View Full Version : How about the Reloaders here?
I am fairly new to this sight and was looking for someone to talk to about laoding. I have loaded for over 35 years and load for all my rifles, 12 ga and 16 ga. I will be getting a loader for Mommy's 20 ga and the boys 410 to soon.
Last year I got a good deal on some Hevi Shot and got the manaul and well I will see how it will do this early goose season.
Right now I am working on a load for my 300 WSM that Santa got me last year, I must have been a very good boy.

does arrahs count,i reload my own
I do alot of reloading but I am in to varmint rounds for long range shooting.
I just got back from out in South Dakota prairie dog shooting and I was also hopping to make a 1500yd shot this year but the wind just would not give me a brake.
I did make a shot last year killing a prairie dog at 1248yds getting me in the downrange club with the VHA.
I am thinking about going back out to SD here in about 4 to 5 weeks to try again for that shot.
That my picture from last year on the left side.
Rick,
We have a 1000 yard range that is just 15 mins from my place and last weekend they held a state 1000 yard shoot. If you want I will see whare I put the info on the shoots and how to get intouch with the people there.
I don't know whare you live but I am 10 mins north of Cambridge on I-77.
Frank R. Steed.
ps what are you shooting them dogs with?
7th
I know where that range is at, the guy that runs it e-mail me about it all the time.
Sidney is about 50 miles north of Dayton and 30 miles south of Lima and its right along I-75
This year for PD shooting I use a 223 bolt and a AR15 plus a 22-250 and I take along a big bore 338 hopping to do that 1500yd shooting that I didn't get to do do to the weather.
I am think about going back out in about 4 to 5 weeks after my daughters wedding.
Do you do any groundhog hunting ?
Rick,
I hunt hogs when I can, the first year that my father-in-law let me hunt them here I got about 23 in less then 45 mins. Well that was a few years ago and there is only a few here now and they are getting fewer;) . I don't have any out in the 40 ac hay field now:( , I would like to try my new 300 WSM on one out there about 400 yds after I get it worked out.
I did not have a graff with me the last time at the range but it should be about 3100 fps with AA-4350 and a Sierra 165 gr HPBT. The group was 4 rounds 5/8"HX3/4"W. I pulled the 4th round and with it in there it is only 1 1/4"HX3/4"W.
I can not wait till deer season in WV this fall to see how this will do on deer, I know that it will do all that my 300 Win Mag but I love a new toy:D .

You left out loading for handguns. I load about 99.9% of the centerfire ammo I shoot. Right now, for shotguns, I can only load for 12 and 20 ga., but plan to get a .410 loader soon. As for rifles I don`t even know how many cal`s I can load for at present, but the smallest is a .17 AH and the largest is the .411 Hawk, yes I like wildcats. For handgun I load several different rounds from the .38 to .454.
You Sidny boys run in packs? I see that there is alot of you all on here. I don't even know ware you all are, have to check the map:confused: .
I have 20 plus dies for rifles and 2 for handguns, I like the 41 Rem the most:D . Now that the boys are getting into shooting I am going to have to get a job just to keep them in Ammo:rolleyes: .
So far I have all my guns loaded with IMR-4350 or 4064 and CCI 200 or 250. If I am shooting good that day all of my guns will print at 1/2" or less at 100 yds, if I am having a very good day I have 3 that will do 1/2" or less at 200 yds:D . Well with the farm and looking for work I don't get my range time in and well them days are getting ferther apart:( .

I load'em from 17 Rem. and up. But a bucket of lead. thrown out the end of a 45-70 rollingblock at paper or groundhogs, still pumps the heart strong!!!!
Catfish is a firend of mine and I can tell you 7th thats the guy to ask about the wildcat loads. Myself I not in to wildcat stuff but you never know maybe some day right now I am in to long long range shooting and varmint blasting.
The powder I like right now to shot is Varget do to when I go out to South Dakota in the hot weather it works better for me so I load just about everything with it.

VARGET is one, if not my favorite powder. I use it in so many rounds GREAT STUFF, Jeff
Varget powder help me make the 1000yd dowrange club last year with a 1248yds shot on a pd with a 22-250 and a 55gr V-Max bullet.
Good powder !
I like my IMR's and Sierra's, I have one bullet that I use that is not from Sierra and that is a 120 gr 7mm hornety (sp?). All I use is HP's too. The 30 cal 165 gr HPBT Game King is as good a bullet on deer as I have ever seen, the only deer that I have lost with it was not the bullets falt.
Frank R. Steed.
I have shot some 110gr V-Max in my 30/06.

