Alright guys welcome to the team #10!!!!! I waited a while to start this thread, but couldn't take it anymore!

A little bout myself. Name is Rich, work in the city, live in the country. NE O-H-I-O is my corner of the state. I hunt a mix of public and private properties in Geauga, Ashtabula, Lake, and Portage counties. My budy owns a large tree service and when he pulls into a nice piece of property, he pulls out his blanket statement: "Boy the deer must be tearing up this place" Depending on their reaction we usually have a new spot to scout! I've got a few cams, but I don't really put them out much, but some of our places have some insane potential. We've seen some dandies over 160' over the last 2 years, and unless they got hit by a car, chances are pretty good they'll be back.

I know last year is in the past, but I think this team could make a splash.

I live and hunt in Athens County, work at Ohio U, and hunt mainly 3 properties (1 being new this year). One place is a little over 500 acres in total and has been under strict management by us for a few years, one is 510 acres of hardwoods where I have arrowed my buck each of the last 2 years, and the new place I am not sure how big it is, but it is a Christmas tree farm that is polluted with deer. :mischeif:

I don't post any buck photos publicly on here, but if any team mates want to see what I have my eyes on, I can provide a few via PM. :D

Whats up guys, the name is aaron. I work for the State as a Private Investigator and part time Police officer for Mechanicsburg OH. I hunt in Crawford (3 properties) and Huron ( 1 property "my grandpas") counties. Its been looking good for me so far this year a total of 3 bucks per woods that i hunt have been seen. Shot my first buck last year with a bow, and im hoping to carry it over for this year for the team. Remember anyone needs any help let each other know. I can see this should be a good team....LETS DO WORK

Hi, just found the thread listing the teams and you guy's were lucky/unlucky to get me as a team member. I live in Columbiana county (Salem) but hunt both Columbiana and Jefferson counties have a good number of farms to hunt. Not a lot of trophies so to speak but some nice bucks running around them. I look forward to the chance to compete with you all, and kickin a little butt of the so called pros and trash talkers. Actions always speak volumes over talk lol. Eveyone calls me "J" and I work at the Air Base in Vienna. I'll be able to hunt through the New Years timeframe then off to the desert I go (again) but if all goes as normal I'll be done way before that lol. Good luck to all and any help needed let me know. Thanks. "J"

I probably live real close to some of the public you are talking about.

As for the contest, I think all the negative mojo I had last year has been left there. I feel real good about this year!

Hey Cream, you ever hang out at Jackie' O? I always have some beers there when I drive down to Athens.

I have spent many wonderful times in most Athens establishments, but I can't say Jackie O's is one of them! I'm usually rotating between the CI, Cat's Eye, Courtside, and the Pigskin. :D

I have a good feeling about this team. I'm hoping to add at least 5 points on opening weekend. :mischeif: I need to...my freezer is about 2 packs of meat from being empty!!!!

Sorry guys.. I have been waterfowl mode.. Went out this morning, got three limits, plus a ten year old got one with a single shot 20 :D . Well lets see, I hunt two properties in washington county, one which produced my deer from last year that grossed 162 7/8 and netted 155 7/8. We always see a whopper there every year.. My cousin leases 665 acres in perry county. We are doing food plots and management on it.. We always see a couple big deer a year there, but is usually during gun season, which would not be good for this contest.. As for names, I am ok with most anything.. Backstrap brigade is fine, cuss I luvs me some tenderloin.. :bouncy:

Oh yeah, my name is Eric.. Also forgot that the farmer that we waterfowl hunt on, got some new fields, that used to be owned by a tree farm company, and he said it is crawling with deer. It is about a 15 minute drive from my house. I need to get out the map, but I think it is in the urban zone :bouncy: Cheap points... :D

I have to stop, breathe deeply for a few seconds, and relax somewhere between 12-15 times a day. My buddy and I have been shooting almost every night since June, we watch hunting shows and DVD's most nights, checking trail cams, glassing deer...it's just too much for me to take! :yikes:

im pumped for monday...im going to ask a guy to hunt a big 100 acre woods that my dad use to hunt. Dad use to hunt it when an other guy owned it and said he saw bucks all over in there. Since this new guy bought it no one has hunted in there for years. the guy made sure to tell me he likes perch and deer bologna lol. That will get me going because its gonna take me atleast a day to scout that woods. So come monday head over to his house and give him some perch and deer bologna and hopefully im game in that woods

GOT Permisson guys....YES!!!!!! me and my dad scouted the woods last night.....put my climber in a area where they cross the creek (HEAVILY) and dad said the spot is about 30 yards north of where he missed a big 8 point about 10 years ago. The reason im not is because dad said where they use to cross isnt there anymore and its now down where my stand is now.....so hopefully its looking good this year for our team. Have 2 woods that can produce nice bucks. Hey and i would like to nominate myself for the ohiosportsman vs. michigansportsman

TheCream
09-09-2008, 10:23 AM
Awesome news! I have no problem nominating you, so if the rest of the team is in agreement, I say that's good.

