Alright OLDHAT, let's put a couple deer on the ground shall we.

You did a nice job last season. How are things looking in your area for this season?

OLDHAT
08-26-2008, 04:35 AM
Peppy,

Things are lookking pretty good as my game cams has 3 of the local bucks that hung around last year sporting pretty good racks. I guess all three of them will make P&Y min this year, so it will be pretty cool in already knowing how these 3 deer behave and in knowing the 3 of them will make book is all the better.

I've not got any game cam pics of any "thumpers" yet this year or a single deer to really set my efforts on, but the year is still early and hopefully one will show himself to my camera.

I'll probably take the standard 2 does this year and a buck, however I tend to take a good buck on "odd numbered" eyars, something about me and those even numbered years that is not as productive...heheh, but I do tend to have a gap, only been 1 time that I ever killed good bucks in back-back years, maybe this year will be another!

As you probably noticed from some of my threads/posts, I try to trophy hunt.....I consider that deer that will meet the P&Y min net score. I've got a pot load of those in that range and try to at least get one like that every year.

Last year it ook me until December 20th to go ahead and tag my buck, hopefully this year it all comes together a bit earlier.

And what about you?

Oldhat

Peppy

I've got a few really nice buck on trail camera this year. I will probably be much more descriminate this year then last. I've been scouting since February and know the land holds some nice P&Y bucks. I'd like to go 130" or better this year if all goes as planned. The twin 10's from last year are back and are now twin 12's!!

I'd like to take a doe opening weekend and then set my sights on a nice buck. however, one nice buck has been traveling my "doe trail" since late July, so it's not out of the question that I'll tag him opening weekend also.

I killed my buck on November 3rd last year.

I'll get this out in the open now, I do use the Scent Smoker.... I know you think they are a joke, so I hope you don't mind. http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/laughing021.gif

Four down two to go.

Anyone have any ideas for a team name?

OLDHAT
08-26-2008, 11:32 PM
Peppy,

Nah, I don't "hate" the scent smoker, I'm kind of the "to each his own" type of guy, I think most should become "hunters" first then adjust from there in what they need to do to get the job done...so scent smoker isn't the issue but it is claimes to killing a good buck solely due to any product that I don't care too much for....so if most would simply learn to hunt, I think they would realize that there is nothing "magical" that is gonna help them. I doi however have a pronblem with guys posting pics of them with a deer, the standard Bow laying over the carcus, then a scent smoker setting to the side in the pic...especially on a doe kill.....hell I don;t use anything and I coudl probably take a doe 80% of the time from a stand. But I wil admit that I am slow to change, hell I just switched over to a release about 4 years ago after shooting a finger tab for 20 years so I'm pretty slow to change.

Caribou Dreamer2:

Are you the same person as the original Caribou Dreamer...if so, tell Rjolenic (Ray) to kiss my ass and that he has never invited me back up to kick his ass again in golf....I think you actually called that day he and I played.

Team is shaping up. Good to see you on board Francis, I know you are new to this bowhunting thing and if you get frustrated give me a buzz as I know several areas on public land that I can get you on some deer with me one day...might even get you 2-3 kills, I can get you on the deer, you have to perform from there!

I just got home from the country club. Me and one of the members here on this site met up for the 1st time and played a round of golf...of course that was at 1:00, then I drank 20 beers and played with the scratch group for another 18 holes once Jeff left....so I'm feelin' pretty good right now.

Glad to have you Buckeyebuckhntr. I thought something might have happenned, we didn't hear form you much later on last season.

Buckeyebuckhntr and I were on the same team last year, came in second place by a couple of points. The only team to score on three bucks I might add.

I guess we need to come up with a name soon. Only one has been mentioned and that was Booner Busters.

Any other ideas or should we go with that?

Hey Buckmaster, You owe me....my team kicked your teams ass last year!

Heading to camp tomorrow to put in a good day of moving 2 stands, checking the cameras, etc...is pos'd to be nearly 90 degrees, maybe I'll just drink a cold one (or two) and fart around at the camper instead. Will be the last venture to the camper before seasson, so it's time to wrap everything up so I ain't doing nothing but hunting come season.