Let's get this reloading chat going.
7th: Coyote Kate & I just heard about your 1000yd range today at the range we belong to. You're only about 35 miles from us. Is it a members only range? If so what are the dues? Can you invite a guest sometime. I heard you have cement benches & that it is pretty nice. If you would please pm me some more info.
I do reloading for mostly varmint rounds. I use to do some 20ga reloading, but I think it is almost as cheap to by shotshells these days. I would like to be able to reload some hot 3 1/2'' 12ga shells for coyote w/ #4 buck. Don't worry I can take it .............. I have a sissy butt stock on my 870 Super Mag. :D ;) (What, did you think I was dumb or something?) :p I got one of those Hogue Compustocks (nice) when they were marketing them.
I also reload for some pistol (6BR, 45ACP, & 45LC).
I'm a big fan of Hodgson's powders (Titegroup, Lilgun, & *VARGET*).
I find myself liking Hornady's bullets more all the time. I would like to get their powder thrower w/the interchangable measures.
More later I gotta go............
Your right about the powders not working so good in them powder measures I use a RCBS digital scale to work up all of my loads.
I at a time !
Rick,
I got a RCBS Partner Electronic and after the move a few weeks ago from my farm, it will not work. Don't get me wrong, it was my falt. I will have to send it back to get the load crystal replaced. I got a good gift last year from Dad, he gave me a Lyman auto scale. This is one that has the beams and you can see right off the bad ware it is and it is right on when you get is set.
I have been after Sierra for years to make a 130 gr HPBT Game King in the 7mm and I would only have Sierra bullets in my house. Like I said I only use Hollow Points. I may brake this next year, if I can work out this trip to Colorado.
V V,
I am not in the club but I have looked at the place, I just got the info from a gun shop in Cashocton, right there on 541? I hope to be that way soon for a Job interiew. I will pick up a new letter that they have there. I will pm you and let you know. By the way You can have the 3 1/2", I will kill my geese and ducks with a 3".
How out there is Looking at the new Short Mags? I am working up a load for my 300 WSM. I have fire and hand lapped the bb and have still not shot 50 rounds through it and getting under 1" groups.
Lets hear about pet loads!
Frank R. Steed.
Are you going to Colorado to try your luck at varmint hunting ?
Rick,
Last time I looked Elk was not a Varmint but I think they could be:D . No I wont to take my Dad, Step-Dad and oldest Son out for Elk. I will have to how things go about getting a job first, but things are looking good now.
I have a friend that wants me to come out, this is not a big Bull area but all I am looking for is a good time with the family. I have killed some very nice deer and am at the point that hunting is a family and friend thing then big bucks. Plus with 4 boys I can use up some deer meat. We put 11 up last year and we was out of deer by March, I will not butcher a cow till we are out, we like it that much.
If we can get out there I may not have to kill a cow the next year :D . How about this "save a cow eat a elk."
Frank R. Steed.
I haven't did any big game hunting in years do to getting in to long range shooting and varmint hunting, all of my rifles are setup for that all but one and I am thinking about putting it up for sale.
The rilfs I am thinking about selling I got to maybe some day go bear hunting and now I just don't think I will be doing that so I am telling myself to sell it, I would be lucky to have shot a box of shells in it.
Do you know anyone looking for a Ruger M77 in a 30/06 do you?

Just depends if you're a farmer in elk country. :D
I use to shoot a lot of Sierra bullets & I really like their Blitzkings. I shot a lot of Nosler Balistatips, but you aren't getting any more for the extra money you spend on them.
I've been looking at that Lyman digital powder measure. That might be something you would be interested in Rick cause it measures one load at a time. ;)

elk,a varmint,oh i wish i knew this.i could have saved a lot of money an got a small game license
Lance,
Let me know when you get up on the 16, I have been loading for them for over 30 years and I still fell it is the best all around shell till you get to geese. I have not Duck hunted with mine but I was told that the new Rem 870 16 ga bb will fit the old ones and I may see about getting one for my old corn cob.
Rick,
I am in for the long range but I like to keep it in a range that I can use for hunting. I have a stand in WV that by my range finder I have a shot to the right of 427 yds and left is 327 yds, I just wish the deer would not come out of the woods right under my feet. I did get one last year at 222 yds in the first 15 mins opening day.
Is anyone loading for the 300 WSM?
Frank R. Steed.
I like that 400 to 500 yard area to be shooting but I am pushing myself to some day get up to the 2000yd mark.
I am hopping after my daughters wedding I can make it back out to SD to try again for 1500yds.
Have you ever wanted to try prairie dog shooting ?
ITs a blast I can tell you and its not like shooting groundhogs where you have to wait for hours to get a shot, PD shooting there is live targets all day long.
Anyway I am hopping to have some time today after dinner to hit the fields before dark for a hog or two.