One word of caution, leaving a climber in the woods at the base of a tree is an invitation for a trespasser to score a free stand. Did you lock it up somehow? I hunt from a climber probably 90% of the time, and I almost always pack it out with me when I leave the woods. The only exception is if I plan to hunt the same spot the following morning. I'd hate for you to have your climber jacked right before season!

epe
09-10-2008, 10:43 AM
I agree with leaving tree stands in the woods. They will walk off with them quickly. We went dove hunting last night, and while waiting for another guy, my buddy and i drove to a spot to check out the soybean fields. Came around the corner and there was a 8pt, and what looked like a nice 10 pt standing in the beans at 6pm. Saw a doe also. Nice thing is, this is bonus spot for me, I usually do not even bother with it. :D

sportsman34
09-11-2008, 10:48 AM
it will be hard for them to find that stand, plus if anyone steals it it would be the nieghbor of the woods next to mine, but he hunts and wouldn't steal it. What is nice is its one big woods, and only 2 people own it and there has never been a trespasser. I mean i have a few treestands in a woods tha even get pushed during gun season i have never had a problem with treestands getting stolen. In this area everyone knows everyone so that makes it good to. Just a nice small farm community. Plus the guy that owns the woods said no one has bow hunted this woods in about 5-6 years. Plus this woods never gets gun hunted. I only have permission to bow hunt, but the nice thing is i never have to worry about it getting pushed. All the deer will run in this place and just hide. Then hopefully if i don't score before then, after gun season should be good for this woods.

09-15-2008, 12:10 PM

So I'll be gone for the opening day of deer season. Hopefully will be back by mid Oct. Good luck team!!! And save some for me. I'll try to check in while I'm gone to see what progress you've made. J,

Don't sweat it! Sometimes there are things that are more important than hunting. I know when they are put upon you, sometimes you think instantly how they will impact your tasks or hobbies that you value as important to you. Think in the greater scheme of things. You have the great ability to reduce the disease load on a huge population. Not too many americans can help other americans to that degree. The deer will be here. Good luck, stay safe, and thank you for giving a helping hand to those that need it!!!!!!!

Good luck down there. We lost power at my place sunday at 4, just got it back this afternoon. I have not had a chance to do much hunting stuff, but dad put up a couple of the treestands this week down in marietta. I will admit, I am not a early season deer hunter. I do not go out until after the
20th of october. After that I get out and pound the woods.

I haven't found a ton of them, but I haven't really been looking all that much, either. We save our best stands for the rut, and have done this the last couple of years and had it work out really well for us. We'll mostly hunt the plots and oak stands early on.

As for opening day, I'm not sure where I'll be now. One of my good hunting buddies I was supposed to hunt with can't go, so in the morning I may just go behind the house on Doe Patrol, in the afternoon I think I'll be filming for another buddy. :mischeif: The second day is when it looks like I'll have my best chance to do some damage.

this stand i put up to replace the 1 that got smashed.the strip of woods its in is only 30 yrds wide in between the 2 corn fields i can see into both fields if i had a camera i wouldve set it up.wuts great is the strip runs north&south and the wind basicly comes from the northwest-north.its easy to get into with all wind conditions.none of us has ever hunted this strip in 3 yrs since my buddy has lived there.so we will see theres some thick stuff in there for bedding and if they walk thru there going to the creek to drink gotta walk right by me:bouncy:

I took a new job 3 weeks ago and it is bogging me down quite a bit right now. Couple that with finishing up some honey dos. I had to paint almost the whole interior of the house and get the baby's room ready. Can't wait to get out this weekend and unwind.

i think tomorrow im gonna do alittle bit more scouting in the new honey hole i just don't feel comfortable yet with this place. I mean they have a nice path over the creek, and there is a new rub on the other side of the creek. I just feel a day to take another look wouldn't hurt cause i won't be able to hunt this again till the weekend. I just think it might help, and maybe find a spot with more rubs, i dunno what do you guys think.....I mean first day all i saw was one doe in this area

If you scout it, do it while slowly still hunting it. You kick a buck out by buzzing through there, he may stay out of there. And you would hate to be scouting it and see a monster with no bow.. :yikes:

I went out sat am and on my way in I bumped something. No snorts or anything, just some quick walking. Saw a good gobbler working the woods about 80 out.