I had a white one like that (2000 model tacoma), Now I have a White 4runner and a 2007 Sequioa Limited (black)...the 4 runner is my hunting vehicle, hated to give up the Tacoma but the 4 runner was much nicer in storing my gear for hunting.

Who is our Ohio vrs Michigan team member........I vote ME:biggrin:

I think Myself, Medic, Peppy, and Buckhntr are all "trophy" hunters. I know that I won't shoot something unless it's 125" and at any given time if we are all trophy hunters, then we may "eat tag soup". So what about Caribou or Francis as we may be the least likely on the team to fill our tags!

I think we must nominate the one with the best chances of at least killing a buck. I pass up around 20-25 bucks/year and will more than likely do the same this year..that is unless one of them is 125" or better.

You guys call it.

I know one thing if the 4 of us that are "trophy" hunters do happen to fill our buck tags, it will be a winner on our team side of things, because I know at a min it will be at least four 8pt's or better that will go on our score!

Oldhat

Francis
09-02-2008, 06:05 PM
Well I don't know. I know it is looking good this year been doing alot of work and should get some does and not sure on how big of a buck...not going to be real picky but not shooting anything small...scouting acouple farms to hunt but am saving my tag till atleast my athens bow trip.

medicsnoke
09-02-2008, 07:44 PM
I will kill a 140 or better, thats a guarantee!

Peppy
09-02-2008, 08:42 PM
I certainly can't guarantee anything but I'm feeling pretty good about my chances this year. But Medic seems pretty sure of himself, so if he'd like to represent Timber Pigs and Ohiosportsman.com, then he's got my vote.

Of course, we still should hear something from the rest of the team.

Caribou Dreamer2
09-02-2008, 10:16 PM

Well for the record i shoot no bucks under 8 points or smaller than 120 so i guess i'm a trophy hunter, but on the other hand i will stick every doe i can,No babies or 4 point buck here, unlike a few others i know (buckmaster):shhh:

OLDHAT

Well, Francis you might as well go ahead and call yourself a "trophy" hunter beucase brother you are in good company here since Caribou stepped up and said he was also.....no need for you to be left out Francis, so hold out for a 120+ incher with the rest.

Medicsnoke 2 things:

I've been at it for 25 years and have ate tag soup while trophy hunting on around 15 of those years...I can't even get a trophy 50% of the time, so if you are that confident man, then you've got my vote! As I'm a pretty confident hunter and could guarantee a 120"+ every year but can't bid as high as you! I'd say that right now if I has to bet, I'd bet 40% on me killing a book buck this year and 60% that I don't fill my buck tag! So, I'll yeild!

Can we go ahead and post your score in the team thread...I mean is that thing eating out of your hand?.....I know you are on my team, so you better not blank as there will be some smack talkin about you next year when you are on a different team.

Oh Medic: Regarding your ealrier pm to me.....I sent you back a pm but your box is full...empty some of your messages!

Come on Peppy, get me fired up on that scent smoker or something man, well on second thought let's not get me fired up on it! I'm going over and picking on Pike and Yeley!

I have not been getting to many good bucks on cam lately, mostly a lot of 2.5's and yearling bucks. I pulled my cams off the bean fields since most of the deer activity has switched from the beans to the corn.

Our acorns here are still green and not dropping. The corn is where they are in my area.

Here are some of my trail cam photos if you would like to view them.

I seen 3 deer in those photos I'd shoot, 3 of them are pretty good with that double main beam 8pt being and odd looking creature!

Medic:

I gave up on Ky several years back (about 10 years ago). I've got family that owns 3 different farms in different areas for a total of around 700 acres and I just have not been back. Is always my back-up plan though if I happen to take a good buck "early" (Pre-Nov), then to Kentucky I'll go!

Ite, here we go
KY opening week-end, we hunt near the BIG Bone Lick State Park in Boone County KY. My good buddy Ken has 120 acres there and a furnished pole barn with utilities that we stay in.

The first night and morning I sat just off a salt lick in this stand

I've got 3 bucks that will go around 130" on the cam, I've got no big ones yet so if one of them show themselves "early" in the season I'm putting a tag on it.