hey all,
i have been reloading for about 12 yrs and reload evrything if i could figure out the rimfire thing i would do that too..:D im mostly into varmint stuff with the 223 rem my favorite. my first bullet choice for accuracy i always lean to sierra's line of matchkings.
rick
i used to be a member of the vha and read it religiously. tried to go to SD one year but fell thru. hard to get my hunting buddies into shooting those little guys (prarie dogs). do you hunt on the rose bud or other ?
Eric
madriver223
No we don't hunt on the Rose Bud Reservation.
The land we hunt on is about 30 miles north of Rose Bud and we have found that there alot of ranchers in SD that will just about do anything for guys to come out just to shoot for them.
My buddy from Michigan found this out this year when we was a day late meeting up with him in July in SD.
He made one stop at a ranch and the rancher showed him a place to shoot on till me and my other buddy made it out there.
So its not that hard to find places to shoot on.
My favorte load for the 223 case is 26.0grs Varget with a CCI 450 primer and a 55gr Moly V-Max.
For the 22-250 case I like a 55gr Moly V-Max with 36.0grs Varget with CCI 250 primers.
That load for the 22-250 got me in to the 1000yds downrange club with a one shot two PD kill at 1248yds in SD last year.
I am getting thing ready to head out to SD here in four weeks for one more week of shooting this year hopping to move up to the 1500yd club if the weather is good.
Well I heading out to the reloading bench so I will talk to you later.
I got the info on the 1,000 yd range and anyone that wants can get with them about going, the e-mail is; YOGISHOOTER@msn.com
Tom Sarver. The range is just South of Plainfield Oh on SR-541. The next Match is Sep 13th & 14th.
I am not a member but if you need help getting there let me know I can give you directions.
All things go well I hope to get out to the range soon to test some new loads for my 300 WSM, I want to test them in WV this fall.
I will be able to make that Match do to thats my daughter wedding on the 13th plus they have me do stuff on the 14th.
Anyway is that range open all the time or just on weekends?
Rick,
Go to the address in my last post and that is the most I can tell you about the Range. I stopped by it on my way back from a job interview one day, it looks nice but is only for 1,000 yds. I picked up a flyer from a gun shop in Cashocton. This range is on SR-541 half way from Cashocton and I-77 in Plainfield.

Hey Rick: iffen you are comin this far let me know when. I'm not that far from there & maybe, just maybe I could meet up w/ you & 7th.
7th: now if Rick & I happen to meet w/you & you feed us some of those viddles you been talkin' about, take it easy on me because when it comes to food I want to do the bitin'. :D ;)
V V,
Do you mean that I can not use the hot peppers that I got in the garden:eek: .
I forgot that they have a make up shot set for Oct 11th & 12th. I would like to do some talking and get back into some long range shooting again sometime.
Hey guys I may have to wait till after my trip out west before coming down that way do to I am reloading for my trip to SD and my daughters wedding coming up around that time.
I got a list of honey do's that will not stop to do before this wedding.
Lucky Me !
I will be happy when this wedding over with and the bills stop coming in for it.

7th: I don't mind heat if it means flavor, but if it gets sooooo hot you can't taste anything might as well eat dirt. IMHO
Plus we need to keep Rick in our prayers. I couldn't find him last week because he was buried under a huge "honey do" list. I think his wife needs arrested for husband cruelity. Poor guy, he retires & his wife thinks she has a live-in labour. :( :o
I am hoppy thing will slow down after this wedding.
V V,
I like to have some things that work on your buds:eek: , but I don't get into it like my buddy that was in the Army with me. Robby would drink half a bottle of some hot sous that would scoure your tong.
Rick,
Hope you get some time to yourself:cool: , I am glad that I only have 4 boys, would have liked to have a girl but glad that I will not have to go through the things that a father of a girl will:eek:
I have a house full of girls 2 daughters a wife and even the dog is a girl and I just about forgot I have a grand daughter living hear.
The bad thing about having girls is the older they get the more it cost even if they are not at home any more like mine.
I was thinking when they moved out I would have some time to myself but now it can you come over and fix something or help me buy something for my house.
Anyway I going to get some time to myself when this weeding over with and I am heading out to SD for some more shooting.
One more thing that is good about going to SD is that my cell phone don't work out there so they can't get ahold of me till I hit the highway home.
I told my wife and kids I am bookup this coming weekend do to I am helping out at a big benchrest shoot at are club.
The shoot called NBRSA .
Talk to you later

7th. where is this 1000 yrd range your talking about near Cambridge. That's not too far from me and I'd like to maybe go down and do a little shooting. Can you give me some info on it or do they have a Web site or phone number?
Birdy,
I put the web sight on page 2. I see you are just north of me, will have to see about getting some time to visit soon.
