How is everyone doing? Long time member of OS and looking forward to the season. I'm glad to be part of the team and hopefully we can all fill some tags this year.
Just so everyone knows, once the season starts I won't have alot of time to post. I usually have some free time on the weekend to check e-mail and respond. Ocasionally during the week I get a few minutes first thing in the morning to jump on the computer but not very often. I'll do my part for the team. If anyone needs to get ahold of me for whatever reason, I can give you my cell #.

I haven't introduced myself yet. My name is Dane Greene, I live in East Liberty, Ohio (Logan County). I have been married for 14yrs and have 1 son and 1 daughter. I work part time for Global Precision Parts and during the hunting season I am A guide for 5 Star Trophy Outfitters. My wife tells me that if it weren't for her and the kids my passion for bowhunting would completely consume me. I have to admit, she is right!:shhh:
I do most of my hunting in Logan County but make it into Shelby, Champaign, and Union Counties as well. I make a yearly trip to Fulton County Illinois and although it has been a couple years I make the annual pilgrimage to Deer Camp @ Lake Hope State Park (Zaleski State Forest).

Well guy's my name is mike,I'm in the northern part of the state. Have been married for 19 years and the wife Knows I'm gonna be in the Woods or on the water alot. She is cool with me with the out doors. I hunt Belmont & jefferson co.Some public some private.the last few years on public have been good to me during Bow season.Nothing huge, but nice Bucks from public.I have my eye on A few really nice Bucks in jefferson co at my inlaws place.the nicer bucks have made threw acouple of years and are What I'm looking For this year.If they come out to play this year I stand a good chance with one of them.I fish lake Erie Alot and will be Torn between Getting in the woods and on the water.Usually there is a 3 week window late Oct thru mid Nov that if a Mature Buck comes in Bow range I probibly will go for it.does not really matter about points or spread as long as he looks Good. By that time I have passed up alot of small younger bucks.Usually take a doe or two with the bow anytime during the season.Looking forward to this season and doing my best to keep our team play fun.

What is the M vs O contest?
I haven't read through all the rules, did I miss something?
I have taken some real nice bucks in the last few years, between Indiana and Ohio in the last 5 years.... 136-3/8,142-5/8,144-7/8, 148-1/8,186-3/8, 189-7/8 gross, and some others in the 120's and this year I am onto several good bucks also. I have pictures of a 7x6 typical with a 20" spread and know of a 12 pt typical that will go at least 170 and 3 other bucks that will be between 140-150 in my immediate hunting area. In the last 5 years or so, I have been passing up a lot of bucks to get a chance at something big. This year I am set up on a creek crossing in a very narrow funnel between a large block of unhunted timber and a 50 acre cornfield and 10 acre woods. I feel that it is not a matter of if, but a matter of when one of the big ones will come by.
I have been very fortunate to obtain hunting permission from a couple of landowners who only let me hunt, and that is something that gives a big advantage over hunting ground with a lot of pressure.
FranciscoJ
09-03-2008, 09:03 AM
The M vs O contest is something they threw together just recently. (Its a sticky on the previous page). Basically, it follows the same rules as our contest. Michigan has I think 26 teams where they choose 1 person from each team. We have 18 teams + 8 alternates or something. The two teams ( total 24-26 people each or so ), then take their submitted dear and whoever scores higher...wins.
Make sense?

I won't lie...I wanna do it. I will leave it up to my team should they decide to allow me the privelige, a huge thanks.
UPDATE: I just got back from the archery range. I am dead-on centered and sighted for the season. I am crosshair-accurate at 20yrds and +/- 10yrds I am set. I am good to go for the season.

I have a great doe population out hear and have taken somne rather large ones in the past. I have to read the rules on the M vs O contest, haven't really been following them that much. And hey sorry it's been so quiet from my end, I have 6 kids that are all in fall sports, now can you see why I enjoy the time in the woods so much, lol. It deosn't matter to me really. I believe you are the eldest statesman on the team so if you want to represent the team I don't have a problem w/ it. If Francisco wants to do it and is positive w/out a doubt he can contribute to the contest, he is more than welcome to that responsibility. I do believe that it needs to be someone w/ years of experience and knows he can fill his tags.
If you want to do it Wally, you have my support!