All three of these deer are coming in daily and sometimes coming in together.

I feel we (us on the team) 10 days to take these "camera" bucks before they dispurse from there bachelor groups, so all should consider this and sell-out to this summer pattern for at least the 1st week of season....I know I am.

Francis,

That buck of yours should make the book. You get started now on "book" deer and by the time you are my age (38) you should have a pot-load. Good job man, I read thru' your story and you made a great decision to let that deer go for awhile before tracking.....turned a potentially bad experience into a fantastic outcome! Am I correct in thinking that this is your 1st bow kill?

Well team, I had a good morning on the opener, had several does within 5 yards and a 90" 8pt within 15 yards for about an hour. Of course you guys seen my hunting buddy Tip took a good 9 pt...he came and got me off my stand (I was about 300-500 yards from him) on Saturday evening.

I'll take a doe once the weather cools down a bit, and as you guys know, I try to hold out for a 125"+ deer each year and slightly lowermy standards come the winter season in late December-Feb.

Had a pretty good time at the cmaper this weekend, weather was a bit warm, but man was it good to be back out there hunting and camping.

thanks! any idea on the score? It will def help pass up smaller bucks. I'm so pumped in my book hes an awesome deer. I was worried I might let you guys down. ;). I will be doing a little less hunting for a week or so. I am working this week and paying for the mount. I am re sighting my bow in for 20,25,30. I will have my bow with my next weekend but I will be video recording my buddy. He is holding out for a buck and has a couple good bucks hes after so he said to bring my bow. I am going to shoot the first doe I get a good shot at unless its a yearling then just sit and watch some deer and try to hold for a big doe.

OLDHAT

I think your deer will be right around 130-134" on the net. It will gross a bit more, maybe 134-136. Of course it takes a net score of 125" to get into the book, the only thing I am not sure of is the mass measurements. As mentioned it should make the "book" on the net score.

The measurements I used to get the "net" number is:

G1's (Brow tines)- 4" each (total of 8")
G2's - 9.5" each (total of 18")
G3's - 8" each (total of 16")
HI - 4.5" each (total of 9")
H2 - 3.5" each (total of 7")
H3 - 3" each (total of 6")
H4 - 2.5" each (total of 5")
Inside Spread - 21"
Main Beams - 22" each (total of 44")

Add them all up and you have a net score of 134".

The gross will be the other little "sticker" lengths and adding in the "difference" from tine to tine/mainbeam compared to the other that is longer than it's opposite., this tine length (if one is say 10" and the other on the matching opposite side that matched is only 9", then you only get credit on the net score of 9" on each side (18" total)/stickers basically if there are none to match, then they get get deducted back out of the score (so if you don't add them in to start with, then it really doesn't matter...I didn't add them in above in my scoring.

For all practically purposes your deer is what is referred to as a "Basic 8 pt"....or a "mainframe 8pt"...or simply just as "An 8pt".......I like your name "Stickers" a lot more! You'll go through life remembering that name. The treestand from where you took him will turn into "Stickers Stand" when talking to hunting buddies when identifying what stand you were on when they ask...even if it's 20 years later...pretty cool that that will stick with you for a long time.

A lot of guys will go there entire life without taking a P&Y deer, you've started early!

I have not really gotten a good look at the deer. Although, i really think it is gonig to gross in the 140s. THe only thing it has gongi against it is beam length and its not real heavy. But the deer is awesome, id have shot it in a heartbeat

Yes, that for sure will net out P&Y...

You have to wait 90 days to have it officially scored.... I have used Roger Davis in Burton a couple times to measure mine. He isn't all that far from you. The earlier you get a hold of him the sooner you will be able to have yours scored once the drying time is up.

So I'm puilling back into the woods to my camper on one of the farms I hunt. I notice on the way in that the farmer had moved his chevy truck that he doesn't use to often back in the woods about half-way to my camper (maybe 60 yards from my camper. Well, as I get close to it something comes running out from underneath it...at 1st I thought it was a dog.....well it was a yearling.....the 1st time I ever seen a deer bed under a truck!

