So i have been hunting for 8 yrs now, and have not gotten a deer. For some reason i can feel it in my bones, that i will get one this year. From all the planning and scouting, to practicing with the shooting, i believe this is my year...problem is i dont wanna mess up the meat while field dressing it. I have read and watched some internet videos, but have never done one myself. I have helped a budyy about 4 yrs ago dress one, but that was too long ago to remember. PLUS, if i get a decent buck, i would like it mounted ( head )

can anyone give me advice or how-to's as to field dress a buck if i want it mounted?

Your more than likely never gonna mess up the meet unless you let it rot. It's pretty simple, cut from the anus up to the sternum and pull everything out (guts/inards)...that's pretty much it and is as basic as it gets....it's not rocket sicence and has been existing for thousand of years.

For the mount:

Do not cut the hide/cape any further up then at the sternum (where the rib cages meet in the front)...follow this and you should be good to go.

Go out the first day of squirrel season with the trusty 12 guage. Slay a couple tree rats, take them home and clean them. Same basic idea as a deer, just smaller. As for the cape, any good processor knows how, otherwise let the taxidermist do it, they will charge more, but they know what they need. Good luck.

Don't cut any of the hide past the breast bone/rib cage. Get it washed out as soon as possible. Get it cool as soon as possible.

Good luck!

I had the same issue last year. What I did is found a few guys that hunt close to where I live. They called me when they got a deer and I would go out there and watch them gut the deer and then help them drag the deer out. Because that is what friends are for.

That is a great idea. I am probably an hour away from you hshawn31 but you would be welcome to look over my shoulder if you like.