Sat pm, headed out with my buddy. The minute we headed back here comes the idiot neighbor driving back on his tractor to run his chain saw and scare the deer off. I had one come in right around 5:30. It winded me scent smoker and all. After that saw nothing, but wasn't really surprised.

Sun pm, I was taping the trim in my dinning room when the bug hit me. I jumped in the shower around 5, jumped in my gear, then headed behind the house. I went in a little further than I orig wanted to, and paid the price. I bumped a deer very lightly, walked another 20 and setup. As I was getting ready 2 does slipped thru just out of bow range. About 6:45 I heard a noise and then had 35 (I counted) turkeys (moms and poults). I watched them roost right at legal sunset, waited til legal time and headed back.

Not a spectacular weekend. I split time with my buddy shooting/filming. I filmed him killing a doe on opening day in the afternoon at the edge of a big bean field. Got awesome footage! I was shooter Saturday morning and yesterday afternoon, and went 0/2 on squirrels. :D

well boys hate to break the news too ya but im done hunting till mid october........Corn fields are holding the deer not the woods. All 4 times i have been out this weekend. all the deer were either heading in before legal light in the morning or heading out after legal light in the afternoon. once that corn comes off i should be in business. Plus not seeing any buck sign (rubs) at all yet.....plus the heat. just not panning out well. I don't wanna burn myself out before the fun begins

I went out last evening. As I got in I saw a guy milling around right where I wanted to go. I made my way over to him and asked him if he was done or what. He pointed to an arrow 10 feet in a tree and said his arrow came off his rest as he was drawing on a nice 6pt. As I was talking to him, the doe that I was going after came out of her bed and busted us. I looked at him and said well that was the one I was after. By then it too late to climb a tree, so I just sat on the ground and waited til dark. Heading out tomorrow in some capacity.
Stay tuned!!

I missed my first deer in 13 years of bowhunting Friday night, I guess it was just a matter of time. It was one of the more frustrating nights of hunting just because there were so many deer in the plot inside 60 yards all night and I could never get a clean shot on a bigger doe. I could have tried some doe fawns inside 20, but I wanted a bigger doe. Also could have shot a few button bucks and had 2 small bucks in "chip shot" range, of course. I attempted a 35 yarder at last light on a big doe when I finally had a clear shot, and I either misjudged the distance slightly or she ducked me, either way, I shot a fraction high. I'll get us some points, we'll be on the board soon. I have confidence in us, fellas!

On the bright side, I squirrel-ka-bobbed an arrow on video last night. :mischeif:

i went out this morning and nothing......i think on my other 2 places im gonna do more scouting see if some new rubs and scrapes have shown up....People on the bowhunting forum are going crazy about scrapes....i just think its too damn early for scrapes to be popping up, or for them to be visiting them everyday. i give it a week or 2 yet before the bucks be sighted. Too much corn up yet for deer to be traveling looking for food

Well I left work a little early today. As I was driving home I was looking at the clock and thinking that Id have to hurry if I wanted to hit the shower and the woods. Then it hit me, just to like everyone else does and just smoke up. So I fired up the bee smoker with the fancy sticker on it and choked myself to death with smoke. Minutes before I smelled like fabric softener, soap and deodorant. When I hit the woods I smelled like smoke, perfect. Well I decided to put the it to the test so I started climbing right around 5:45. About 30 minutes later I noticed the wind had changed directions only when I heard snorts about 85 yards directly downwind of me. This happened periodically for about 20-25 minutes. Then with 5 minutes left of legal light I hear them. They came in and I drew on the lead doe. The angle was wrong the whole time, quartering to, then directly head on, to just about the perfect shot when she stopped, looked at my backpack on the ground, then took off when the other one spooked. If it was a little brighter, I could have seen her better in my peep, but there were too many variables that were adding up to a poor shot. I did learn a few things to make my hunts better.

It was a pretty slow weekend. Not sure if it was the weather or the full moon, but it was slow. Saturday morning (don't get mad at me) I let a decent young 11-pointer walk, I had him inside 10 yards. We have trail cam photos of him from a few weeks ago, he just wasn't quite what I was looking for. I am pretty confident I can get a shot at a better deer. That was the only deer I saw that morning, then in the afternoon I went to a different property and saw 8 (all antlerless). I want to kill a decent sized doe, and I could have shot a doe fawn but was holding out for mama, and never got a shot at a bigger one. Sunday I just hunted the afternoon and saw a lone spike, that was it.