So I tell the farmer about it and he said that a big mommy doe got hit on the road a week ro so back....we then just made the assumption that this deer must have been it's fawn.

So the farmer said "guess what happened to me in my "quanza" (spelling)hut? (it's an arched building)....well he said that he walked past the 1st hut, then headed to the next, remembered what he wanted and that it was in the first hut, he turned around to walk back to the hut and out comes a 6 pt out of the quanza hut...there is nothing in there besides "junk"...no food, no nothing...damn deer just made himself at home.

Just passing along some odd happenings.

Never heard that before Oldhat, very interesting. I guess from now on before I hit the woods I'll check under my truck for mister big horn. :D

While scouting earlier this year in July, my friend unknowingly pushed a fawn directly into me and another guy while we were hanging a stand. This fawn just about ran right into us, then stood there for a couple seconds just feet away until it decided to bolt. Pretty neat experience being that close.

I was digging ginseng several years back and came upon a fawn that had just been born...it startled me when I seen it....well it still had the umbilical chord hanging off of it...it got up from bedding and came right to me as soon as it seen me. Well, I thought it pretty cool and the thing wanted to nurse so I stuck out my finger and the fawn started sucking on it...was pretty interesting. The bad thing about the entire thing was that it thought I was it's mother and I couldn't get away from it.....well, I had to take off running through the woods as fast as I could to get rid of it....guess I ran as hard as I could for 300 yards or so before Ifinally got away from it.
I guess that fawn was not more than an hour or so old.

I had a horrible couple days of hunting when it comes to seeing deer. I only seen a single deer from the stand in 2 morning hunts and 3 evening hunts.....I did see a cat on one morning hunt and a deer chasing dog on an evening hunt.

I typically only absolutely "blank" from about 60 hunts (counting hunts as 1 for evening and one for morning) about 4-5 times per year....this weekend is gonna screw up my yearly average.

Did get a new bow on Saturday.

I've got to take 2 weeks off from hunting, have a golf tourny and an anniversary so I won't be back out at it hard until late-October. I may hunt a few properties around my house if I get a chance, but the next time I go to camp will be for 1-20 days come October 24th or 25th. I typically paln on at least being there 2 weeks in a row. May take a break and comoe home from time to timeto visit the wife and kids, but come October 25th I'm "open" for even 3 weeks straight if need be.

Saw some pretty decent bucks this weekend.

I watched a buck put down about 5 scrapes in about 10 minutes or so Saturday evening. During which time a doe came close by, they couldn't see each other at first, but I could see both of them. Then the buck either heard the doe or spotted her and he immediately went over to check her out. a little game of cat and mouse ensued. Not chasing hard core, but he was hounding her some. Always fun to watch that stuff unfold. He was about 125" or so.

Found some real nice rubs also, real close to where I seen a huge buck.

Things will continue to get more and more interesting as we go from here on out.

What are you guys seeing out there as far as buck activity and sign?

managed to get a few days in thsi past week, was out of town for a funeral (had to cancel my being in the golf tourny). But anyway team I am not seeing squat. I mean it's tuff' out there. Seeing the does just like clock-work. Did see a mommy doe by herself the other morning, bedded down within 20 yards of me, no young in sight....it's getting close. We all know that when we start seeing those does alone that it's getting time.

Will be heading to camp later this week or this weekend for 2-3 weeks. Got a lot of work at the business to try and keep up with (is a political season...lots of direct mail, been working (when I actually work ) until 1:00-2:00 in the morning trying to keep up with it, so once it's over later this week then I am heading to camp, will come home to take the kids trick-or-treating and maybe a break here and there, outside of that I'll be hunting day in and day out for the next 2-3 weeks. I will at least put a doe on the board next week, I got permission to hunt 200 acres "down the road" from the 600 I hunt now, so I really have no plan on buck hunting it this year, but will go over there and whack a doe (maybe 2 or 3) one day if it gets slow on the property I typically hunt.

Good luck boys.

