum. Both are in the same family of tree... Would Mr. "Knows his trees" like to tell the class what family both trees are in?? :cheeky-smiley-022::biggrin::)

Ok maybe you do know your trees.. :D I thought it would take you a little longer than that...
A sweet crabapple has a yellowish Green fruit with a long stalk also...
I have one that has been stumping me for weeks..... Pinnately compound leaves similar to a Black Walnut. The leaves are not saw toothed like a black walnut but hold the same shape except these leaves sometimes have 2 small lobes where the leaf begins to round on the bottom near the leaf stalk.. The bark is not dark brown and furrowed like a wallnut, but tightly grooved and light brown. The inside wood is not purple like a black walnut but white. There is no fruit or keys for seeds.
I swear it looks just like a black walnut except it's a lighter and tighter bark without toothed leaves and a white heart. I know it's not a box elder It looks like it could be a green Ash But none of the nine or 10 samples I found had any keys or fruit.

If the fruit is soft, it is a plum. Crabapples, even when ripe, will be hard, just like a regular apple. Crabapples have been ripe for some time, and are mostly on the ground by now. If they are not on the ground, they are a deep, dark red color. We picked our crabapples a month ago. This is a plum tree. No question!