My hunt was filmed, here are two slow-motion looks at my shot. Another steep angle, and I was really a tad lower than perfect, but the 1.5" cut on the Undertaker did the job.

good luck J

I washed some layers earlier this week, had them out on the line for a few days and lit a nice campfire next to them last nite. My buddy and I cut up his deer in my garage, so I went out and grabbed them off the line smelling like a smoky deer. I'm super busy at work this week, but plan on making the most of my weekend hunting wise. Kinda sucks cause my wife is really wanting to go out and spend weekends baby shopping and the like. I just want to pencil it in after work during the week. That hasn't gone over exactly as I would have liked, but it is what it is. It has been really cold at nite lately up here and I did see a doe being run by a buck 2 mornings ago. Didn't get a good look at the buck but he was running her. I drive thru a nice suburban area that has a lot of deer, and there is one place in particular that I use as a deer activity monitor. Today on my way home, both bucks and does were feeding together. So for now it seems like the does are a ways from popping. Pre rut should be revving up soon. I took a walk back on my place and there is a nice rub on a pine tree. The tree is about the diameter of my thigh so it is a decent rub. I think I'm gonna throw my cam near it and see if I get any pics.

The freezer is FAR from full!

Had a good morning. First time out after scouting a couple of times. Last time out scouting I cut a shooting lane in an area that had three trails coming into one good trail, I was set up 15 yards from the intersection. I set up against a small apple tree with high weeds around it. Got in and situated and then relaxed for a while it was 6:15 when I was all ready so plenty of time to let things calm down. At first light the squirrels started scampering around and then a rabbit came to within spitting distance. Watched them work their way around then the rabbit split and the squirrels went on their merry way and all got quite for a while. I'm hunting a property close to RR tracks and after the third or fourth train went by I heard some thing coming my way. It was getting close and I readied the bow and waited. To my right out comes a buck a young one but a buck none the less and with my schedule the way it is and is going to be I had already decided to take the first decent buck (By my standards anyway) that presented itself. Well it started walking toward me offering no shot well it's getting closer and closer and I'm thinking this thing is going to be up close and personal real quick. Well at 3-4 yards it finally turns quartering toward me and then it turned broadside I lined up behind the shoulder but didn't aim as low as I should have for as close as he was. I let it fly and hit both lungs, although a lot higher then I would of liked. I really didn't have a good feeling at first and decided to wait a while before I went into the thicket he crashed into. It was 7:55 so I went to the land owners house who I've known for 20 plus years and drank a couple of cups of coffee and we called a friend of ours to help with the track/drag. Well at 9:15 we went out and started looking and went to the spot I heard the crash and there he laid. 50 yards from where I sat. He's not very big but when I was looking at him from 10 feet away at eye level he looked a little bigger lol. I'm not very computer literate so can I email the pictures to someone and if they could post them I would appreciate it. Now I can relax and and drink another cup of coffee with my buddy. Nice first day out. And I just want to say that I smoked everything up last night and the deer had no idea I was there and getting that close to a deers nose and not getting busted says a lot about the smoker. He's a 7 point and probably 1.5 year old. he'll eat good though. Thanks for reading my long winded post. "J"

Well I was going to go back out Saturday morning but the house had a different idea, broken tub drain line above the living room, can you say water over everything. The kid was taking a bath and let the water out of the tub and whoosh. Well Saturday morning I was ripping and tearing plaster wood lath and drywall. Now I have a 6'X8' gaping hole in the ceiling :yikes: I'm going to let it dry out for about a week so no mold starts to grow before I re-dry wall it. But will be out next Friday very early and all day trying to fill another tag. Hope everyones having a better weekend then me lol. My Son's friends all heard about the close shot and now want to get the smoker, I told them to come over and I'd show them how to use it and if they buy the chips to replace what they use so be it. Interesting weekend, to say the least. I got home in time to hunt Friday and only saw deer on the way to the stand (4 does), and about dark I realized when I left in a rush to get out there I left with no headlamp or flashlight. Ever tried climbing down, taking down a stand and sticks, packing everything up and walking out with no light at night? I would not advise it! :irked: Then Saturday we hunted one of our favorite rut spots in the morning and saw a bunch of does and a small 7-pointer, so we left our set and hunted it again in the afternoon. Saw some more does, one that was being chased by an invisible buck (that's how she acted, really weird), no shooters. We had a small buck, judging by the sounds of his grunts, run by us in the dark at 20-25 yards while we were packing up that night. Then we hunted some plot area Sunday afternoon, saw 2 does and 2 dogs, and that was it.