Was at camp for the last few days, decided to head home and just rolled in a few minutes ago, time for a shower and a cozy bed for a change, gotta let this weather pattern blow over (god is it blowing out there). Looks like the forecast is good starting Friday, will be a much needed break from the norm...felt I might need some motion sickness pills if I decided to continue to hunt this windy crap.....gets a bit harry in your climber in a "smaller" tree up at 30 ft...I guess afew times I swung 3 ft or so back and forth, think goodness I only weigh around 170 or I might have snapped the tree.

Action just isn't there right now, put a camera on a "3 day old scrape" next to the farmers house, had 3 different bucks hit the scrape in 2 nights. I feel the wind has them holding to cover and only exiting at night for the most part, the wooods should cut loose starting Friday after this hole-up, so I'll be back at camp starting to hunt again and continue for a week or so.

Seeing a lot of single yearlings "here and there"....is a good sign, but not much action. It is exactly 87 miles to my camper in the Waverly area from Dayton.....I did not see a single dead deer rolling down rt 35 out of Xenia to Chillicothe nor any dead deer down 23 for the 10 miles or so that I travel it....dead deer says it all, I expect I'll see 10-15 on the the same trip when I head down on Friday.

Well team taking a day off from hunting tomorrow and maybe on Wednesday then I'll be back at it.

Was about my toughest year ever in seeing deer but that has changed over the last few days. This morning I had a "shooter" 10 pt on a doe but th doe decided to go over the hill verses continue coming in towards me (she was getting pushed pretty hard by the 10pt). I seen chasing this morning and this evening, this evening 3 does got chased right to the base of my tree (maybe 4 ft away) and then in comes this scrub 5 pt...heheh, had my heart pounding for nothing. Been seeing a lot of deer, seen 11 total this morning and 5 this evening.

I am still seeing a lot of Mommy does with their young.....they should shed them within the next 3-5 days.

These temps are tough, seeing most of my action in the 1st hour or so during the mornings and the last hour before dark. Looks like these temps will break on Friday so all will be good.

I was going to take a doe this past week, but with these warm temps I really didn't want to worry about taking care off it verses being able to let it hang at camp for a couple of days. When I return to camp I'll tag a doe since we will be having cooler temps.

How is everyone else doing?

Been out since saturday evening morning and night ,Not seeing alot of deer during the day time hours mainly right at first light and evening hunts are producing action starting around 5:30pm.No real big bucks yet, seen alot of small 8 pointers and 4 pointers but nothing in the 120 or bigger yet.
Been seeing the same 2 mature doe with her there twins every night.
last night moved in on the one doe and got busted at 5 yards she was walking right under me with little one in tow then all sudden she look straight up and blew and off they went(not sure what happened here).I was hoping a buck would be following buck no luck.
Have tried several location and different tactics from rattling to grunt tube to estrous scent bombs.also tried this stuff call blue moon (smells good),but still no luck.
Will be moving in tonight and tomorrow morning onto the feeder and see whats stirring if anything, also had something knock down the tree my dripper bag was hanging in made a mock scrape a week ago checked it yesterday morning and it was on the ground ,hung it back up and added some more active scrape to the ground.
Been real slow the last weekend hopefully by this weekend thing will pick back up again.Have not seen the first buck chasing anything yet around my area.
Good team !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Although I managed to see what I consider 3 shooters while on the stand so far this year, I'm over-all a bit disappointed so far. I'm home for a day then I'll go back out to camp, had to get out of the camper and back home for a warm comfy bed for a day....there is only so much you can stand before hunting gets a bit tiresome. Well, it took awhile, but Friday evening @ 4:45pm I put this young buck down.

At about 4:30 down below me on one of the well worn trails in the area, I see movement. It looks to be a buck and something just doesn't seem right as he lays down right on the trail. I watched him through the bino's for a few minutes and then decide to hit the "can". He perks up quickly and throws his attention my way, but he still doesn't get up. So I hit the grunt tube and that gets him to his feet. He looks around up the hill towards me and starts to come up the hill.