On a sidenote guys, I was at a restaurant yesterday and struck gold. I got in on a farm that 1) has no other hunters, 2) is overun by deer and 3) the owner wants the deer GONE!!!
I know I am new. I know I have YEARS to go before I truly hone my skills. All I can do is promise I will genuinely give it my 110% best. I understand this contest is for fun, but I also realize the level of pride it does provide. Should you all desire to have Wally be our rep, I will gladly step aside for what's best for the team / site.
Spitfire

My personal opinion is each team should be represented by someone w/ years of experience. Along w/ that experience comes the confidence in knowing those tags will get filled because they do every year.

Your day will come FranciscoJ, Wally has earned his spot to represent our team for the OS vs.MS contest. I think I can speak for the rest of the team when I say, we don't want you stepping aside, we need you to give 110% for our team. Continue honing your skills cause it is a never ending process for all of us. It just comes down to experience for me.

Some of you guy's might have seen some of the deer I have taken already but some may not have. The Mule deer are from Wyoming and the whitetail are all ohio public land Bucks. Not huge by any standard,But decent Bucks none the less.I'll spend every weekend hunting the season and 12 days vacation.I'll buy 6 tags this year and expect to fill every one.I have some private property that looks Awesome for 2 Bucks that i can't believe made it thru another year and are in Big trouble if they get close, that I know of that are there. The public land bucks I never see ahead of time. But I like to hunt travel route's between Swamps and Hills that funnel Bucks scent checking for does right by me and have killed 3 of my last 4 bucks that way and have seen a few shooters that I just could not close the deal on the last few years.I will be very Relentless as some know already. If the other guy's feel they have a better chance and can put in the time then I would welcome them stepping up :)

I have acouple up in jefferson co and need to get some up in Belmont.Never killed a Buck early in the season.this might be the year.I have someone filling me in on the movements of 2 Big boy's but need to find out for my self starting this weekend.Funny thing is I have Too many deer in My back yard ,But can't touch them :nono: So off to southern Ohio I must drive.

It looks like Wallydog knows how to get it done, and thats good.
I would also represent our team if needed. I have taken a buck in Ohio and 2 in Indiana (bow and firearm) for each of the last 19 years or so, along with Kansas, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. I have complete confidence in filling both tags and I won't shoot any small bucks (120" or less).

Hopefully just rain.I like the Ideal of getting in the area and out in the Damp woods with out leaving much behind.Where the stands are going, the area doe's not see many people.Once there up,I'll leave them till primetime then start using them.I do have a climber to use,but like to be able to slip in and out of the areas that deep with out having to pack in or out.
Spitfire
09-12-2008, 01:12 PM
I totally agree, any scent you do leave behind will be washed away pretty quick. I like the climber as well when you have to be mobile and having a few stands already in place sure makes it nice when you need to put it in "stealth mode".

The thread about "Shooting Distance" got me thinking. I took out my target and crossbow today. I am now sighted in at 40yrds (right at dial #5 on Horton Range-Finder). Things hits almost dead-center at 40yrds, 20/25yrds and of course 30yrds. I think I have a good range of distance shots available now. Although I think keeping it as close to 20yrds is best.
wallydog1
09-15-2008, 04:35 PM
Most effective Range is gonna be 25 yards and in.Lots of things can start to go Wrong every 5 yards after that IMO.But if everything looks good and the Deer seem to be relaxed when you shoot at longer distance then only you can make that Call.Trying to set up at 20 yards and in is a sweet Zone to stick them In ;) Let them Bed down and don't start chasing them after you stick one. That will give them time to die with out a long tracking Job,Which is not very Fun :(

So I got formal confirmation from my contact about my private farm to hunt. I went to local restaurant (where lady works) and just asked if her friend had a chance to consider me hunting her farm.
The waitress said she didn't have time to pass along my info properly but 1) has all my contact info and 2) is 110% positive her friend is going to be "thrilled" someone wants to hunt her land. I think that's as good as any old confirmation.
I didn't push the subject as I was in and out in less then 2min. I said hello, politley asked, then said thank you and left. Time to get my **** situated...don't ya think?