I can't wait for it to cool down. :nono:

Saturday afternoon I only saw 2, a half-rack forkhorn and a doe. Sunday morning I think we saw 8, including a BIG shooter, but he was on the trail of some does and in the high wind I don't think he heard any call I made, and I threw the kitchen sink at him. Que pasa, amigos? I had all of last week off and hunted hard. I think I saw 4 different shooters last week and never could get a shot off. It was frustrating, but I had some great hunts. I had an incredible encounter from the ground blind with what I think was a good buck, he came right at dark and I couldn't see enough to take a shot. I saw glints off his wet antlers in the rain and he looked big. 18-20 yards out and I couldn't see well enough to let one fly. :nono:

I thought that was a really stupid rule this summer, said so, and was in the minority. I don't see why some folks, like you, should be penalized for killing a deer in gun season. Not all bowhunters are "archery only," so it makes no sense to me to have a rule like that. :irked:

As far as I know, the bucks I have been chasing have made it, too. We put very little pressure on our properties during gun season so late bow season is usually still very good action. I'm not going to lie, though...if I have the chance to put a .50 caliber sabot through a good buck this weekend, whether it counts in the contest or not, I'm going to do it. :D

Well fellas, I at least have another 5 points secured for us. I needed to fill that last $15 antlerless tag, and thought I was going to have to eat it. I had yesterday afternoon left, so I sat by a feeder (first time I have ever done that) and self-filmed a bowkill. I thought it was a small doe, turned out to be a button buck, but I'm not going to fret too much about it. The tag is filled and so is the small freezer. Anyways, I'm not going to enter this one right away, but in case I don't tag a buck, I at least have an additional 5 points for us. :D

And yes, the only reason I took the bow was for points sake. :mischeif:

Thanks Cream, that's as big as my Son got last Saturday (Twins) We could use the points. I'm going to try and get out this weekend to pop another doe for meat/points.

Thanks, fellas. The cold was not the worst thing about that hunt, it was actually the snow. The spot I hunted is about 60% of the way up an extremely steep hill, and I busted my butt twice going up the hill, twice on the way down! :irked:

I love bowhunting in the snow, but I do not like falling down hills! :D

Any new updates, fellers? It's starting to look like I may just have the two does to enter. I could only get out for about half the day Saturday for muzzleloader, couldn't hunt Sunday or these last two days. I have a friend in town through New Years that doesn't have a muzzleloader so I loaned him mine to use. I think I am going to get back in the woods with the bow on the 1st and over the weekend. I found a few spots in the extra weekend of gun season that have not been hunted and show a ton of sign, so I am going to hunt them late and see what happens. If nothing else, I want to stick at least 1 more doe, maybe 2.

If you're headed out late this season, best of luck!

sounds rough guys lol.....i got a trail cam for christmas, and i put corn out because my sister still has a tag, and i have about 10 pics of deer since the 26th when i put it up, but on the 30th i had pics of deer at 11:03 am and 3:50a.m. They just must have found the corn so hopefully tomorrow after work i check the camera and see new pics i can put her in the stand on sunday and get her a doe atleast for her first deer

Good luck with him, hopefully our team can get a late season push for a win or at least a top five win. As far as me I'm done. Getting ready to ship out so it is what it is for me this year so far. Good luck and have a happy new year. See you in the spring.

Wherever you are headed, be safe and get back home for next season! It was great to have you on our team! :D

I'll be out as much as possible this month, so hopefully I can stick a buck. If not, I have the extra 5 points from my second antlerless kill to add in. I'm just not adding it in yet in case I can upgrade with some more boney points. :mischeif:

Wow, the door slammed shut on the entry thread in a hurry! I was on here the day after season closed, Monday, ready to enter my other antlerless deer and couldn't do it. I guess it wouldn't have mattered, anyway, 5 more points wouldn't have made much difference.

It was a fun roll, fellas. We gave 'em hell! Best of luck to all of you in the future.

Oh well I guess we ended up 10th just like our number designation lol. Anyway how was the end of the season for you guy's? I left on the 9th and haven't been on the computer lately, I've been a little busy lol. Too bad I couldn't score another archery kill, but had a little a little deadline to make for over here lol. Well congrats to the winners and watch out for next year I have a good feeling I'll be back and ready for some backstraps lol. Later and good luck. "J"