That's when I realize something is wrong with this buck. He has an obvious limp as he slowly makes his way up the hill. Just like a true warrior even in his obvious pain he still wants to see the buck or the doe that made that noise. It took him about 10 minutes till he stood broadside at 20 yards and I was faced with a tough decision. Not knowing the seriousness of his injury or to what degree that situaton might be as far as whether or not it was life threatening or not, I decide even though this is not the buck I'm after, my conscience tells me to take the shot. So I do.

He didn't go far, but with the blood trail and lost light, I decided to back out and hit the trail in the AM. I found him after about 10 minutes of searching Saturday morning.

I did find a pretty large "knot" in his lower leg. Not sure if this was the reason for his limp, but I suspect it was. I didn't even notice it till later on Saturday night when I checked him out more closely. Originaly we didn't see anything.

He's a 9 point and my first kill with my new Ross bow bought during the off season.

Here's some pics!!

Good job Peppy!

Fellas I seen something this week that was pretty cool:

I turned on my cell phone to see what time it was...cell phone said 9:03...well here comes a deer outta the thick stuff below me...oh crap cell phone in hand, deer at 20 yards.....well it's a 3 pt. Close up the cell phone and get my bow..maybe a bigger one behind him...in 10 seconds here he comes, 160" 11 pt....comes to 30 yards right where the 3 pt came from, just new my season was over.....deer turns and goes back into the thick stuff...I watch him work through it, start bitchun and moaning that I might have spooked him with my movement with the cell (I never fart around with my cell on the stand...a no-no in my book) well about 15 minutes pass, look down over the hill and here comes 2 bucks sporting racks (2 90" 8pts)...get to within 10 yards and I look through the thick stuff and guess what is coming?....the 11 pt. Well my heart starts racing thinking he is coming back and to the 10 yards where these 2 bucks are.....gets to the same spot he was earlier, goes through a stare down match with the 2 8 pts, they move off away from him and he goes back into the thick stuff.....hehehe He's got a doe down there! Well, 5 minutes pass and snorting starts behind me.....turn around and here is a 7pt at 15 yards and has me dead to right......works around me at 20 yards and into the thicket he goes......guess what comes back out? the 7 pt with his tail between his leg and the 11 pt....back to 30 yards (but too thick to shoot) and then he turns around and goes back to the doe.

Well nearly 1.5 hours pass since I have last seen the 11 pt or any deer, thinking about setting it out all day and see if the doe comes out, but I gotta go to the bathroom badly....decide that I will sneak over to my other tree stand (maybe 80 yards away) and get on it and wait, maybe get rid of the stomach pains form having to use the bathroom, well, I am about half way there and guess what happens.....I hear grunting coming out of the thick stuff and out pops a doe running...she goes right by the stand I am trying to get to with the 11 pt in tow.....I slip over to it, get on it and think to myself that there may be more bucks in the area to give it an hour. I pull my bow up and look back at the thick stuff (big old 200 year whiteoak that had fallen in a briar patch several years back in the top of a drainage)..well I see 2 deer, out pops another doe.....then that 7 pt that busted me earlier takes off chasing her. It was not 10 minutes later and here comes a 120" 8pt...sniffing the trail of the 1st doe that went by my stand.....have him at 10 yards and decide to pass....head back to the truck on a run at 1:30 in order to get some toilet paper...end of story.

SO the moral of the story...nah it ain't to eat a bunch of peanut butter the day before you go hunting, it is that you never know what you are going to see at any time on the stand...I mean that buck did not fight any of the other bucks, but he put himself in a defendable position with that doe by getting into that fallen down whiteoak in the thick stuff.....I had never seen this while hunting, this type of protectionism.

Other news, as mentioned I got us 5 pts, with Peppy's 14 pts that makes a total of 19 more for the team....another buck kill and we will be back up at the top.

Me, I'm taking some time off from camp, I'll have to admit that I got my butt kicked during prime time this year. Sure I could have tagged out, but had no true shot opportunites at a 125"+ buck so far this year. I will however say that I have only killed one good buck in Nov, believe it or not most of my bucks have come from Decemeber or October, so there is still hope for me....Don't know what it is, but it seems me and the rut just doesn't get along...I can't pattern deer then and it actually sucks, after this peak time ends, I'll have a pattern to get back on and will be back out there at it.

