Where are you guys from. I am in Clark county now But I did live in Pickaway county. I hunt Clark, Pickaway, Vinton and Greene counties.. I think my plan will be to get the contest doe out of the way as soon as possible.. I like to shoot a doe early anyway. What’s you guys plans for the season?

From the mountains of western North Carolina, hence the name WNC Hunter, usually hunt Coshocton, Muskingum, and some in Licking counties. I will probally be up hunting most of one week in mid OCT and about 9-10 days in Early-Mid Nov.

Hey thanks for the Pm jackalope! I probably wouldn't have remembered on time otherwise. I hunt Highland, Hocking, and Athens county, both public and private land. I shoot a Mathews outback. I am so excited about this year and the contest and hopefully we all have a good time. If anyone is around any of those counties and wants to get i hunt together i love meeting new people.

I went down to Vinton county last weekend to scout and hang stands.. Found a few great scrapes and some good rubs. I didn't put a stand on them though. I prefer to hunt the funnels.. Next weekend it'll be 80 degrees , the meat would spoil before I could get it butchered.. Maybe I'll go just to hunt horns.

I haven't got out with the bow in my hand yet.. I still have some storm damage to clean up at the house this weekend.. That's ok though, In my opinion it's been too hot to be out hunting. I don't like rushing to get deer out of the woods and to my house, then rushing to get them frozen.. I also like to let my deer hang for a day or so, and it needs to be in the low 40's to do that.. I may get out this weekend depending on the overnight temps.

Thanks for letting me know that, I wasn't aware you hunted the same area I did. If you wanna come down here and do some public land hunting on Wayne National, I would be more then happy to let you show me where all these deer are hiding. That's why I don't post much on here anymore, there is always someone who knows better!!

Here she is.. I was hunting a hollow testing this scent smoker thing out.. Well about 9:50 I had 6 does and 9 fawns feeding slowly around my stand. I smoked this one at 30 yards double lung and top of the heart. She ran about 30 yards and piled up.. If I would have had more 15 dollar tags on me i could have hit another one.. They just stood there and watched her crash like, what the hell is her problem? But i really didn't feel like dragging 2 of em out of that hollow. 300 yards as the crow flies off the ridge results in a total elevation drop of 270 feet. Steep Steep Steep...

How’s it going for everyone.. We've got 1 doe on the board and Chopiq has killed one with his muzzy, anybody else killing / seeing deer?.. It just now started to get cold and I have seen deer in the fields in droves.. should be some good hunting coming up.. I'm taking vacation on the 8th through the 16th and will hopefully shoot a buck then.. I'll be in a stand from sun up to sundown doing all day hunts for 9 days straight in Vinton County. That’s almost 100 hours in a stand during rut.. Should work out if I did my homework right.

I hunting all last week didn't have much luck, saw a couple of small bucks, the only doe I had a chance at was 40 yards out and I thought she would feed in closer, she ended up feeding off the other way o well. Hope everyone else is seeing more movement than I did. Good Luck

I missed a huge buck and a doe both within 10 mins this morning. On both shots my arrow hit an "invisible" branch and reflected the arrow. Talk about a let down.:(

I wasn't sure if I should cry or laugh. But that's the nature of hunting. Learned from my mistakes now I'm moving on.

Went out Wenesday 19th and it was cold 15 degrees but luckily the wind was not blowing so it was tolerable. Deer were moving all day long. Saw a nice 8 pointer but he never got in range. All together saw 5 bucks and 6 does. Could have shot a doe 10 yards away but she had a 8 pointer following her so i passed on her but she winded me and scared the buck away. All in all a good day. The bucks were dogging the does but they didnt seem to have any intrests in the bucks. Hows everyone else doing?

traphunter
11-22-2008, 12:34 PM
I haven't been out much since last Thursday when I shot my doe. I know the deer are still moving in some areas, but not so much on Public land, and plus I HATE BEING COLD!! I plan on going out a few more time before gun season, but after that I wont be bowhunting again until Mid-January.

I will be hunting during gun season for meat. I don't usually hunt just for meat but with the way things have been going I need fill my freezer as much as I can before season ends.

Good luck everyone.