So today I got bored waiting for my "contact" to get my information on the hunting land I supposedly "had". So I started driving in that area and knocking on doors.
So, I knocked on a few and I got skunked...bad. I then went to the final (and best looking) farm / ranch. Turns out I got FULL permission and hunting rights for a roughly 30acre plot of land.
It's not huge but only myself and one other hunter hunt this plot. It is where when driving I spotted 1 buck and 2 doe. And when landowner showed me his property line, we turned a house corner and were "face-to-face" with yet another doe.
There is a massive field of grass (shaped like a half oval). Trees outline the field other then the "flat side" where house is. On what would be the left side (at bottom of hill with trees) is a creek. Along the treeline there is a precut path cut into the tall grass. I am hoping this is where the deer travel as a blind / stand would be very easily placed in prime position.
It shows a lot of prospect. I start scouting tomorrow and will put up a camera and my blind.

I went out yesterday and saw a couple of doe and 2 bucks. The bucks were really young so I don't even think I woulda shot a 4pointer.
I scared a doe off (confirmed with trail cams) as I walked ot the stand. My trail cam confirms doe visits to the area. Mostly VERY VERY early or in the evening. I am going to try some evening hunting tonight and see how the action is.
My main plan is to more then anything else pattern the deer in the area. The season is long so I am not going to stress myself early on.

Tonight I got what is my 1st kill!!!
Perserverance does pay off. tonight I learned how true that is. I got into my stand for a evening hunt at 4pm. All my camera shots showed VERY early morning deer or VERY late deer.
Basically at about 7:00 or so, I looked to my left towards a noise I heard. When I turned back, I was facing (and her lookingat me) a deer. took 15min of VERY VERY slow moving to get crossbow up. there were 2 deer and the first kept moving so i didn't fell comfortable with the shot. the 2nd deer loved left about 10yrds and was LESS then 20yrds from me so i took the broadside shot.
I accidentally pushed it twice so after watching it slowly hobble the 2nd time, I decided to let it go. I wanna play it safe (especially since i lost the bloodtrail in the dark). So first light tomorrow I am going to recover it and post pics and give us another 5pts.

Look at where you last shot the deer and look for any sign.Blood, hair your arrow.Mark the spot's as you find the sign blood, hair, tracks or tracked up ground with something.keep moving in the direction the sign points to or the last area you seen the deer.Move slow and try not to move and destroy any sign and take your time,If you don't see any sign go to the last place spotted and slowly look in the direction you saw it moving.Be careful with your knife gutting and don't cut in the gut's :)
good luck

I leave at 6:45am to get there at first light and start the search. I saw the location and direction it was headed. Seemed to bed down / stop every 30-40yrds or so. People in chat said this is a good sign (both hobbling and stopping). After shot, I could see how one of it's legs was "useless".
Any advice on the recovery ro is it basic search and destroy???...lol
So what ever happened to the doe you shot? Did you recover this one??

Trust me dude, it's just a doe. Yes she is dead, just waiting on some pics from my uncle to post up. Maybe when I get them I will send them to you to post for me, OK.
It was 70 some degrees and rising quickly when I got the deer and I was in a big hurry to get it to the check station and then to the meat locker (50 mile round trip) I didn't have time to go and get my camera for fear of the deer spoiling so I had my uncle snap a quick picture. He isn't too quick about getting things done, so I will let you know when I get it.

I had a monster 14pt typical within 8 yards on Friday evening in the last 10 minutes of shooting light. He was quartering to me the whole time because he came down a fencerow from behind me along with a small 6 pt. The only shot I had was a straight on or quartering to shot, I won't take it, too risky. All he had to do was take about 2 more steps forward and I would have had a clear broadside shot. Anyway, it got too dark to see and I waited about 45 minutes before getting down. When I got down to walk out I heard a deer blow and run into the cornfield. I know he didn't smell me, but he might have saw me because the moon was kind of bright.
This is my 20th year bowhunting and I have never actually seen a deer like this one, his main beams are really long and it looks like a rake turned upside down.... points everywhere. I woke up every hour on Friday night, couldn't sleep, kept thinking about how hard it is to get a deer of that caliber in that close and then not to close the deal. Pretty bummed out about it, but I am going to stay on him. I have 3 trail cam pics of him from this summer
I hunted the same stand Sat. and Sunday night hoping he might return. Saturday night I saw 3 does and 2 button bucks.
Last night I had a 115 class 8 point come right in and make 3 scrapes right around my stand and also had a doe come in.
I am trying to stay positive, knowing that the best hunting is only days away. Good luck guys.