They came out into a winter wheat field at 3:00, I guess they were around 130 yards away, then had 5 of them come in and bed down on me at 4:00, furthest onebedded from me was maybe 25 yards and one at maybe 7 yards, they got back up around 5:00 and headed back to the field..had a 6pt and a 100" 9 pt come in at 10 yards then out into the field they wwent and the chasing started.....had a good one (shooter) get come out and get in on the chasing, I guess I watched chasing for about 1/2 hour before it go too dark to see.

Will be hitting this spot hard over the next 3 days...one of the does was the object of the 3 bucks affection so I'll be in the same tree for the next few days to see what goes down.

Stay at it Medic, a few of my bucks have came from December.

I'm heading to the "Go to" spot this week (if I get over this sickness). Is 230 acres that I hunt that is absolutely no gun hunting. I typically switch the majority of my hunting over to this place once gun season roles in. I've only hunted it 3 times this year and seen some pretty good deer on it....so it's time to get serious about it again.

As mentioned the peak of the rut typically kicks my butt when it comes to seeing mature bucks...the peak has been over for a week or more and I seen 8 bucks in an evening hunt and one morning hunt, so it's time for me to get back on a pattern and tag a buck.

Peppy,

I stuck an arrow in a nice one several years back in this spot during muzzle loader season....he was chasing a yearling.....last year I arrowed my buck on Dec 20th..he was chasing a yearling. 10 years or so ago I arrowed another nice buck the day after gun season....he was chasing a yearling. During gun season I bow hunted on some "no gun hunting" property, arrowed a nice one...he was with some does......so I like that "spotty" here and there hunting where you have a late doe coming into heat so I know what you are saying.

Tactic I use on this property that is no gun hunting....I put out 2 big ol piles of corn (should be doing it today) that will last 5-7 days so that the neighboring deer that get pushed here during gun season realizes that there is some food here. This keeps the deer in here during gun season and they have no reason to stray away for food nor security. I then do not go into this area during gun season (in fear of spooking out the deer) then I resume hunting as normal in 8-10 days and do not freshen up the corn piles....don't know if the corn pile theory during gun season that I use on this sanctuary actually helps, but it seems to possibly work and I'm not changing a thing as if this was the reason I have had success in the past on this property then it's not worth risking not doing it....so I'm sticking with the normal plan.

I actually have no problem in hunting during and actually enjoy hunting the late season. I think that the deer become so much more predictable....kinda like the 1st week or so of bow season. Only issue I've ever had is that the deer bed and feed in the same damn spot...well after many years of trial and error I've think I've finally found a few spots nad use some tactics that seem to work that does not get me busted trying to get into the deer...so I'm actually pretty excited about the next 30 days or so of hunting. I think I like it better than the 1st 30 days of season.

My idea has always been that that 150" buck you will be hunting next year is out there right now and if not a 150" deer then he is a 140" deer...he's still there and most typical hunters "give up" after gun season...all of the deer you see next year (outside of next years yearlings) are still out there and Oldhat will be on them.

Look at thsoe sheds that Pike's buddy found last year....those dudes were more than likely on that bucks head until February....when you hunt for a single deer like that your entire season and he doesn't get knocked off during gun season then I see no reason to not be out there!

All you guys still alive?

I'm heading to camp tomorrow for a 3 day hunt, maybe 4 days. Is nice this time of year out there, most guys forget abou hunting, deer are starting to settle down/shifting over to a winter pattern and nice cold temps.....took the last 2 weeks off to revive myself a bit...is now time to get serious....the deer are still there!

If I seen that deer coming in I'd be hard pressed to stick an arrow in him with a known broken tine.....of course it is December though!

Maybe 130"......would be debatable whether to stick an arrow in him or not...I htink if he passed by my stnad quickly then I could let him walk, but if he came in and hung around for more than say 3-5 minutes then I'd have time to think about it and probably stick an arrow in him.

Seen a few deer the other day, didn't hunt much but instead helped one of the farmers cut fire wood and such for a day or so, will still be out there.