Sucking that’s how I’m doing.. I feel like I am at the top of my game.. I just haven't found a buck that’s in my game this year.. I can't find them, if i can't find one and pattern him I can't hunt him... Sure I have seen some nice deer. But nothing to write home to tell momma about.. I passed a smaller 120 class 8 pt at like 10 yards from the ground. For the connect he would have been points, but I want that big 160 class 8 or 10.. I can't do that if I shoot a smaller one.. So in a way I have done this to myself. But usually i get hot on a bucks tail by this time.. so far this season I have spent over 200 hours in stands.. I haven't seen a buck worth shooting.. Something is wrong. I know they are there..

chopiq
01-08-2009, 07:33 AM
We've been quiet, how did everyone end up? I got a doe early in Oct with the early muzzleloader hunt and then during shotgun got another. Not one deer with my bow, first time in years that has happened.

jackalope
01-08-2009, 10:58 AM
I have been getting my butt whipped.. I couldn't get on a good buck this year.. I ALWAYS, have my eye on a good one within the first month of season and I hunt him hard.. This year I have been hunting FOR him hard... I have over 200 hrs in a stand this year with no big boys sighted from any of my stand sites.. I have however seen 1 maybe booner and probably 2 P&Y bucks in different situations... Once was in a blind and he showed up behind me up the side of a hill that was darn near a cliff. (they'll never come from that way).... The other was a stalk.. I was coming down a field edge real slow. a doe jumped up not 20 yards in front of me (i should have seen her) towing probably a P&Y buck.. They ran off to my right.. As soon as they left i looked out in the field and saw another buck stand up and start walking the same direction but it looked like he was going to come into the woods 60 or so yards ahead of me.. I got down low and started monkey walking super slow.. It took me 15 min to close 30 yards.. I sat there for another 20 min behind a small rise waiting for that buck to cut in front of me... Nothing... I eventually figured I was too late getting there and the buck had already crossed without me seeing him.. as soon as I stood up he busted out to my left not 30 yards away.. He must have been standing there the whole time just his head peeking over the hill. He was another solid P&Y..

I in Early season I passed on probably a 120 class 8pt from the ground at 7 yards.. I actually rattled him out of a clear-cut to 7 yards dead on.. Oh well i let him walk he’ll only be bigger next year.

chopiq
01-08-2009, 12:22 PM
I didn't have one shooter buck close enough all season. I did have an 8 pointer coming in but he was to far for a clean shot. As far as bucks are concerned worse year in along time.

How'd you do over the weekend jackalope? I think you said you were going out.

Went out friday evening to my stand on a big oak flat.. The snow had been on the ground since Wednesday and I was hoping to see a fair amount of tracks..... There wre only 3 sets of tracks in the snow 2 within shooting range... I'm not sitting here in this cold waiting for the 2 deer that have walked by in the past 3 days to show back up...

I made a vow not to let this shift in winter patterns ruin my late season hunts next year and set out to let the snow tell the story... My first walk was 3/4 of a mile down a ridge line that we call California ridge... In the 3/4 mile walk through mature hardwoods in the middle of 850 acres of good woods.. I cut 2 sets of deer tracks crossing the logging road.. 4 sets of coyote tracks 2 were males and 2 sets of fox... But only 2 deer in 3/4 of a mile of hardwoods...

Next I jetted over to our expansive tract of 15 year old pines where the deer seam to flock durring gun season as those pines are about 200 acres. I found good tracks around the edge of the pines in one area where Mede clear cut about 150 acres of hardwoods in the summer.. But nothing like i had been seeing early season....

We susspected durring the rut that we just wern't seeing the amount of deer we did in years past. It was like the aliens got them..

discouraged i jumped in the truck and went to visit the locals that are on the lease.. From there the story was told.. Durring shotgun the guys drive the proper repeatedly for the week of shotgun.. There were 34 dead deer found durring shotgun and another 14 found durring ML. The lady down the road with a pond has found over 30 since August....

Yep EHD, we excaped the wrath of EHD back in the fall of 07 but it appears we were not as lucky this fall and even into winter.. It must have hit us late right before deer season or even in the warm month of October.... Sure enough i went back and began to go to every water source I knew on the property dead deer everywhere.. It looked to me though they died late like early or even late november.. As a result I cut Coyote tracks all over the property..

I know there are still good amounts of deer on the property. I saw 3 shooters this year and passed on numerous smaller bucks.. I shot does when i felt like it. I can't say my season was a bust because of this. But i can say that between the deer on the lease moving to lower ground like AG fields, and the one dying of EHD it left our area virtually deerless come January...