Saturday was a bust for me on public.did not see a deer while hunting.seen 15 driving to my spot.Sunday morning I Had a Buck come by me while it was still dark 6:30am.I herd him come down the hillside and came within 25 to 30 yards of my stand.I knew it was a Buck because he was thrashing a tree pretty good straight on the side of me within 30 yards.I believe he was one of the Big boy's on the property. While he walked you could here all the sappling's raking across his Rack.knowing I could not shoot,I just wanted him to keep moving since the wind was in my Favor and I could not totally see him and the Time was just too Early.got out of my stand and followed what I believe was the Trail he was on,picked a good tree to setup in later.Walked up on a Nice little 6 pt within 25 yards and we just looked at each other until he just walked away.

Hey, I need to borrow your brains for a moment.
I am going to be out of town the 23rd to the 27th. I won't be able to start the rut hunt until next Tuesday. Is this bad?
I mean I hear all the time about the pre-rut being the #1 time to hunt. Is me missing these 4 or 5 days gonna kill my chances? or if I get out there as much as possible that Tuesday and hunt...may I still get some of that sweet action?
traphunter
10-20-2008, 02:26 PM
Don't worry man. While there can be some great action during that week, i see most of my rut activity the first two weeks of November. Besides if you already know that you cant hunt those days, there is no need to worry about it is there?:)

Cisco, you are not going to miss out during that time.Nov will be the best time to give it your all.Sometime's you will be in the right Spot during the prime time, and sometime's the action is else where. It's just a good time to be focused on a decent buck during the Rut.

I agree Wally, but it looks like the rain and especially the wind are going to make it tough going for this entire weekend, at least up here in the NW part of the state.
I am going to give it a go anyways, the bucks are getting in the pre-rut good up here now. The stand that I have been hunting is a fencerow right in the middle of about 150 acres of corn. 1/2 mile to the north and 1/2 mile to the south are big blocks of woods that get little to no hunting. I have seen 7 bucks in my last 4 evening hunts from that stand, including that 14 point and 2 other big 8's. I passed up one of the big 8's on Monday night at about 20 yards. He looked to go around 140 or so, the biggest buck that I have passed on so far. On Wednesday night I saw an absolute monster 8 point that came out of the corn about 50 yards to the east of me and went right on through the fencerow and back into the corn on the other side. I grunted at him and he looked my way, but just ignored it and went on. I think it was because the wind was blowing from him to me and he couldn't smell where the sound was coming from. I would guess him at 150-160 class. An awesome frame on this deer with a huge spread. I am going to try to put another stand down the fencerow about 50 yards to the east of where I am at now because the fence is down there and all the deer seem to pass by that point sooner or later. There is a huge double trunked oak tree right there and would be perfect for a stand.

I think I will be going out today as well for a while. I don't know if I will see anything but there is a nice spot (on other side of field) I wanna try out. Any tips?

I normally don't even go out hunting till when you made that post at 5:30 p.m. or so. Are you hunting right up till 1/2 hour after sunset? If not, you are missing out on the absolute best time to see and or kill a buck.
Don't just give up because 1 buck doesn't come in. The real big ones don't come out till just before dark most of the time anyway.
Stay till you can't see and then stay another 15 minutes and then sneak out of there undetected. You will up your chances big time.

Very good points (my bad). So, if I head out at like 3-4pm and stay until I "cant see anymore"...thats the way to do it then? Like you said, if true, the big-boys won't even come out until 30min before dark or so. right?

Good point man. Would morning hunts or evening hunts be better? or more appropiately, are you referring to all day hunts, or just "long periods of hunting"?