Im sitting in the tree behind this camera while this pic was being taken, I could see him coming across the field so after legal shooting light ended, I stayed in till i got a few pics of him. I know what woodlot he came out of and im sure if i move closer to this area he would get to me before legal shooting light ended. But he's not a shooter yet

yeah, I was starting think how I wanted my crow cooked, prob still should, cause he wont make 140.
But i definitely learned a lesson in hunting whitetails this year. Its all a mind game and if you dont have the confidence in a spot, you cant stay on stand. I dont think I stayed on stand past 9 am more than a couple times this year. Ide start thinking about how the spot i was in wasnt the BEST place I could be, and how the weather was wrong, Ide convince myself that the spot wasnt any good, and ide be out there. Then came the spot were I killed this buck, I knew if I hunted this spot long enough, ide kill a deer, thats how i was able to sit on stand for 3-4 hour sits in those single digits days we had............and my new smart wool socks helped

Dont sweat it man we have all done that, and our expectations go down a bit at this time of year, that is still a nice buck one anyone would be proud of! I'm gonna have a heater body suite next year.

I dont think my expectations go down, I honestly would have passed that deer, if I had known he was a young deer and as "small" as he is. I also will have a HBS next year. I seen a guy was selling them on here for like 300 bucks.

Good job Medic!

I guess I've been absent for a month or so, have not done "squat" in hunting over the last few weeks nor visited the site....In late Mid-Dec a company contacted me in regards to "partnering" with them, we've been working on some ideas/got a lot of new work and we are in talks of either a merger now or possibly just a buyout (a "buyout" means Oldhat retires on a farm at age 39and hunts and golfs the rest of my life..a merger means that I will still work....let's hope for terms on a buyout!).....so I have been consumed with that!

I talked to "Tip" for the 1st time in a month or so yesterday and he said that Medic and Rex's boy had killed good bucks so I had a minute today to come take a peek at them.

Yeah, I had a pic to post that would have gotten our team 5 more points, but it looks I am too late and it looks like it wouldn't have helped any.

Oh Medic, I'm gonna give you a pass on your earlier statments about you and that "140" one you guaranteed...that is a good deer...135 or so is plenty good enough!..Way to get it done.

I would have liked to have spent some time in the woods, but business called and I decided to work a lot....maybe I'll be like "gunners" from here, he "sold" a month or so back, I had him over at the country club for a round of golf in the fall so maybe with all that "jack" he made out with he will treat me or buy about 5000 acres around our area and let me hunt it!

I'll stay in touch

Nice to hear from you again Oldhat.

And to the rest of the team.... I had a great time and enjoyed myself once again. We came out of the gate in a big way with Francis putting a real nice deer on the ground... Way to go my friend. Medic, although you didn't get the deer you were after, that deer is certainly one to be proud of... Nice going.

And to those others who were on the Timber Pigs and weren't able to score, it was a pleasure and better luck next year. Maybe you staked out a nice buck for next year as well during this years hunts.

We'll see you all throughout the year, I had a great time once again, and maybe we'll cross paths down the road on the same team again next year or something.

Take Care,
Peppy

We'll probably see each other next year.

My biggest problem this year is that I lost the spot that I had sold out to in years past. Is a family fight over a farm and I've got 4 treestands in a 500 yard area that are my "go to spots"...we'll they were a "no go" this past season...so I lost out on a dman good spot and where I typically hunt at most of the time. I think all in all I seen 3 shooters from the stand this year, that's down a bit for me. My over-all numbers on buck sightings were way down, the only hting that got my average back up to normal this year was that I seen 11 different bucks in a 2 hour period from the stand, that got my average up a lot.

I guess I "blanked" in at least 6-8 hunts this year of even seeing a deer, as many years as I have been hunting all my notes tell me that I would typically only "blank" from seeing a deer per season on 2-3 hunts....I got my ass kicked this year hunting, I did put in more time this year from October 26th-Nov 25th more so than any other year I have ever hunted in my career.

IN closing I would say this was one of the worse years I have ever seen in 10-15 years on mature bucks sightings. I am typically suceesful a lot in the late season, but once the clock struck 2009 I bet I didn't put in 8 hours from there until the end of season...too much business issues to deal with.
